Watching this for the second time in several years....didn't really want to. I can't stand the Lionel Jefferies character - he is rude, obtuse, abrasive, and talks in a very annoying way! However, Keith Barron saves the episode by being a bit of a wide boy/hard man. I agree with the above posters....the Jock subplot lends itself to some hilarious humour. I think LJ's character Cecil, is there for a bit of comedy. An eccentric old duffer who's having his swan song. Barrons character strikes me as a bit of a slimy, lazy scrounger to be honest but that's not to say he isn't a very good part of the episode.

Just watched this one again this morning. Some general observations:
Great acting from George Cole.
Strong work from James Cosmo. Scots feature pretty heavily in Minder but Cosmo's very convincing in a hardman role, and his seedy drinking club is a real blast from the past in this episode.
Gillian Taylforth has always been an appealing woman. Sort of familiar yet slightly unobtainable, a bit like the best-looking girl at your school.

Watched this afternoon, brilliant. I love the old school acting by George Cole and Lionel Jefferies in it.
James Cosmo is always good value, although it would have been nice to see him in a bigger role.
The sofa Terry was laying on we used to have the same one. I have known one or two people who believe in not being good to leave sitting in the bottle once opened.

Cracking episode with some great lines and acting in it. Sadly many of those who star are now no longer with us, but their legacies live on.

Enjoyed watching this episode today and although at first I felt that Cecil's character was being overacted I quickly came round to the notion that it was Cecil's eccentricity, which formed the basis of his character, being well played by Lionel Jeffries. Loved the scene in and out of Jock's club, with Arthur falling over the overflowing bins and struggling to get into the Rolls before being overcome by a drunken sleep. Glad to see that he eventually regained his composure and constitution enough to sneak a crafty short behind the bar at the Winchester when Dave was hoovering. The river scenes (it's called the "Thames" ) were idyllic and helped by the good weather during filming. I thought there'd be a bit more interaction between Terry and Christine, but that was something that didn't develop. Cecil's plan to keep all his cash from his lazy family reminds me of my Mum often saying she was going on a ski trip, "ski" standing for "Spending the Kids' Inheritance". I noticed that despite Dave's observation about the whisk(e)y labels being the wrong way up for optics, all the optics behind the bar in the Winchester had the same upside down labels. In the Episode Guide on the minder.org website, the plot summary refers to Cecil's PA as being "Angela Richards", although this is the name of the actress, the character being called Sheila. (Pedant's note about the minder.org website: the disclaimer at the bottom uses the word "compliment" instead of the correct "complement" - although arguably "compliment" works as well, since there are so many nice comments about the series).

He looks like Virgil Caine and hits the nail on the head....
