Not really a stand-up fan. If I had to choose...
Bob Monkhouse - clever and diverse Lenny Henry - so much more than a comedian Billy Connolly - Outrageous Tommy Cooper. Simple but funny jokes Frank Skinner - Quick wit.

Hard one to pick but went for Dave Allen in the end. I swapped music gigs for comedy as an evening’s entertainment and the wife and I usually went to two or three of the big tours every year.
Edit- sorry Dave, just remembered how many times I saw Lee Evans (5) and witnessing the best standing ovation at Wembley Arena I’ve ever seen so Lee will take the vote for me. Dave, Peter Kay and Steven Wright the warm up for my perfect night of comedy.

Lee Evans? Really poured in the humour during the late 90s.

I'd also have included Max Miller who was a huge influence on comics that followed You mean Frank Miller?

Best Les Dawson joke for me was when a bloke tells him:- "There's five blokes beating up your mother-in-law. Aren't you going to help?" "No, I think five's enough!" In 2000, we had a Christmas night out at Jongleurs and I tried to get off with the comedienne Mandy Knight. I failed but she did buy me a drink. Les - ''The wife wants a holiday..''she said take me somewhere I've never been'' - Try the kitchen..''

Bob Monkhouse - ''My friends used to laugh when I said I wanted to be a comedian...they're not laughing now....''

Bob Monkhouse - ''My friends used to laugh when I said I wanted to be a comedian...they're not laughing now....'' I think Bob was underrated by the public as a stand up but other stand ups really respected him. There's a brilliant documentary called The Last Stand filmed just before his demise where a room full of his fellow stand ups pay homage to him. A master of timing but not as outright funny as my other picks above imho.

There was a lot to the man. The audience in The Last Stand were younger alternative types who would have dismissed him only a few years before, and he was very ill with cancer at the time hence the title. I wouldn't be a fan as such but I admired his professionalism and dedication to his craft.

I've made my choices long ago, but two names I should also have mentioned from this side of the border.
Chic Murray - A genius of comedy, but seems to have been forgotten over the years.
Limmy - Do you get the Limmy Show outwith Scotland? Very surreal and uncomfortable viewing at times, but very good as well, but wouldn't be everyones cup of tea and I don't imagine too many on this forum would like him.

I've only seen Chic Murray in Gregory's Girl, didn't know who he was at first but when he played the piano I thought he must be 'somebody' and recognised the name at the end credits though I've not seen him in anything else, not being a Scot. Just had a look at his Wiki, died at 65 which is young really. BBC Scotland is on my Freeview here in Ireland, I've caught snippets of Limmy though I must take a closer look.

Chic Murray was Billy Connolly's hero and a lot of other Comedians reference him as well I read a book about him an Ronnie Barker called him the Comedians Comedian. He has as very surreal sense of humour and if you listen to him, you can hear hear clearly that Connelly was influenced by him. Here is an article with some of his famous quips.
Limmy is an aquired taste and it took me a while to get him, he doesn't do jokes as such, but is funny in a different way.

Courtesy of Mike Reid’s T’rific he’d vote for Monkhouse as a technician and Billy as the master comedian. All said that was in 1999 so maybe a bit dated. Stan Boardman and a few others I’ve never heard of also get a mention by Reidy.

Only needed one vote - the late great Bill Hicks... Can you imagine what Bill Hicks would have made of nowadays America. Well, there's a question. A lot of his sketches were when he was in England and it sounded then that had escaped a different world. That different world even more 'different' than ever. I think in the middle of a routine he'd have a meltdown...
