Not a lover of golf, but remember him well when I did watch it a little back in the 80s.
RIP Peter

One of the great sport commentators of all time. Synonymous with their sport like Sid Waddell, Bill McLaren and Richie Benaud. At 89, I make that 17 over par. RIP Peter Alliss.

Cracking reminder of his wit on twitter today talking about Carol Vorderman whilst commentating on the golf.
"Hmmm, Carol Vorderman. I like her. I was watching her on Countdown the other day and got aroused.........(Comic pause to perfection). 7 letters. Not bad for a lad who left school at 15"
The pause is absolute perfection. Ken Brown (I think) in hysterics.

I'm a fan of golf rather than someone who goes out on the course (no talent for it whatsoever!) and as a fan I considered Peter to be a master of commentating on the sport, as well as being a very good golfer in his younger days. Peter called it the way it was rather than tiptoe around the truth and this caused inevitable ructions in the hypersensitive climate which has emerged in the past decade or two. However, any such controversy reflected more on those keen to take offence than it did on Peter's knowledge and common sense. Part of British golf died when Peter passed on.
