Gave this a watch yesterday, always like this episode for some reason, probably because it takes Terry out of his manly world and into the Gay world. For some reason I always thought Chris Biggins played Jim. The part where Terry is spotted in a gay bar was quality. Also the look on Arthurs face when he drops in when Jim had his hand on Terrys knee on his bed was priceless also. Of course the man stakes were upped with Terry bedding Gloria Brompton.
A different direction for a Minder episode and the discomfort in Arthur and Terry being around Gay people was probably bang on for the time.
The two "Heavies" who were threatening Jim, turned out to be quite funny once Terry caught up with them, especially John Forgehams character with his new hair.
One of the traits I love about Minder is the different ways the writers came up with how Arthur and Terry could be earning.

I love this episode and the part where Arthur walks in and Terry is on the bed with jim. Also love the end when Arthur tries to get off from the nurse who's watch isn't working and Terry stops him. Class.

There's a bit of dialogue in this one which I'm surprised escapes the editing knife on recent ITV4 showings. On hearing of Terrys concerns about the possibility of Jim making a pass at him, Arthur says, "Well, if he tries any of that stuff with you, tell him you're sorry but you're normal..." 'Normal'. I thought the PC brigade would be straight on to this like a shot.

An iron?
I wouldn't have got this but a brief search on the internet suggests that iron is an abbreviation of 'iron hoof'

...and 'iron hoof' is rhyming slang for poof.

Cracker of an episode, the part with Terry and Jolly Jim on the bed is class, and the look Arthur has on his boat while being around an "iron" is superb, GC had a way of telling a story just by a raise of an eye brow.

I'm just a few minutes into this episode and Arhtur is already up his ears in dodgyness! Great stuff!

A fine episode that demonstrates the range of story possibilities in the series. By today's standards some of it is extremely politically incorrect but that doesn't keep it from being entertaining.

Outstanding episode. Great comic timing by all concerned. I'm sure the liberals hate this episode but there are so many laughs to be had, particularly when John Forgeham pleads with Terry not to damage his hair transplant. Janet Key looks good in this episode (lucky Terry!) Superb subplot with Arthur's dodgy watches. One minor quibble is that 'Jolly Jim' was very easily taken in by Alex's wife.

Janet Key looks good in this episode (lucky Terry!) This is the fourth time Dennis Waterman and Janet Key appeared together - they are in The Sweeney pilot 'Regan', The Sweeney episode 'Abduction' and they are also German boyfriend and girlfriend in the 1970 Paul Temple episode 'Double Vision'. She was also in 'The Vampire Lovers' billed alongside our very own George Cole.

I recalled her playing Kate Regan. Excellent actress she was too.

The second year of Minder got off to quite a start with two great episodes in a row. I didn't remember this one all that well and it is very good! Not very PC at times by today's standards but Terry and Arthur's attitudes are believable for their characters considering when this was made.

I forgot to ask this before. Does anyone know or have an idea of what Terry's gran is watching so intently on her telly? It sounds like an instruction in electronics.
It seems like an odd choice of viewing for an elderly lady but it makes for an amusing scene. Especially when Arthur shows up and the old woman falls all over him.

Not sure what programme it is but back then in the UK there were only 3 channels and only educational shows were on until lunch time. Well, on week days.

I would say it's an 'Open University' episode. I remember them being shown when I was younger, usually on BBC2, i think they were programmes which helped with home study when trying to obtain a Degree.

I'd need to have another look at it but I agree an OU ep does seem likely. Weren't these sometimes shown during the AM schools and colleges spot too though?

I'd have thought a fellow Thames show. Remember when they used to go to someone's house in The Bill (probably on the Jasmine Allen estate) and it always seemed to be Count Duckula on the TV?

I seem to remember them being shown in the mornings at weekends too. If the weather was bad, meaning i couldn't go out on the Grifter, TV was the next option and with only three channels to choose form, as already mentioned and one of them showing this stuff, it could be a long wait until World of Sport/The Big Match.

I know it shouldn't be, but the scene in the antique shop where Terry points out Jim's orientation to Arthur has me in stiches. The look on both their faces when he catches them in contact and Arthurs deep voice in reply is priceless.
Incidentally, what is the origin of the word "case", when describing living/co-habiting with somebody?

It surprises me a little that someone as wordly wise as Arthur doesn't realise Jim is gay. I'm also surprised Arthur finds it so scary and has to acts so defensively. I also find it very, very funny though , perfectly acted by GC.

Grandma was a surprising appearance and role made for the show. I was like 'damn, she looks too old to appear on television'. Molly Veness must have been well in her 80s when that episode was filmed. That explains a lot for Terry's character.

That explains alot for Terry's character. Visiting Terry's Gran was a great little scene. Her house was very sparse and didn't have many modern amenities. She knew Arthur and seemed quite honoured to think he had visited her on her birthday with gifts, she obviously thought he was a prominent, well to do person. It's a shame she didn't appear in a couple more episodes.

The scene in the hospital where Arthur first goes to visit Alex, is actually shortened compared to the script..the script has Alex asking Arthur if Terry fancies women (and Arthurs rather confused replies) and how Terry feels about group sex!
And Terry's gran was originally meant to be his mum in her mid 50s! The Director, Roy Ward Baker, changed it to his grandmother in her seventies....clearly RWB knew some Minder history by now...and already knew Terrys mum had died some while ago
I'll try and put this part of the script (missing from the broadcast ep) in The Vault..

Thing is, in series 1 Terry mentions that his mum still thinks that he is a Chauffeur in one of the episodes.

I watched this one for the first time in ages over Easter, and it is a good episode. Arthur and Terry are a bit wary of Jim, but they helped him.
I like it when Terry says about Jim "can't you see, the geezer is a raving iron!". Then he says "I've got nothing against irons". This plus several "poofters" means that ITV4 do not show it now! I also like the bit where Dave and Terry are talking in Winchester. Dave says "how does Terry like having to stay with Jim?". Arthur says "he loves it" and they start laughing.
