Gave this a watch on Monday during my Minder marathon, not a bad episode at all. Arthur being involved in the wine industry was always going to end in tears and sure enough it did.
The lovely Rachel Davies makes an appearance as the tart without a heart, Bettina. Along with Pam St Clement, aka Pat Wicks/Butcher/Evans, from Eastenders pops up playing the mother of Sandra, the tart with a heart. Also Ron Pember, one of my favourite character actors makes an appearance as the hotel porter.
My favourite scene was Arthur outside the "adult shop" with the policeman whilst Terry is having a punch up. A bit of comedic acting from George Cole can turn any episode into a winner for me.

One of Arthurs funniest moments when he says in all innocence..
"..I had a sixty-nine the other night!"
Always makes me laugh..

I have never understood why the picture quality on this one is so bad. I was sent a copy direct from TV archives many years ago, one episode on a single 1 hour VHS tape and the quality was exactly the same, full of 'lines'.
I have never found out the reason for this. It's almost as if it's an NTSC transfer.

There are a few quality issues on the DVD box set, thats why it would be a no brainer to buy re-mastered blue rays when they get around to doing Minder, you know it makes sense .

It would be interesting to know why the picture quality of this episode is so low. Was the original negative left outside during a storm or something? I found the episode a bit dull but not bad. Terry at the wine tasting and Arthur's confrontation with the cop were both amusing.

Yes, this one is the poorest quality ep on my Freemantle DVD set also. Probably one of my least watched eps but no reason why really...I like this one as has a bit of everything for me...and always nice to see Tel at the gym! I like the Terry's flat scenes as well, when they're opening up the first bottle Good scrap in the dodgy shop and Terry's little present for Arthur always makes me laugh! And big Billy Gresham seems one person even Terry is wary of... "And you'll like her old mum an all!" Not the most gripping episode granted, but Arthur and Terry both on good form in this one I think

A lot to like about the episode. Would be interesting to hear why it wasn't repeated for nearly 20 years and the scratchy picture quality. Good story with plenty of strands. Terry at the wine tasting was very good. The dodgy massage service and Arthur's "migraine" outside the sex shop was pure class.
A third brief, and uncredited, appearance by Patrick Malahide as Chisholm. It would be interesting to know what the plan was with Chisholm at this point. Was it thought of to increase his role to what it became?

Was it thought of to increase his role to what it became? I don't think there was any plan. I believe it was more that, yes Chisholm was the face of the law but as time progressed it was becoming more evident that the they could have a little sub-plot of their own and they were there to be ridiculed more than respected.

Just seems a waste of Patrick Malahide just using him for 2 minutes here and there. I know he wasn't a big name at this time but it was still obvious what a good actor he was.

A welcome return to form this one after what are in my opinion, two weaker episodes. Arthur trying to mix in circles that he's not used to is always hilarious (shades of Tony Hancock) such as in Willesden Suite. Bettina's flat was Bodie's home in the 1979 Professionals episode The Purging of CI5 and her flat mate was played by Cyd Child, who was the stunt double for Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson on The Avengers. Here she is in Minder:

After many, many viewings of this one, I've just noticed that some of George's (Ron Pember) dialogue is dubbed. Terry realises that George is the middle man and returns to the hotel to confront him in the hotel kitchens. George admits his involvement and says "Ok, but I don't run the racket."
The words 'the racket' are dubbed in but I can't make out what George is actually saying. Can anyone lip read?

I like the bit where Arthur and Terry get the money back in the womens' flat at the end and Terry says "we won't stay for tea" before leaving.

I also like it when Arthur & Terry are outside Bettina's flat and Arthur says he will go in to get the money and Terry says "Listen, if you need me do your Owl call!"

This episode must have been repeated in the late 80s , on ITV , as I always remember seeing one around this time where Arthur drove a grey Rover SD1 , instead of his usual Jag My box set is quite a recent one , but the quality of this particular episode , as you have mentioned above is still very poor , especially the title sequence & theme tune sounding very distorted Despite this , it is still a good one , with my favourite scene being the punch up in the sex shop , carrying on behind Arthur s conversation with the copper Note how Chisholm still refers to Arthur , by his first name at this point , by the later series , as he becomes more intolerant he just calls him Daley , usually prefixed with some derogatory remark A minor role only here , for Burt Kwouk - During this period he spent most of his time , avoiding being hit by VW Golfs that suddenly dropped out of the sky !

