Thanks to minder.org's roaming reporter felixdeburgh, some behind the scenes info from Cyd Child about the scenes when they’re in the flat at the end. The director wanted a long shot of each one entering the room, only problem was the only way they could do it and position the camera was to enter from a small bathroom. So, they all squeezed in but it meant that Cyd and Dennis had to stand in the bath to wait for their cue. Cyd said to Dennis, “Well if nothing else on this shoot, I can say I’ve shared a bath with Dennis Waterman”. Cyd also confirmed that she was dubbed as they wanted the character to have a butch-sounding voice. Thanks to felixdeburgh for sourcing this info, super stuff felix. Fascinating, thank you so much for sharing

I watched half of this yesterday evening and the other half just now (how dare people expect me to work??!!)... another excellent one imo as we have the well planned scam at the hotel, the brilliant and cleverly written wine tasting and the hilarious encounter with plod. I love this bit so much I rewound it and watched it a couple of times.

I had forgot Peter Jeffery (aka Clive Stannard in this ep) was also Napper Wainright in the brilliant Porridge ...worse than Mackay....

Pretty decent episode I thought. Arthur’s wine mate had some front, he sells him a load of iffy wine, then when he gets bumped by some call girl he blames Arthur. Gordon bennet. Arthur was pretty convincing too that he had nothing to do with it. Seems like the muscle he had behind him forced Arthur and Terry into some action.
The fight scene in the adult shop was pretty tasty, all playing out while plod digs up Arthur for being parked on double yellow. When Terry checked a guy against the shop window it looked a sore one, the window pane looked like it could have took his head off with a bit more force. I take it that would be safety glass, it didn’t look like it the way it cracked. Health and safety a bit more lax back then. Terry managed to sort out Arthur wit( a present for him n er indoors😬
I recognised the japanese business man as Arthur put it.
Arthur took a sore one with a vase over 5he napper by some bird near the end. It all worked out well for him at the end with Chisholm unknowingly helping out meaning he’s got the dodgy vinegar for free.

This type of thing was pretty common practice amongst the lower level criminals and wideboys of the day scotch. They'd do a deal, hand someone a fistful of cash and then use an accomplice to steal it back. The 'Japanese' businessman was played by Burt Kwouk who made many appearances but for me, will always be Kato from the Pink Panther films.

Kato of course, I knew I’d seen him before.

Your right Rob about the Aussie bird she was pretty tasty I wouldn’t want to go head to head with her.
I can imagine that being a common scam amongst certain types Barry. Old Arthur’s reputation obviously preceded him, but he wouldn’t stoop to those levels surely.

No I don't think he would either scotch. Arthur loved making/saving a few quid but he'd draw the line at pulling off something like that, he was old school.

Really enjoyed this episode. I agree with pr1 about the way Terry plays the wine tasting, absolutely spot on and what I’d probably do in the same circumstances.

In the Winchester near the end when Chisholm lifts Clive Stannard he puts his hand on Arthur's shoulder as if he would just love to take Arthur in for questioning as well. Arthur's very relieved comment to Dave after they have left "You make a big saving when the law's on your side, Dave, get me a large one" and the look on his face is comic genius.

Chisholms life long ambition was to 'nick' Arthur I reckon so yes, he'd loved to have thought he could have included Arthur in Stannards scams

Bit of an underrated episode this one. Terry playing along at the wine tasting is just great and his reaction when he thinks matey is going to spit the wine on the floor 🤣. Also a right chuckle when Arthur is on the dog in the phone box with the crossed line 😂. And as mentioned great scenes in/outside the adult store 🤭. I hadn’t really taken in how little Chisholm and Rycott are deployed in the earlier series’.

Watched this afternoon, really like this one, lots to like for me.
Feel sorry for the poor lass who has taken up "massaging" when she finds herself hard up, quite a regular occurrence in the 80s.
I was amazed Britbox left the term 'nip' in though, when speaking about the Japanese guy in the hotel room.

Could never take to this one. Im not sure why? The poor picture quality doesn’t really help. I didn't think the PQ was bad on this at all, which makes me think they have been cleaned up for Britbox. Don't get me wrong though, I am not meaning full HD upgrade in anyway.

I loved this episode. It has some great plots to it and some fantastic actors such as Ron Pember, Peter Jeffrey and of course Burt Kwouk. In addition some great comedy moments like Arthur outside the Adult Store and Terry doing the wine tasting. For me though, the pathos around the character of Sandra is what makes this. Sadly forced to turn to sleaze to feed the kids she gives Terry her number. When he rings she is out and is told by her unknowing mum ‘She is at work’....and the penny drops with Terry. Very prophetic and quite sad , however brilliantly written and acted.

