Remember back in the day when they used to make films out of successful UK TV series? Those were the days, eh? Well this latest Death Match is all about reliving those days and picking your favourites. Starting with 1970s comedy series ... Pick 3. It's harder than it looks. Remember it's the film you're voting for, not the show. As Suggested by Billy Farmer.

You're right Arch, it's far harder to pick 3 than you'd think. My two longstanding favourites are 'Dads Army', timeless comedy to which I laugh out loud every time I watch it and 'Likely Lads' which whilst being great comedy, could all so easily be real life.
There's stand out moments in the three 'On The Buses' but they're a bit too silly at times imo. Both 'Steptoe' films start brilliantly but tire a little in the final 30 minutes or so and as much as I love 'Porridge', I had to choose 'Love Thy Neighbour' for it's portrayal of racism as being an acceptable, everyday occurrence in the 70s! Taking such a serious subject and injecting some humour into it without being too offensive takes some doing.

You're right Arch, it's far harder to pick 3 than you'd think. Second that - impossible. I must confess to having not seen all of the above either, probably because I didn't like the TV show much. Thus, in order to use my time more wisely, watched something I know I'd like. I don't see a poop on vinyl option up there so just wondering how that picture is relevant to proceedings here. Nevertheless, have voted the best I can based on those films seen and liked. I think it is cool that TV shows make the occasional film, 'Minder On The Orient Express' probably one of the last of this type of thing, albeit 80s of course. It's a shame there was never a 'Mind Your Language' film - that is one of my favourite 70s comedies that exaggerates and stretches every British interpretation of national stereotype to the max.

The title to the album this sleeve belongs to gives it away.. It's my 'hilarious' in joke. What I should do is deduct a guess from you and give it to the first person that helps you understand the vinyl connection. Someone please enlighten him...

You're right Arch, it's far harder to pick 3 than you'd think. I always am. I keep saying this.. It's so tricky to pick 3, I almost voted Please Sir by mistake.

I have never seen: For The Love Of Ada, Never Mind The Quality Feel The Width or That's Your Funeral.
Any good?

I went with Dad's Army, The Likely Lads and Porridge. All good adaptations of the originals. I'd give Bless This House an honourable mention as well.

Inevitably, the film versions tend to be quite different in tone and storyline from the shows. But I have gone for Dad's Army and the Likely Lads which are two obviously successful films. Some of the others I have never seen and some I have seen are pretty terrible although very successful spin offs from very successful tv shows, the On the Buses franchise would particularly stand out in this regard. The third one I have gone for is Never Mind the Quality Feel the Width. Rather like Love Thy Neighbour this is another film/tv show they would not dare make today but it is interesting in many ways and again the film is quite different from the tv show. It's worth watching on a number of levels, but it is difficult to find today.

I chose Porridge, Likely Lads and Are You Being Served?. A lot of people don't like the Are You Being Served? film but I like it even though it wasn't as good as the series.

Porridge, The Likely Lads and Holiday on the Buses, the final choice being a film which brings back nice memories. I thought this one was tough.

I voted for Dad's Army (1971) and The Likely Lads (1976), will have a good think, before choosing a 3rd film, I like quite a few of the other films, listed above.
I have never seen the film versions of Never Mind the Quality Feel the Width (1973) and That's Your Funeral (1972).
I have always thought the film version of Are You Being Served? (1977), is one of the poorest film versions of a TV Sitcom.

The jokes are so corny they are almost transcending into the realms of inspiration.

I voted for Dad's Army, as I remember going to the cinema (in Basingstoke!) to see it with my dad in 1971. It was very faithful to the TV show, especially since it seemed to comprise a condensed version of several episodes. Very good. I saw The Alf Garnett Saga recently on Youtube... very odd. I can't in all honesty vote for any of the others, although I did see one of the On The Buses films about 12 years ago and found it to be funnier than I expected! I think it was 'Holiday...'.

It's a pity there wasn't a feature length film of 'The Good Life'.
A possible storyline could have been to follow the Goods (and the Ledbetters) through a whole year of self sufficiency.

I agree barrythebook, the good life would have benefited from a feature length episode. fordcapri I also think the on the buses feature lengths were great comedy.

The album is the reverse sleeve of The Sex Pistols Flogging A Dead Horse. Very astute Arch, you played a blinder with that one.

Ace, I knew you'd get the Pistols link.. Good man! Further proof that jno's musical knowledge starts with The Proclaimers and ends with Bryan Adams! I thought it was a nice little DM in-joke. Considering the subject for this particular DM.... Flogging A Dead Horse. Shame it went over a few heads. As Death Match Overlord I fully expect jno to allow you to name one of his choices for him. After he questions my DM judgement and you had to give him a schooling, he only deserves 2xchoices.

No George And Mildred? I remember watching it on a Sunday afternoon some years ago and really enjoyed it. I know it gets a critical kicking though.
Porridge is a great film, even if it lacks the humour of the series.

Dad's Army is my favourite out of the bunch. Also voted for 'Please, Sir'. Not because it's any good, but anything was better than the series. And Steptoe Rides Again is another borderline film.
To be honest, no successful TV comedy has ever translated well into a full feature. They were all dross.

Surprisingly difficult choice as I like most of them , so in no particular order I opted for Porridge, Please Sir, and Man About The House (which nowadays is brutally edited each time it's shown on ITV)

I voted for Holiday on the Buses which is one of greatest films of all time! Bless This House, which is one of my favourites and what a spin off should be. And The Likely Lads which is a charming film and good version of the series.
Porridge and Dad's Army are great films and good spin offs. Are You Being Served is fun too.
Some I have never seen such as The Alf Garnett Saga which is never on tv. Love Thy Neighbour has never been on either for obvious reasons. Father, Dear Father always used to be on Channel 4 and is really good - especially because of the nice daughters!

Steptoe - I prefer 'Ride Again' to the first one. I find the first one a bit downbeat, like the S&S Christmas specials. I voted for Likely Lads. Dad's Army (I didn't vote for) was good too though. Many of those sitcom movies I haven't seen in years though, so I'm not sure I can give a fair appraisal of them.
