Did anybody read the original Worzel Gummidge books?
I've always fancied having a go at them but I got told the TV series (Pertwee) off the back of them was loads better and that the books were a bit boring and nowhere near as much fun. ??

I read one of the worzel books back then but didn’t rate it. Obviously I must have been a minority,as they went on to do the pertwee&stubbs tv series’s.

Good choices, but no Dick King Smith on there, he wrote loads and loads of kids books. Went for Bylton, Dahl, Briggs & Potter, all were staples of my child hood and now again for my own kids...along with many of those other authors.

I'm sure old Dickie is good but it cannot be an endless list. It was verging on being too long as it was.

As a parent of two daughters I’m chuffed to see Lauren Child has zero votes. Charlie and Lola are probably the worst children’s books ever written.
I was a Famous Five and Secret Seven fan as a child but these days I enjoyed reading Julia Donaldson stories to my girls when they were younger. They’d vote for JK Rowling and Jacqueline Wilson from today’s choices. Poor old Enid hasn’t aged too well for today’s young readers.