The picture is noticeably better on britbox well more in line with the episodes from that era maybe they got hold of another print or something ?

A Nice Little Wine seems to go under the radar when fans talk about the classic episodes of Minder, which is a shame because it is one of the best episodes in my opinion. Firstly I love the plot - Arthur and Terry have turned detective in searching for Bettina and the people she works for, with Terry going undercover to track the guilty party down - (similar to Come In T64). I enjoy the way the story moves along and while it is a more serious episode there are scenes which make me laugh everytime - Arthur contending with a crossed phone line "No, I am not the Star of India". Terry at the wine tasting convention "Fine nose on it"..."Splendid". Arthur and his pretend migraine trying to keep the policemans attention away from the great punch up in the you know what shop "What do you want me to do? Drive round bumping into people". Love the final scene when Arthur and Terry taste the terrible wine they have been lumbered with "That is a good, little table wine" "If you want to strip the polish off the table yeah" "Eh I know a French polisher" that look on Terry's boat...priceless. Brilliant cast as well - Peter Jeffrey, Rachel Davies, Ron Pember, Pam St Clement, Burt Kwouk. My favourite line of all is in the Winchester when Arthur realises Clive believes it was him who set Clive up with the massage and robbery - "If you want to have your sacroiliac manipulated that's your business"- genius. I could go on all day. Series 2 and 3 are probably peak Minder for me (although I love them all), A Nice Little Wine is one of my favourite Minder episodes ever. You could say it's vintage Minder. 5 out of 5.

This episode was shown on ITV4 again earlier this week, albeit edited. Re: the incidental music in this episode - the music starting at about 40:31 on the original, unedited episode (when Bettina comes out of Sojo's room), and heard again at about 42:37, is something else - anyone know who it's by and what it's called?

Not of the top of my head - it's a G minor chord though, alternating(!) between Bb and G bass notes I think. Guitar tracks are usually Rae/McDonald in Minder, but it could be anybody.

Good, solid Minder fare with fine acting throughout. Good to see Chisholm at the end, albeit uncredited. I think I sussed the hotel porter straight away as being involved in the scam. Felt sorry for the second masseuse as she really looked as if she needed Terry when she gave him her phone number. Laughed out loud at the line "Nip having a nap", although I should probably book myself immediately on to a diversity awareness course. Especially as I also laughed at the phrase 'Moroccan vinegar' as a descriptor of the wine.
I didn't notice anything wrong with the picture quality - I'm watching a Fremantle Media box set.

One I remember from men & motors days. Cracking little episode.Loved seeing Terry playing the businessman and the whole wine testing scene. Some good belly laughs when poor Arthur showed such intenstinal fortitude after being smashed over the head with a vase with only his love of money keeping him awake and in the contest clinging to the ruthless Bettina's ankle.Arthur showed a nice ufc style single leg takedown 13 years before the ufc was born and poor Tels fight with the butch housemate judo master was another early mma exhibition of boxing versus aikido.brilliant casting...Pat Butcher was nice as the mum,the wrong un from Porridge and 'hair stylist' who took a liking to Tel.zand of course the bobby and Arthurs dpuble vision Mustard another excellent rating.

Did anyone else notice how, unlike, say, in series five, "cheerful Charie" Chisholm's interaction with Arthur was incredibly brief and even gives him a chance to back off while arresting Clive?

Good episode. Terry's drink with Sandra was touching with Arthur bringing it back down to earth "..hundred quid on a night out and you bring me back a bloody social problem." Nice balance of cynicism and warmth.

I like this episode a lot 👍 very entertaining, great dialogue and guest stars. My only complaint is not enough Rachel Davies... Felt sorry for Terry when he phoned Sandra and is told she is out 'working'. A poignant moment. I noticed some comments about the PQ in earlier posts. My viavision copy is noticeably poor compared to the other episodes which generally have good transfers. I always held out hope that one day there would be a blu ray of Minder, restored from the original negs. Now Network have gone bust there is no chance!!

Saw this the other night, for first time in a while..a good episode, to be sure.. For one thing, Rachel Davies as Bettina was memorable..
That's all I'd say about it for the very time being...other than a question to jno, or anyone else who may know..
At around the 17 and a half minute mark, Terry is at the main desk of the hotel, speaking with the bird there... Now, said bird, who looks somewhat familiar, does not seem to be credited, or even listed as uncredited, despite having dialogue..
So anyone know who she is, and what the deal is with that?
