The Madness film "Take It Or Leave It" from 1981 is a must watch for showing the band at the height of their fame and some great locations around Camden and other parts of North London. Watched it a few months ago and enjoyed it a lot, it was a great to watch it not long after reading the book I mentioned above.

Baggy Trousers, the first single I ever got (my parents bought it for me) Return of the Los Palmas 7 was my first single I bought and Madness 7 the first album. It's hard to equate how big a band Madness were for a few years without being a manufactured boy band.

Yeah, don't know why the maps links didn't work. Maybe one of the Illuminati can advise how to link a google maps street view directly?
Bit easier than doing that pic above hopefully.

Who came up with this list? and why is there no 'other' option?
My two favourites would be 'One Better Day' & 'Michael Caine' but neither is listed. Bah!
Of those that did make the cut, 'Embarrassment' and probably 'House of Fun'.
Great idea though; if 'Minder' was the TV programme most synonymous with the 80s, Madness must be the band...

Oh, sorry; didn't read properly!
Just realised it was tracks from the 'Complete Madness' album; my bad.
My own 'embarrassment' moment there...

I've voted for 'Baggy Trousers' and 'Embarrassment' from that list, but really they are just about all cracking tunes. It's astonishing to think that in an era when they were so dominant in the charts and in the youth culture of the early eighties, that Madness only ever recorded one UK no.1 single ('House Of Fun' for two weeks in May 1982).
I'm just a little disappointed not to see '(My Name Is) Michael Caine' in that list, though. In my opinion it's a great song, and certainly their most underrated. It seemed to get slated by Madness fans when it was released in January 1984, perhaps because it was so mature and different from anything they'd done before, and Madness fans (no disrespect intended) don't strike me as the sort of people who embrace change that well. It was written and sung by Chas Smash, and is probably my favourite Madness track...
I also think 'Lovestruck' from 1999 (which reached no.10) is notable for being a breath of fresh air at a time when the charts were particularly moribund. 'Maria' by Blondie was in the charts at the same time, and the irony of the two best singles in that particular top 40 being from old dinosaurs seemed lost on the younger generation at the time!

Night Boat To Cairo - my favourite track to dance to (i use the term loosely) when drink has been taken Bed & Breakfast Man - I've got this on the Madness John Peel Sessions and it's stunningly good Totally agree, and they were my top 2 . That Peel sessions is awesome!

Ahh, sorry to be the geek here kusumkangguru but 'Michael Caine' is NOT on 'Complete Madness', it is on their second compilation 'Utter Madness', released in 1986 - see here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utter_Madness'Complete Madness' has the songs from 1979 to 1982 'Utter Madness' has the songs from 1982 to 1986 Michael Caine was released in 1984.

Surely time for an Utter Madness poll given how many of us enjoyed the Nutty Boys? Or is there one buried somewhere?

There is a documentary called "One Man's Madness" to download on Sky Arts in the UK, all about their saxophonist in the band Lee Thompson.

Think you missed an excellent one from your list, One Better Day. A more mature sound from 84, about Arlington House, a homeless hostel in Camden Town (the song isn't as bleak as the subject) The band would have been very familiar with the hostel and it's characters having grown up in the area, the not very nutty video was shot around Camden Town, some great mid 80s street scenes. A lost classic. Madness - One Better Day - YouTube

I chose Embarassment because it has some personal whatsername to me - remember buying Divine Madness on cassette whilst on holiday in Scotland (Oban it was) and playing it to death on Walkman. Night Boat to Cairo has a lovely jingle and impossible not-to sing-along-to lyrics. I really like a song (and video) called The Sweetest Girl - anyone else?
