It wasn't late afternoon followed by about 9am was it? As that's their standard pattern They aired 'Gunfight' yesterday afternoon, ep2 - 'Bury My Half' this morning and then 'Gunfight' again this afternoon which seemed a bit strange, as you say lc, not their standard pattern. Shows how much time has passed and how long ago it was when Arthur asks Tel's girl for 2p to make a phone call! 43 years ago.. Gawd. In 1979 that would be the equivalent of looking back to.... (gulp)....1936.... Gunfight is listed to be shown AGAIN on Monday morning at 12.45am, with Bury My Half later that morning at 9.55am. Sad to see the opening titles today and realise that George and Dennis are both now gone to that great Winchester in the sky.

First up... jno ^^^^^^^ - note the above post, please. Gunfight at the OK LaundretteMy rewatch of Minder from the start has begun, this time watching the Umbrella/VVL DVDs, which provide a much better viewing experience than the equivalent UK discs IMO. (And an entertaining and informative George Cole / Johnny Goodman commentary, no less, moderated by the redoubtable Jaz Wiseman.) Having recently been watching Series 6, tracking back to the first (transmitted) episode is a little shocking. It's a lot more edgy, with robbers threatening to blow little old ladies to kingdom come for instance. While both Terry and Arthur are pretty much fully formed in terms of their characters, it does feel here like Arthur's taking a bit of a back seat compared to Terry (well, I suppose the series is called 'Minder' and Terry's the minder!). The fact that they spend most of the episode apart (aside from conversing a couple of times by phone) means that we get to know about them by how they interact with others rather than with each other. Right from the start, you realise that Arthur is prepared to cash in on Terry's predicament, which while he's a 'diamond geezer' is Arthur all over. He can't resist a moneyspinning opportunity even if it's not in the best of taste. There's humour in the script but it's kept to a minimum really. Though the funniest thing in this one is Chisholm's hairstyle... A bit of an epic start to the series, and it's nice to see that from the off they're riffing on movie titles for comic mileage. Excellent stuff, all told.

I've set myself a Minder Monday target for the next 108 weeks ! So to start at the beginning ... I take the points people make about a more serious feel to this and other earlier episodes but the humour is there all the same. The two reluctant sidekicks not wanting to go to Ethiopia "That's In Africa " ! Ludicrous demands for a helicopter and jumbo jet ! The hastily claimed political motivation and the name of revolutionary group IRA made up by Stretch on the spur of the moment - much to surprise of the 2 co-conspirators. Chisholm's barnet looking suspiciously like a hair transplant on top. It gives me the impression that the violence and gun play is not really being taken that seriously - you even feel a touch of sympathy for Stretch as a misguided young man unsure of his way in the world but not fundamentally a hardened criminal. I didn't watch Minder as first broadcast until well into the early eighties (my rented flat didn't have an aerial connection until I paid for it ! ) so it might have appeared different back then - by surely the other police and underworld TV dramas around at the time were far more explicit in their portrayals of the seedy & violent side of life. Lastly do we know the name of the pub interior filmed - it's looks genuine and not a set . I have a list of Minder pubs ( from earlier versions of this board ) but nothing was listed apart from the Rockingham - I've added the Apple Tree subsequently.
Edit - just to add . I think the over-the-top police response to the hold-up is also played for laughs. Reminds me of a scene from Dad's Army - where downed German airmen took hostages in the village hall. Along the lines of the Police called the Army who called the Fire Brigade who called the ARP who called the Coastguard who called the War Office ... or whatever. Poking fun at the police in this case.
To add 2 - The New Rockingham Club in its real life was called The Pleasure Lounge in its final days - straight forward strip club rather than a rip-off clip joint as some may have suggested - although there were plenty of those in Soho at the time . Not that I ever went there (!) . Closed around December 2013 after a police raid . A number of Soho clubs and clip joints were targeted that month on the basis they were venues where fake and stolen goods were being traded.

Just watched Gunfight again this afternoon on ITV4.
It's an underrated episode in my opinion but I always say that. Once again, I particularly enjoyed the street scenes, especially the concrete brutalism of the precinct in which the launderette is located. Nice to see various retro motors as well, including Mk1 Escorts and Rover P6s being used as police cars.
Also a Mk2 Cortina parked outside the launderette. It's easy to forget there were still a good few late-60s cars on the road when Minder first appeared.
I enjoyed seeing the funky brown Mk4 Cortina at the end too though, which would have been a flash new motor in 1979. My first car was a 'Roman Bronze' Mk4 just like that. With a beige vinyl roof. Although mine was seven years old by the time I bought it.

Great.
I love all Minder but I've still got a soft spot for the early episodes. They just somehow feel more 'original' to me inasmuch as they've got that late-70s vibe going on. A lot of people see Minder as an 80s show and, yes, it was in a way. It was at peak popularity in the mid-80s. But its genesis lies in the 1970s - and that comes through in Series One.

The earlier episodes had a grittiness about them that really captured the country as it was at time, the dingy bed sits, the London pubs before gentrification and the old bangers you no longer see much in London.

Absolutely. I lived in Fulham as a student mid-1980 to mid-1982 in a down-at-heel flat and that is exactly right. Poor but happy! Series 2 and 3 were "just up the road" in our mind.

Whilst the earliest posts are wonderful to read, (as I find with all episodes) this one for me, nails the way I saw Minder at the start...
