A very familiar name and face of many people's youth as the presenter of Grandstand, Nationwide, Breakfast Time and Holiday, to name but a few. Had been largely away from the public eye since the scandals that ruined his career - shows how times have changed that these days celebrities carry on after scandals, but in the 1980s it was career-ending.

Former Grandstand and BBC Breakfast TV presenter passes away aged 87.
A familiar face on TV for those of us of a certain vintage, until his downfall around 1987, when certain things come to light that saw him sacked from his role and didn't appear much on our screens afterwards.
He would have made a second career off the back of that scandal now, but such were the times.
RIP Frank

To be fair, up until the scandal he was a name and a face that could be trusted. I believe he came back afterwards but of course the glory days were over.
RIP Frank

Hadn't realised he lost his job with ITV 5 years after the BBC for the same thing.
Quite sad that despite a stellar broadcasting career he will mainly be remembered for his out if office activities.

When the first scandal broke, I found it improbable but it turned out there was at least some truth in it. Though I think the tabloids (or certainly the NOTW) added fuel to the fire by concocting further stories.
I had forgotten the second scandal that occurred four years later - I suppose that was the real finisher as prior to this he had gained new work on regional ITV and Sky.
However, what strikes me now is a sense of imbalance in his punishment - since then, we have had the Jimmy Savile revelations which pale anything Frank Bough did into insignificance.
I mean, AFAIK Frank Bough never harmed anyone over a long period as per JS. Frank probably only harmed his own reputation, and distressed his family; he was not an undetected criminal as such. And whilst Frank got a bit mischievous at parties but was found out and dismissed straight away, JS continued to be jollied along at the BBC with his TV series re-commissioned each year.
It was interesting to see the tributes to Frank from such as Gary Lineker, Piers Morgan, Nick Ross, Esther Rantzen and Jeff Stelling.
He was a top broadcaster, equal parts avuncular and suave. Overall, it was disappointing that he ran into personal problems and compromising situations.
R.I.P. Frank Bough.

RIP, Frank Bough.
He was present at a few 'fruity' gatherings but does that make him a bad man? I don't know the whole story and if he was some kind of predator then I hope justice was done but I feel there was far worse going on which we didn't hear about.

I think as long as the involves consenting adults his sexual preferences shouldn't be an issue, and it's a shame their exposure wrecked his career. For me the really distasteful part is the NOTW affecting to take the moral high ground given all the downright evil strokes they pulled over the years. As Portland Road says there were probably people who did a lot worse but with a blind eye turned so they could carry on their merry way.

Exactly, agree with both of you & my Dad said the same at the weekend. Hardly Jimmy Saville, who went unpunished until he was no longer with us...
