Good bit of info there jno but it leaves me a little confused as to why one of the main characters in the Sweeney episode 'Selected Target' was called Titus Oates as he wasn't at all like the description above.

Good bit of info there jno but it leaves me a little confused as to why one of the main characters in the Sweeney episode 'Selected Target' was called Titus Oates as he wasn't at all like the description above. I would assume (pure supposition though) that 'Titus' was simply attributed to 'Captain Oates' and Oates in 'The Sweeney' (played by Ronald Fraser) was meant to be the 'real' Titus Oates: www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_OatesFor the sake of completion - this might also be worth a read: www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colley_CibberIt seems the writers of Minder and The Sweeney clearly knew their history.

I remembered this being a strong episode but it was better than I remembered. Terry certainly has a rough time in this one but still makes a good show of himself when he takes on the two thugs with one good hand. I like the way Dave played along with Arthur's pretentions at the Winchester while zinging him at the same time. All around another top episode.

Minder scripts - pink pages indicate a script change. Fortunately I have a before and after for this episode - scene 100 on page 64, the very last scene at the cafe. Before:After:

Great stuff jno.
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this and I always thought that Vern says, "what's these black things on the Eggs? TROUBLES?"
Also, Terrys line, "Come on Vern - back of the net!" I'd always heard this as "Back of the neck!", as we hear Vern say earlier whilst preparing to down a Whisky in Matthews' office.

A very good episode, which I enjoyed watching yesterday, on ITV4, some good guest stars - Julian Holloway and Mike Reid.
The scenes featuring the Scaletrix track and Terry and Des playing Space Invaders, bought back childhood memories, I have found a Scaletrix game, which I sometimes play online.
I always laugh at the scene, at the end of the episode, where Arthur and Des (with the help of some diggers), sort out the criminals.
Lots of good London locations in this episode, and some Countryside locations, near the end of the episode.

Watched this again yesterday on ITV4. Got to be up there as one of the best episodes. The one liners in that from gc are superb. Also the end scene with Mike Reid, what's these black bits?...burnt fat..class comedy writing.

I can't see it mentioned on the thread, but a classic line is when Arthur offers Vern a drink in the Winchester an Vern says "as a matter of fact I've just had a cup of tea up west and it has given my palate a right portion of GBH".

Such an interesting episode, the ending was grand to watch, seeing how Terry and his own friend were casually driving those tractors.

I've watched this episode countless times but on watching it again today something occurred to me that I hadn't thought of before.
How did Terry, Des, Arthur and Vern get back to West London from Essex?
Certainly would have been a tight squeeze in the breakdown truck!

With Terry out of action, Arthur is looking for a new Minder, step forward Vernon, brilliantly played by Mike Reid. Vernon is a bit of a gourmet, I love the bit where he offers a place to eat lunch at £18 a throw, just love Arthur's boat in that scene. Arthur trying to impress Matthews at the Winchester is comedy gold as well, telling Dave to "Make it Mr Daley". Dave's line about forgiving him if he doesn't pull the forelock is brilliant. Great scrap for Terry as well, even with one working hand. Larger role for Des in this one and it's a brilliant conclusion with Terry and Des using the bulldozers to trap the villains. The final scene in the cafe, Vernon's face looking at the black bits on his eggs - wonderful stuff. 4.5 out of 5.

I watched this one appropriately enough over lunch today. A nice cheese & pickle roll with some posh crisps and a can of pop. Vernon would have been very impressed.
One of the best episodes of all in my view, the first 20 mins is non-stop comedy, I laughed out loud half a dozen times. I particularly liked:
Monty Bowman and his Scalextric, lovely job. Same actor played the theatrical agent in the Ray episode with Mystic Mickey, just a bit less hairy!
Mike Read as the food obsessed Vern is brilliant. "The hotel gets a mention in the Michelin Guide". Arthur's response "Oh yeah do a nifty tyre change do they?" Superb.
Vern tasting all the wine in the Winchester, bottles everywhere! Arthur's having none of it "put the corks back in that lot and bung him a warm lager!".
Arthur demeaning Des 'You can't trust his lot, they have to sign Jocks to score their goals for them' To which Des replies 'I don't even like football'. Which is odd because in an earlier episode under some duress Des says "I swear on Queens Park Rangers", possibly when denying he nicked Terry's wheels of the cab in T-64? It's not clear which team Arthur means by 'his lot' though, or which Jock! Any suggestions? A bit too early for Charlie Nicholas at Arsenal or Frank McAvennie at WHU. And Des is obviously northern anyway, Leeds/Bradford accent.
All in all one of the very best.

Good review bmw and some great observations.
I'm wondering when Alan Brazil signed for Spurs? '82-'83?

Thanks Barry, yes AB signed for Spurs early 80s so not him. I wonder if it was a reference to Leeds Utd they had a lot of Scots in their heyday and des is from up that way.

Bowman says he'll charge Arthur "a pony a day" for Verns services.
I reckon that would equate to roughly £120 - £140 per day in todays value which considering Vern had to be paid plus Bowmans cut, doesn't seem a lot?

"Looks like a place where minor criminals come to drink....", CLASSIC line! Really encapsulates The Winchester Club. The Winchester (and Dave) is one of the things I remember most about the series when I used to watch it in the 80s. Dave is a curious character...he knows all the faces....knows all the gossip....but generally stays legal. Does he realise how crooked a lot of his clients are? I reckon he does, but that just makes his own law-abiding nature even more curious.

I reckon he does, but that just makes his own law-abiding nature even more curious. Dave's discretion is probably why it's so popular with those minors, they know that he hears no evil speaks no evil etc. We forget until recently enough UK pubs shut their doors from 2.30pm till 5.30pm, I was working in a West end pub myself at this time, so it was an exodus to the nearest club for certain punters at 2.30pm. No internet and very few mobiles back then so if you wanted to see someone in particular, chances were you could do so by trying a few of the local clubs in the afternoons until you got lucky. Also Dave has to be above board and seen to be so or he wouldn't be granted his licence, and also we see in Days of Fines and Closures S7.3 when Rycott is intent on opposing Dave's licence it's pointed out to him by D.C. Jones that it would scatter the villians to the ''four corners of West London'' So the status quo suited everybody.

Tel's motor was a shiny new Capri in the prior episode, but he's back to his original white one in this episode?

I'd like to have seen Vernon make another appearance or two as well. It would have been easy enough for Arthur to return Lenny Beaumonts favour by lending Terry out in a time of need. I'm not sure Arthur would be very keen on lending Terry to Lenny Bowman after Vernon betrayed him and started working for Matthews, forcing him to go to the meet. A bit surprised Arthur & Terry are happily sitting in the cafe with Vernon at the end. I reckon Vern knew he was on a hiding to nothing with Matthews and he wouldn't get anything out of him so he sided with Arthur again as he would get paid then or something like that

Classic episode with some great lines and a great plot. I am not a big fan of Mike Reid but he was excellent in this. Matthews being shoved in the boot of the bandits car and it being left in the air on the digger was genius.

What is printed on Des’ t-shirt that he’s wearing in the Winchester Club? The only word I clearly make out is Prison.
