Link to episode on minder.org: www.minder.org/episodeguide/S03E05_Dreamhouse.htm A rare dip in quality for series three I think here. The story really doesn't go anywhere and apart from Arthur and Beryl, the flying pigs rip off it's by far from being a great Minder story sadly. Great acting as always though!

jno, I cannot agree with you, I love this episode. It is not gritty and is borderline farcical at times, but it highlights how Minder differs from a lot of series in that it doesn't stick to the same kind of story lines.
An appearance by the great Richard Griffiths, Uncle Monty from Withnail and I, makes it a cracker IMO, and we see some good comedy moments in this episode, especially when Arthur is getting seduced by Beryl, for me nobody does this type of acting better than GC.
The flying pigs storyline I was sure was part of a different episode. I remember watching this episode as a kid, must have been on original transmission.

Caught some of this today on ITV4 and I always think this is a very good episode. There are some great performances - particularly Richard Griffiths - and although I would agree the flying pigs sub-plot doesn't quite go anywhere it still has some good moments.

I agree with all comments so far really...as jno says its a bit of a mish-mash episode...but has enjoyable moments....including a rare 'flashback' scene (Arthur remembering the flying pigs)...and Richard Griffiths is always enjoyable...not one of the best by any means perhaps, but enjoyable to watch on a Friday afternoon when you've knocked off early from work (has that kind of 'carefree' feel to me for some reason)

I like this one as it would be great to look after a big country house with a snooker table. It's a fun episode.
Also, is Arthur mad running away from Benedict Cucumber's lovely Mum?

Also, is Arthur mad running away from Benedict Cucumber's lovely Mum? In some episodes Arthur is a bit of a lad where ladies are concerned but in others he dismisses them as if they are nothing more than a pain in the backside. Maybe his attitude toward the fairer sex differed depending on the episodes writer?
As you say though, to turn down an offer from the lovely Miss Ventham in her prime would take some serious willpower!

Also this episode is a bit strange as I think Adrian Mills is playing one of Beryl's tough sons! I remember Arthur meeting the woman for lunch (and an affair?)- when he had his sports car stripped by children, which seemed out of character for Arthur.

Yes, I think Arthur was hoping for an afternoon 'lie down' in 'Broken Arrow' too. I wouldn't say it was totally out of character though. There are several instances of Arthur not being the doting husband.

I just finished watching this episode. I enjoyed it a great deal. Hardly a typical episode. I get the feeling that everyone working on Minder decided to just have fun and see what happens. I'm not knocking the episode. I think everyone took their jobs seriously but they were all determined to have a good time. That comes across onscreen. The flying pigs storyline would have probley worked better in another episode. Arthur is clearly blinded by greed this time. How could Arthur run away from Beryl?

Something that I've always wondered about this episode is what happened next regarding the flying pigs? Arthur seemed to know where to find Kenny so surely he would have sent Terry to get his money back.
Although I realise London is a big place , surely pulling a scam like this on people like Arthur was a risky business. Through the network of dodgy characters which Arthur was part of, Kenny would soon be tracked down and dealt with accordingly.

Kenny probably received a spanking from someone shortly after the events of this episode.

Watching this for the umpteenth time I was struck with one of those ridiculously picky thoughts: if the leccy was cut off they wouldn't have been able to get hot water for the bath. Even if it were gas heating the boiler would have needed leccy. There, said it now!

Is this episode cut on the UK DVD? Or does it have The Beatles playing in the background?

My 'Fremantle Clearvision' (is that the version you're talking about mias?) doesn't have the scene included at all, not even with a diferrent backing track to replace 'Nowhere Man'..
I had this episode recorded off one of the satelite channels in the 90s and I'm sure it was shown in that.

Where in the episode was The Beatles song used?

Where in the episode was The Beatles song used? Just after Terry meets the two women in the grounds that have come looking for Frankie Farrow, an electricity board van pulls up. Between this and Derek appearing at the patio door saying "Aye up lad! There's trouble t'at disco....etc.etc.", there's a scene of him sitting in a DJ's box swilling Brandy and playing 'Nowhere Man' when the electricity is cut off mid track.

I don't remember that being on my Region 1 DVD of the episode.

Mias seems to think there's an issue with the rights on the music being played in the scene which would have made it unsuitable to include i suppose.
The scene doesn't really add much to the storyline, it's just another funny moment really.
I remember it quite clearly from a previous recording I had of this episode.

I have no doubt MIAS is correct. The Beatles clip used in the Doctor Who story The Chase was removed when it was released on Region 1 DVD but it did appear in the VHS version.

So, is the Aussie Umbrella DVD the only legal way to get this episode complete?

So, is the Aussie Umbrella DVD the only legal way to get this episode complete? It may well be. If the inclusion of the track was given permission when the episode was made and first aired, why would there be a problem when it came to putting it out on dvd? Is somebody looking for a few quid?

When the rights were originally granted for the use in 'Dreamhouse' back some 35 years ago it would have been for a showing on ITV and probably 3 or 4 repeats. No one thought to negotiate for a home video/DVD release in the future. By the time it came to DVD I would imagine the cost of using The Beatles became too high and hence it got cut from the UK version.
It is why 'Shoestring' has been so hard to get out on DVD because of all the contemporary music that was used and rights had to be renegotiated. OFAH suffers as well.
If Network ever get that far with releasing 'Minder', it will be very interesting to see if the episode makes it uncut onto their sets.

Rights to music has been a major issue with several tv shows being released on DVD here in the US.It took years to sort out music rights issues for the sitcom WKRP In Cincinnati before it could be released on DVD. The show aired from 1978-82 and used a lot of Rock music from the era. It was only in the last couple of years things were worked out so the entire series could be released on DVD and even then there are a few.examples were editing had to be done because the rights to use music couldn't be obtained.
It's amazing the problems that can be caused by using a few seconds of song on a tv series.

I would imagine that, in Australia, there is a different copyright law and that is why their version is uncut. Or maybe Umbrella just thought sod it!

At the beginning the plot has great potential - Terry minding a large house owned by a former rock star - but it just gets too farcical as it progresses Usually in Minder we get some great menacing "heavies"& henchman but the two guys with the fake Yorkshire accents were too comical to be true - even making Hale & Paces Two Rons seem believable - We do get some amusement with Arthur rejecting Beryls advances & her two sons played by future Casualty star Clive Mantle & That's Life presenter Adrian Mills - Keep your eyes peeled for a gold Cortina estate that appears in the background in nearly every street scene - its in the pub car park twice ! - The guy playing Kenny always seemed to turn up in shows like The Bill , running a burger van or dodgy café

Doesn't work too well for me this one. Terry and Arthur spend too much of the episode apart. Lack of a storyline and great dialogue. My highlight is probably the always excellent Roger Sloman as Silver.

I think it's quite a good and plausible storyline but there maybe a few too many farcical moments as already mentioned by gra966.
Terry getting hired to watch a pop stars mansion whilst Arthur tries to get an investor for a potential money spinning venture with another dodgy dealer is all good stuff i reckon.
However, the coming together of all the interested parties in the final scenes is actually a step too far into comedy territory for Minder imo.
Although I would say, the look on Arthurs face as he turns to run away from the Police car in the very final scene is absolute genius on GC's part, classic Daley which makes me laugh out loud no matter how often i watch it.
