Hey you, don't watch that, watch this.... 1982 saw the release of the first of two Madness compilation albums called 'Complete Madness'. From Wikipedia: Complete Madness is the first greatest hits album by ska/pop group Madness. It was released in 1982 and included Madness' biggest hits from their first three studio albums and the stand-alone singles. Complete Madness spent 99 weeks on the UK charts peaking at number 1. A second compilation album 'Utter Madness' was released in 1986, not up for discussion here (that might come later).
This first Madness compilation album was so good that even George Cole did an advert for it, but which is your favourite Madness on this album? PICK TWO!Here are some, but not all of the above tracks in this week's death match: Bed & Breakfast Man
Night Boat To Cairo
One Step Beyond

Just two! You should have had an option for the whole lot, such is the quality. A top, top group who are very underrated in my opinion. Most people think of them as a singles group, but their albums are equally as good.
A quality group who have got even better with age.
For the sake of the poll, I have picked Baggy Trousers and The Prince, with BT, being the first Madness tune I heard years ago as a seven year old and fell in love with it/them from that point.

Completely bonkers would be more appropriate. Loved their early stuff in particular.
It must be love had the wonderful Labi Siffre appears in the video.
My votes, though, went to 'Night Boat...' and 'One Step...'

Like daz says, all of them are good and for me this compilation is one of the iconic albums of the late 70s and early 80s. As a kid, it was undoubtedly the video for 'Baggy Trousers' that got me into them.
As for favourites, it is tough to decide (that's why it was set at 2 only), they are all great but I opted for 'Night Boat to Cairo' and 'Bed & Breakfaat Man' as I just think these are works of art - musically, lyrically and idea wise making a hit record on these topics is quite a feat.
Baggy Trousers, One Step Beyond and Grey Day very close behind.

I like this topic but I'll have to play all the songs and then decide.

Night Boat To Cairo - my favourite track to dance to (i use the term loosely) when drink has been taken Bed & Breakfast Man - I've got this on the Madness John Peel Sessions and it's stunningly good

I never heard of any of these songs before. I only know of them from their 1983 hit that got airplay in the US: Our House. They were usually considered a one hit wonder here in the States, because it was really the only song we knew or heard from them. I do like their style, and I've recently heard one or two other songs, probably stuff after Complete Madness, that I thought was good.

Interesting that mybodyguard, as the same applies in Austria too. I have often spoken to locals my age about Madness, and the only tune that really seems to have made it big is 'Our House' which still gets airplay now. You should definitely check out this album and the next compilation 'Utter Madness' that will no doubt feature in its own death match vote some time in the future.

A very consistent group that had many great songs.
From the list, I went for 'Grey Day' and 'Shut Up', two fairly underplayed songs from 1981.

If you were only going to ever hear one Madness track, 'Our House' is as good as any. A sublime song. OK it has been played to death, but it hasn't stopped it being a great song.

Two years after this compilation, they released the superb Keep Moving album and I think this is their peak. It doesn't have a single bad song on it. My favourite song One Better Day.

'One Better Day' is possibly my favourite Madness track ever. I listened to 'Utter Madness' ... around and around on my walkman in the early 90s as I did my early evening paper round. At some point 'Utter Madness' will get the death match treatment too.

They carried on having good songs into the mid 80s, even after their top ten hits had waned.

Almost impossible to choose as there's not a duff track amongst them but I finally went for NBTC and Grey Day. Gold quality band and the only gang I wanted to join as a ten year old mini~Mod :-)

All great songs but I went for 'Baggy Trousers' as I remember dancing to it at the local youth club and 'Night Boat To Cairo'. I've still got the 'Complete Madness' album and video.

These Nutty Boys were the band of bands when I was at school, I used to get every 7” on picture disc for a few years but stupidly sold them to a market record dealer for a pittance.
Anyway, Bed and Breakfast Man is my favourite Madness tune, closely followed by Embarrassment.
However if I’m on the dance floor One Step Beyond and Night Boat To Cairo are the ones to skank to.

My First pick would be Embarrassment, just a great simple song and well put together, in fact it's written by Saxophonist Lee Thompson about his Sister having a Baby with a Black Man and his families obvious Embarrassment at the time about what was going on There is a great little video below the song about the Girl in Question ..
And does anyone know where the opening shot was filmed ?
Second Pick Tomorrow"s Just Another Day , by the time this was released they were really strong musically and lyrically and probably too in a way losing there original fan base for being too clever maybe ?! anyway still a classic for me
Cheers

Anyone interested in the group should get hold of the Book they released last year about how they got together up to the point of their initial success. A very good read.

The Madness film "Take It Or Leave It" from 1981 is a must watch for showing the band at the height of their fame and some great locations around Camden and other parts of North London.

On second thoughts, it's a Midland Bank then and now, I thought it was a Lowenbrau logo

Not sure if maps links work - but it's Camden Tube station to answer your original query. I'll try again.
