UK gothic rock turned US heavy rock band in and out of the UK charts up until 1994 but what (if any) is your favourite chart of theirs? Pick two!
1985 - She Sells Sanctuary
1985 - Rain
1985 - Revolution
1987 - Love Removal Machine
1987 - Lil' Devil
1987 - Wild Flower
1989 - Fire Woman
1989 - Edie (Ciao Baby)
1989 - Sun King
1990 - Sweet Soul Sister (Number 42 in UK charts but did make US Top 40)
1991 - Wild Hearted Son

Billy Duffy is a decent guitarist. Gretsch Falcoln, right jno? I must confess, I didn't know the answer to that one .., so had to ask Tripod 1 aka Google. Indeed it is: www.gretschguitars.com/features/billy-duffy/Fair play, The Cult had a killer sound back in the day. Two votes for 'The Cult, who are they?' Dear oh dear! All I would say though is a LOT of these tunes are D, C and G progressions, right ace5150?

Sun King and Sanctuary for me. Good songs.

Sun King and Sanctuary for me. Good songs. This was a tough one for me - I opted for 'Wild Flower' (first guitar solo I really learnt) (isn't it an AC/DC rip off?) and 'Fire Woman'. There are a lot I could have picked - I love the riffs in 'Lil' Devil' and 'Love Removal Machine' - Sanctuary is a work of art also.

Saw them a few times in the 80's when they were called Southern Death Cult and then Death Cult before they trimmed the name even further. Still got the original vinyl singles and 12"s somewhere. They're were very good by the way.

But unfortunately not soundalike. I was glad Densmore took them to court over the use of the name.

There's 4 that i want to vote for here!
'She Sells Sanctuary' is something iconic from my youth, 'Rain' and 'L'il Devil' are imo the best rock tracks and 'Edie' is something completely diferrent for Cult and it makes the hairs on my arms stand on end.

Just reviewing Top of the pops and Theatre of Hate is on. I SWEAR Billy Duffy is playing guitar on this song, Do You Believe in the Westworld? It's certainly a Gretsch Falcon guitar!

He was playing with them when he met Astbury. I think they were both on the bill the first time I saw Southern Death Cult - supporting Bauhaus in about 1982.

Wild Flower is my favourite. That album Electric had a proper heavy rock AC/DC vibe but I also like their '85 album, especially She Sells Sanctuary which is an upbeat, pacey track. One of their best singles.

Good spotting there ace5150, superb reconnaissance work and you have earned the anorak award for this month. Wow he looks young on here. Interesting to see Duffy playing something OTHER than a D, C, G progession too. Meanwhile 5 votes for 'The Cult, who are they?' - dreadful, just dreadful.

I didn't get in to them as such but I remember some of their chart hits.
I recall seeing a live band in a local pub around 1987. They were a bit indifferent, and after their set the DJ played 'Love Removal Machine' and I thought that it was a better song than anything in the gig.

I've heard their name, but playing these videos, I haven't heard a single one of these before. The bass playing in the first video sounds like they were trying to copy the sound of The Cure.

The Cult were a shining light in what was a poor period of UK music. The Love album is one of my most played but Edie is my favourite single. She Sells Sanctuary a constant reminder of school discos which seemed to clear the floor of all the girls.

Apart from the Billy Duffy wah pedal, this is a must for me guitar nerd brethren on this forum:
