I love this episode. Arthur's patter when they pick Ernie up from the Scrubs is classic, updating him on everything that's happened whilst he's been away: " Mohammad Ali, little Cliffy Richard's still a bachelor boy, they put a man on the moon, and there's something called VAT now - but don't worry too much about that". Brilliant stuff.

Started to watch this episode on the Network DW Years DVD set and just after the intro credits the PQ went all grainy and just plain awful to look at and this went on for the majority of the episode, was this set supposed to be remastered or something? Good episode apart from the PQ.

Hahaha..as Arthur naturally wouldn't bother, with the VAT...that's great... I guess great but sort of subtle lines like that sometimes pass by me.

I checked them as well metro as well as trying different dvd players, just really bad quality which is odd as I have other network dvds of much older programs where the quality is as good as it should be.

They must have used the wrong master then as a lot of the other episodes are fine up to now. I wonder if the Blu ray of this ep is the same?

just really bad quality.. I wonder if the Blu ray of this ep is the same? Wait...Bluray.. + Minder... At first, that seemed a bit of a sad, contradiction in terms.. Then I thought...maybe I have actually missed something.. But then a quick search of the forums told me that apparently, it's still as I first thought..non existent, tragically (criminally, even). All one can do it seems, really, to get this, our most favourite series, and certainly one of my all time favourites, a pukka upgrade, is to petition Network.... support.networkonair.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

Regarding the scene in the bank where Arthur reads the leaflet ''we are open even when we are closed'', check out Deryck Guyler on YT and there's an ad featuring Eric Sykes trying to sell him an old Ford Popular and they go round to Barclaybank whose slogan is guess what; ''we are open even when we are closed''.

I'm assuming this is the advent of the 'hole in the wall' cash machine?

I'm assuming this is the advent of the 'hole in the wall' cash machine? Yes that's correct. In the ad, Eric is selling the old banger to Deryck who only has £100 in cash, so much to Eric's dismay they go to get another £50 out of the hole in the wall. Of course just as they get there the old banger gives up and Deryck tells Eric that it's a pity that he (Eric) hasn't got access to Barclaybank as he's going to have to pay someone to tow the car away.

Watched this again the other night, very enjoyable. Max Wall really good as the ex-con, still trying to keep up the hard man image but you can see there's a kind of sadness in him at the waste of it all. And that's before he finds out he's been done over by the bank manager. Always thought Rula Lenska was a decent actress, but never really warmed to her - she looks rather good here in her leather trousers though, and puts in a nicely hard boiled performance.
DVD picture quality not great, as others have mentioned.

Ive got the same set and quite a few episodes the picture quality is awful ITV4 quality is much better. I thought at first it was the connections at the back of the tv but it wasn't. Yeah the picture quality is terrible for ‘noise’ on the Waterman Years set. I don’t remember the Umbrella release being like this.