I don't have a definitive answer but when Minder was first on satellite TV I recorded every episode. 'A Nice Little Wine' was not broadcast. I have a feeling that 'The Balance of Power' was also missed out. I remember hearing 'A Nice Little Wine' being referred to as a lost episode but I can't remember who by. Around this time I had an idea that I was going to write a Minder episode guide (unfortunately life got in the way and it didn't happen) so one day I did an audit of my VHS tapes and worked out which episodes I was missing (including the two above). For some reason I was missing two episodes from the Ray Daley series. Fortunately the chap I spoke to who was responsible for the Thames video/picture library could not have been more helpful and two days later I received the tapes in the post at no charge. I still have them but I haven't looked at them for years. I will dig out the copy of A Nice Little Wine and see what it looks like and how it compares with the DVD releases. I suspect it has timecode on it but the fact that it could be located so quickly suggests that ANLW wasn't actually lost. Maybe something happened to the original master and it wasn't considered fit for broadcast at the time.

Its certainly going to be interesting to see what Network make of this episode when/if the Blu-Ray transfer ever takes place. Silk purse out of a sows ear springs to mind

I would love to know the story behind the liney picture on this one. As Wynn says, this one is going to require a bit of extra effort if and when a BD transfer ever transpires.

I enjoyed this one more the second time around. Arthur's encounter with the cop is still very funny. I particularly like the way Terry at the wine tasting is played. The obvious way to have done it would be for Terry to act like he knows what he's doing and then make a fool of himself by screwing up. It is much better this way and more fitting for the character of Terry to have him listen carefully and then chime in with the phrases he's just learned and best of all he gets away with it. The final scene at Terry's flat is a gem with Arthur going to find some way to make an earner out of the situation.

I liked this episode. Alot of confrontations. Really had it's moments as mentioned in the previous posts. I thought the confrontation trying to get the money back was very interesting. I have noticed the quality is a bit off as well unlike the other episodes.

Loved this episode, Terry trying to be a wine salesman and totally out of his depth, but manages to find a way to fit in and confuse those around him enough for them to accept it, and then resisting the temptation to play with the masseuse! He’s growIn up is tel

As all brother Minder chaps have stated, the picture quality of this episode is very poor, even though the episode is a good storyline.

Thanks to minder.org's roaming reporter felixdeburgh, some behind the scenes info from Cyd Child about the scenes when they’re in the flat at the end. The director wanted a long shot of each one entering the room, only problem was the only way they could do it and position the camera was to enter from a small bathroom. So, they all squeezed in but it meant that Cyd and Dennis had to stand in the bath to wait for their cue. Cyd said to Dennis, “Well if nothing else on this shoot, I can say I’ve shared a bath with Dennis Waterman”. Cyd also confirmed that she was dubbed as they wanted the character to have a butch-sounding voice. Thanks to felixdeburgh for sourcing this info, super stuff felix.

Great to have little snippets of inside information like this. The next time I watch this one i'll be thinking of this when the scene plays.

Watched and enjoyed this episode today. Interesting material above about Cyd Child. I noticed her line was dubbed. But an excellent episode, plenty in it.

Maybe the print had been damaged or degraded somewhat prompting ITV and other channels to miss it out on the repeat runs? I thought it was a bit sad that the Sandra character and Terry never got together or stayed in touch but then you couldn't, could you? JB

I thought it was a bit sad that the Sandra character and Terry never got together or stayed in touch but then you couldn't, could you? JB I think Terry would have kept in touch, had a drink with Sandra and even looked out for her if she had any difficult 'customers' but Sandra obviously wanted something more which as you say - 'you couldn't, could you'.

Another little thing I noticed in this episode was the sound of a tube train passing when Arthur and Terry are in Terry's flat, I can't recall this happening any other time?
