Just watched this again, and really enjoyed it. Has a real fag end of the early Thatcher era about it, everybody is on their uppers, even Arthur is scratting around for ready cash. Obviously it's not as bleak as Boys From the Blackstuff, or even Auf Wiedersehn Pet, but there is a real downbeat feel a lot of the time - the grey wintry exteriors only add to the bleak atmosphere. Terry's Confessions of a Carpet Cleaner style adventures help lift the mood though: Sally Faulkner's pub landlady would certainly be worth a return visit!

Below is an original Press Photograph (which I obtained on eBay). Written below, the words which can be found on the back of the above Press Photograph. Minder Wednesday 24 October 1984 9.00 - 10.00pm Hypnotising Rita Arthur (George Cole) has a cash flow problem, all our backs are having intimate relations with a wall, it's a sign of the times, government's lost it's way, it's a question of your money or your van, he informs Jimmy Elliot (Ray Burdis), in the penultimate programme in the present series of Minder. But then Arthur has an even better idea to recoup the money Jimmy owes him, he decides to take over Jimmy's steam cleaning business, so Daley help cleaning services, comes into existence for all steam cleaning requirements - commercial, industrial and residential, anyone whose got a carpet and we're in, Arthur enthuses to Terry (Dennis Waterman), and when Dr Sudbury (Donald Sumpter), the hypnotist on the floor below, tells Arthur that with hypnosis he could help him become businessman of the year, Arthur's enthusiasm knows no bounds. Pictured - Donald Sumpter as the hypnotist Dr Sudbury, and Nicola Cowper as his secretary Rita, in Thames Television's Minder, tonight.

Just watched this one again and actually enjoyed it although it is not a fantastic episode. As others have alluded,, George Cole does tend to rescue this one a lot and the ‘Rembrandt of a lardy’ comment is a classic. Some excellent acting by Dennis Waterman too showing Terry’s softer side. I think the episode missed a trick in not seeing Sudbury getting his comeuppance, which would have been good....

Arthur gushing over the tobacco store, admiring its products as delicacies, and smooth-talking the owner - a great scene from a different era.

Terry in the supermarket again - think it's the third episode to feature this sort of scene? Looks like a different one this time - Sainsbury's colours. Anyone got any idea where? Dave: "If it were any wetter you'd have to swim to the bar"

Watched this episode last night and was just okay not a classic but missed a lot of opportunity to be better.
One thing though the next episode should have Arthur still under the hypnosis but does not happen so continuity is a bit out of whack there.

One small insignificant part that I really like in this is when Terry is up in the tower block in the old lady's flat and the camera spans a view of London, it looks so bleak, I grew up in the countryside in West Wales so am used to having a view of fields, trees, hedges and cattle so I can't imagine having that view from my home. I do feel a bit sorry for the lady stuck in the high rise and lonely. She mentions she used to have a house also I think she says "George used to like them" when referring to making Terry a sandwich I guess that was her husband and she is now widowed perhaps hinting that the council moved her from her house to a tower block due to being on her own.
It's not an important part of the story but it adds some realism into the episode something that Minder frequently does (which adds to the quality) it also goes to show what a nice chap Terry really is.

I loved this one - always have. Good supporting cast and as with all episodes good locations. Good to see June Brown (I saw her in Coronation Street, a couple of days ago) in this too. I enjoyed it hugely...

Hello folks, just watching this. One of the better episodes with Arthur smoking rubber particularly good. Has anyone noticed the photos in the Winchester when Terry and Arthur fill the place up with steam ? The look very like the three "intro" photos with Terry as a boxer. I wonder they were part of a job lot taken for the intro at the start of season one and got hung on the wall...... Have a look 27 min 20 secs in after Tel has the cup of rosie lee with Dot Cotton.

A small typo in the episode guide - the writer is Alan Janes not James. Janes was also the creator and writer of 'Prospects'. At first broadcast in 1986 it was my favourite TV show - a great pity it wasn't continued beyond its 12 episodes
