Rest in peace Jackie Collins... Yes sad news today that she has passed away. Here she is mentioning she was on Minder when she appeared alongside Gary Webster on Aspel + Co in 1993. Reminded me very much of her Minder appearance sitting next to Paul Barber.

Watched this last night, nice episode. I like Paul Barber, thought he played the part well, of course wasn't a match for our Tel, but then who is? Didn't like the opening sequence when they had the spoof chat show, just seemed a bit too contrived for Minder.
Also noticed a bit part for a young Jesse Birdsall, as one of the youths watching the boxing in The Winchester

I quite like this episode but there are a few cheesy moments. As mentioned, the chat show and training workout are a little iffy, as are the scenes in the gym whilst Willie is sparring. I'm sure there are a few Barney Mathers' on the boxing scene, his character is a good depiction but the bearded associate with the dark glasses that Mather is trying to impress is laughable and the dolly birds turn it into farce imo.

Arthur is still quite daring at this point in Minder, purposely tipping the youth's (Jesse Birdsall) pint over him in the Winchester!

The other dodgy element in this one is the tune playing at the disco. Although I like it, it seems very out of place at a disco of the time.

....don't think he would have been quite so daring if Terry wasn't with him though
It's great to see Arthur in this kind of mood, I particularly like the scene in 'The Beer Hunter' when he challenges the newly married Groom to a punch-up in the street .

The first episode I don't particularly care for. Not really bad just not up to the shows usual high standards. To be fair, when I started watching Minder I knew there was bound to be at least one episode I wouldn't like. I think my biggest complaint is that Terry and Arthur seem like the supporting characters rather than leads. I thought Willie was a cliche and the story predictable. It was nice to hear more of the theme song during the training sequences.

OFAH - that's the show everybody remembers him from, but he's had memorable parts in The Full Monty, The Long Good Friday, Boys From the Blackstuff, and perhaps most notably Gangsters. For my money one of the UK's most underrated actors.
Interesting to note that Tania Rogers from Gangsters also appears in Don't Tell Them Willie Boy was Here in a very different role.

Agree with that ltd, Paul Barber is definitely underated and sadly arguably typecast because of OFAH.
Tania Rogers (reminder - who plays Willie's wife Ruth) was also in Jackie Collins' 'The Stud' - I wonder if that is how she somehow ended up in this one? Oliver Tobias also in 'The Stud' is probably a candidate for actor who should have appeared in Minder too I think.

Decent episode. Paul Barber is very convincing as the arrogant boxer, a mix of Ali and John Conteh. Good Terry fight sequences at the disco (dodgy dancing though) and at Willie's apartment.

This one must have been rarely repeated by ITV in the late 80s , as I don't remember much about it at all A very "of its time" episode , with a few scenes appearing a bit tacky by todays standards , especially the opening chat show & the "Benny Hill" style "birds" that accompanied Willie - An amusing scene in the club , looking very much like a 1980 Top of the Pops !! I thought the pre Denzil , Paul Barber played the part very well An unusual use of the theme tune , as incidental music , when Terry & Willie are training Not really a great episode for car spotting , apart from that pimped up Volkswagen LT , that Terry gets to drive Willie around in Compared to other 2nd season episodes , this is one of the weaker ones

I'm surprised that this one isn't regarded more highly - I think it's great. The fight scenes are very well done and really evoke the atmosphere.

I think it's a good, solid episode too felix but I do have to agree with gra that there are a few noticeable 'cheesey' moments. The scenes in the gym and the TV chat show make me cringe a little but there's lots of quality stuff too. Also, the idea of Terry befriending and mentoring another boxer is very believable imo. As i said, good, solid stuff

Watching this for the second time my opinion hasn't changed. It's ok but nothing special. After the strong episodes proceeding it this one comes up lacking. Still, even average episodes of Minder are worth watching again.

I thought the episode was nicely put together. Another episode in series 2 with good production value. The characters between them were good. It does make Terry's character worth while. The boxer was really tough and look like he needed some help to understand why he boxes.

Watched in bed this morning on ITV4 with sign language to help me. The sparring scenes are embarrassing and Willie at the end of the fight in a shameless Rocky ending. How the gals in the gym with "I love Willie" T-Shirts got away with that, I'll never know. Despite appearing to be in their early 20's, I doubt they'd see 30 again in real life. Then again, I'm grumpy in the morning.

