Chisholm's longer haircut in this episode always makes me smile! Patrick Malahide sports quite a 'Barnet' in the Sweeney episode 'Drag Act'

Strange opener to the series - not typical of the usual set-up but hints of what's to some - "Look tragic, we're on a score 'ere". I would have put this somewhere in the middle of the run. I remember George Cole picking this ep for a repeat as he couldn't pick a fave - I'd have gone for 'Around The Corner' myself...

When the repeat came on in March 1994, it was great to see this as it hadn't been on for years. I agree with your choice though syrup. I am not sure it was intentional and it has been mentioned before that we do get Terry as hostage in the first one and Arthur as hostage in the last one.

The reason this works well as the first episode is, its introduction to Terry and the first comedy element of the show, Arthur saying " shame jhe missed it, likes a nice church service and a luncheon does Terry", then it cuts to Terry in the strip club, appearing to be watching a stripper!

A good start to the series. I wasn't around when this episode first aired but at least I can still understand what's going on and the characters involved and making it the drama it is well known to become.

This episode is statistically the most released episode of the series both on VHS and DVD. Here is a VCD (Video CD) that appeared on the front of DVD Monthly.

Watched this again on ITV4 Fantastic morning watch, GC looks quite young in these earlier episodes. Obviously as he was.

Same, always nice to watch this episode, I keep getting into first few minutes, the Italian wedding, how Terry replaces the coin-boy because he's on his honeymoon etc. Very casual.

On today (again) Some great moments, but why is Terry visibly exhausted after a 45 second fight? Later in the series, he's quite handy, but this fight did him in. Good intro episode.

Very hot and humid in the backroom of the laundrette I suppose but he should have coped with it no problem. You're right ace, Terry looks like he's done 15 rounds with Mike Tyson after the brief punch up.

I think this episode probably works very well as an introductory episode because there is a fair amount of character exposition included, so for a new show it sets up its main characters. It would not be one of my favourites though so I would vote for it as Good. The main premise inevitably makes it a bit claustrophobic. Using a siege for publicity is echoed in 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa' which is one of my favourite recent comedy films though.

Did Terry take the cartridges out of the shotgun so it would look like Stretch’s gun wasn’t loaded when he went in, so he’d be in less trouble? And also where did they go?! Weren’t found when Terry was frisked outside!

I don’t think that would have helped Stretch by that point. The gun shot wound in Alfie’s shoulder would have given the game away.

The early Minders had lots of scenes set in strip clubs or so I've read and yet I can only think of four or five episodes like that and most of those are cut before they reach the screen!!! JB

Rooted the DVDs out the other day to look for some missing locations (don't hold your breath jno!) and as my afternoons triple bill has been replaced by snooker I've decided to rewatch the series in DVD order starting with this one. Some of these I may never have watched before so looking forward to it.

I think 'Gunfight' is an under-rated episode. It's always tricky, the first episode of any series but I think this one does a pretty good job of introducing the two main characters and giving us an impression of how their relationship works (if that's the right term).
Mind you, I've always liked the first series as it has a very 1970s feel to it. I love that era, the dog-end of the 70s, just before Thatcherism really started to bite and change the culture of the nation. For me, Series One really captures that time. The street scenes, the clothes, the whole 'feel' of things.
Nowadays, everybody seems to associate Minder with the 1980s and, whilst the bulk of the show was filmed during the '80s, I prefer to see it as '70s 'thing'. Minder was, after all, conceived in the 1970s and a lot of the characters seem to reflect certain stereotypes from that time. I think Gunfight does a really good job of capturing some of that.

Some of the locations used and Arthur and Terrys lifestyles were different too. Also of course, there wasn't the restrictions on language, personal opinions and violence which came later making s1 quite raw at times. S1 is probably my favourite.

I think I must have started watching Minder live on Monday nights (HTV West) around series 3 or 4 (82/83) so most of the first few series are new discoveries or trigger vague recollections from repeats. I was allowed to watch the Pros on Friday or Saturday nights as a no school night but Minder was off limits until I was about 12.

Yeah, I like seeing London before it was all dolled up. That's how I remember it when I first visited London in the '70s, grimy and generally a bit dog-eared. It's one of the (many) reasons I like watching The Sweeney as well.
