Has to be the first one - a real laugh riot. The second one is just a rehash, albeit with some funny moments.

Billy no mates this week - I prefer the second one. The writers of the first one had nothing to do with second one.

William Shatner is a welcome addition and does a good job of mocking his Captain Kirk glory days. The rest of it is very much seen it all before though.

"And don't call me Shirley".
Have to be honest and say I prefer 'Naked Gun' series.

Voted for the original as it's consistently funnier and gag after gag but 2 has one of the funniest things in either film when he pulls Ted Striker's record - "Ted Striker's 400 Polka Favourites"

Which is your favourite 'Airplane' ? I'm struggling to think of a follow-up that's as good or better than the original. Think Paul Hogan said something on those lines when he made Crocodile Dundee II. I'm paraphrasing, but went on the lines of: "To make a second film after the initial success of the original, it needs to be twice as good to match the first".

Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back are the ones most often referenced I think, but there are very few. I'm not sure how many people will agree but I think Back to the Future 3 - the wild west one - is as good as the original film. But I love them all, even 2 which did dip in quality. I suspect Hoges was just trying to deflect attention away from that Croc 2 had some funny lines but just wasn't very good.

There’s loads of films where the sequel is better in my opinion but it’s all subjective.

Bear in mind, though, that I'm not a traditional film buff, so my views are based on films I've seen, albeit relatively limited by comparison.

Which is why I didn’t pile in with a bunch of examples. I think if you’re discussing mainstream films, largely if you have a really successful film it’s hard to follow that success when it tries to be replicated or expanded on - so in that scenario you are mostly right, but with more obscure, low budgeted stuff, quite often the first film is a success then by the second, the same director gets a bigger budget and pulls off what he was trying to do first time around except he’s got more money and his/her ideas are a bit more polished. Like I said it’s completely subjective and down to personal taste though.

I found the first movie to be head and shoulders above the second, all those years ago. Probably didn't help the second one that I was outside several pints of fine ale after a pub crawl in Cambridge, but even in retrospect and having seen both movies a few times since, my opinion hasn't changed. The first one came fairly recently after the 'serious' Airport 1975, which it lampooned beautifully. The second one seemed to try too hard to be funny, and came up wanting.