A very "of its time" episode , with a few scenes appearing a bit tacky by todays standards , especially the opening chat show I think the chat show is meant to be though? From Willie's comments it's fairly clear it's a poor man's rival to Parkinson. I think the actor portraying the put upon host played his part well. Slightly different era I know, but you used to see a lot of people just like him in the early years of daytime TV. Shades of Alan Partridge perhaps?

It's a fine episode, very well put together on the whole, I felt, by Euston. I've always liked it loads, but I do also feel less compulsion to rewatch it, at least frequently, less so than other series 2 episodes...but I enjoyed this viewing today. - It's written by one Paul Wheeler, and the other episodes of Minder he's credited with are all fun episodes, too.
- We start with a rare guest appearance of a celebrity playing themselves..not sure how many other exist.
- I liked the character of the Mersey Mouth, cheesy as that name sounds. I found it interesting seeing how such a public figure is actually not who he seems, having to psyche himself up, & "get in character" before an appearance.
- Although not liked by many here, I did not mind the sparring scenes, and while it was not as prominent as in Rocky Eight And A Half, Waterman's boxing experience seems to have helped him some here.
- DAAAAAAAAYO.....daaaaaaaayo. Someone had to say it.
- Terry's speech to Arthur in the Winch is one of his better ones in the series, I reckon.
- I too enjoyed hearing the theme tune, as used in the training scenes. Also, the bird Willie chases in the park.
- I like WILLIE...all in capitals, so that it looks less like a bloke's name..very smart, indeed.
- Vicki Michelle, two years prior Allo Allo, is fine here and all. Particularly liked the cute way she asked Willie if he'd seen her shoe. Out of interest, anyone have any idea what the music was in that scene, with Willie and Terry, and then Vicki's character entering?
- The blonde accompanying Vicki Michelle, Mandy Perryment I believe, was fine as well. And as mentioned on the episode page, Imogen Bickford-Smith is still probably more recognisable as Nicky Henson's girlfriend in Fawlty Towers' The Psychiatrist.
- I do not believe I have seen Tania Rogers in anything else other than this..but she was fine, believable as the boxer's wife throughout.
- The character of the promoter, Bernie Mathers was suitably played. The more I felt he'd be given time on screen, the more reprehensible we'd think him to be.
- I was sure I had posted this point once, but never mind; the scene where Willie clocks Mathers and his bearded mate in the middle of the bout, and recalls Tel's words, was great, clearly meant to be the turning point in the fight.
- Arthur contradicts himself in this, having told Terry in National Pelmet to go with his instincts when betting.
- Arthur trying to "accidentally" turn on the telly at the end is great. So are the shots of the victorious Willie.
the idea of Terry befriending and mentoring another boxer is very believable imo. Yes, I agree there. Reminded me very much of her Minder appearance sitting next to Paul Barber. Yes, I could see what you meant there, jno..good video, rip. Arthur is still quite daring at this point in Minder, It's great to see Arthur in this kind of mood, I particularly like the scene in 'The Beer Hunter' when he challenges the newly married Groom to a punch-up in the street . Yeah..his manhandling of The Ferret in the pokey sticks out in the mind, as well.

Didn't care for this one I'm afraid. I thought the fight scenes were really poor. Whenever DW is in the ring, you can see that he knows his way around - how to hold his head and hands, good footwork, easy to tell he was a handy amateur once. Paul Barber, although a very good actor, looks totally unconvincing and that detracts from the episode. Admittedly, it is extremely difficult to film a convincing boxing sequence when the actors are having to pull their punches. Interestingly, the guy playing Willie Reynold's opponent (Jack Straw) was Alex Tompkins. I did a little research and was surprised to find he was actually a pro' boxer, don't know if that has been noted on the forum, but he boxed out of West Ham between 1974-83 so was active at time of filming. You can find his ring-record here : boxrec.com/en/proboxer/27178

I remember Dave 'Boy' Green from the '80s.
I seem to remember a 30 minute programme aired every week witch featured short boxing bouts on BBC2? and Dave 'Boy' Green featured regularly.

Watching this again tonight. My opinion of it hasn't changed. I had forgotten about Terry's crack that he's really a brain surgeon and just moonlighting as a minder. I do find that amusing.

good episode, although as a poster said, you can Dennis knows his way around a boxing ring, while Paul looked stiff as a poker and him in the boxing ring looked far from convincing.......

This episode now carries the grave warning on the Sky programme guide: "Contains extended sequence of boxing match".
