For me the 80s was all about kids TV, and I did not like my viewing getting interrupted by adverts in those short pockets of daytime kids TV that we did have, Saturday mornings with Going Live, after school with the Broom cupboard, I'd go with BBC1, but then again ITV did have plenty of quality kids TV too. Tough stuff.

Channel Four had the legendary 'The Tube'. Jools and Paula were the mainstay of the programme. And The Jam's last live TV performance...
Ah... the memories.

For the programmes featured on this site ITV wins out. Plus it wasn't dumbed down at the time. With shows like World in Action, This week, even the odd South Bank Show could be of interest. In the late 80s it was also the main player for football with Saint & Greavsie Saturday lunhtine and the Match Sunday afternoon.
For comedy BBC won out but it's split between BBC1 and BBC2 because Blackadder, not the 9 o clock news etc. was mainly BBC2. Plus BBC2 had original top gear.
Channel 4 would have introduced niche sports and better quality American shows. So if you like American football, basketball or the Tour De France you remember CH4 fondly. CH4 in particular has gone to the dogs, since the late 90s.
But you could argue that each channel in the 80s is vastly superior to the equivalent today.
The one big bright light over the last 15 years is the emergence of BBC4. That is always my go to channel now for quality entertainment and documentaries.

They were all good and had a good range of sport, comedy, films, etc.
I used to enjoy Channel 4 Friday line up of The Golden Girls, Cheers, The Cosby Show. James Whale was great too with Charlie Chuck.

ITV was certainly better in the 1980s than it is now. Minder, The Professionals, Auf Widersehen Pet et al were all there.
But today? It’s absolute rubbish. Apart from Long Lost Family (and Mrs Leek got me into that), I can’t think of any other regular shows I watch on there now - maybe the odd episode of something like The Protectors on ITV4 or Lewis on ITV3. Does that count though? Even the news seems better on the BBC today.
Channel 4 was like a breath of fresh air in the 1980s. New shows like Countdown, 15 to 1 and Treasure Hunt were great. I also recall reruns of The Avengers on Saturday nights, part of the reason I like cult TV.
Channel 4 news remains much more objective than BBC and ITV, even today. It’s just broadcast at the wrong time. And one hour’s worth of news is too much for many people to digest. It’s either because it’s too depressing or - and I hate sounding like the liberal elite - some folks just can’t handle detailed media discussion. I’d say the same about Newsnight too.
I voted for Channel 4.

I've voted for BBC2 because of its comedy output in the 1980s which I watched and enjoyed. But a lot of Channel 4 was then very good and, of course, we tend to forget that television tended to shut down at about 12.20 am before the advent of Channel 4.

I was thinking that there should be more specialist Freeview/satellite channels devoted to classic programmes from yesteryear. Like for example, they could start up a station devoted to Thames TV which could show early Bill/Sweeney/Minder episodes totally uncut and with lesser ad breaks. I suppose they could do the same for Granada, Central, LWT, Yorkshire, etc., then it would be like the good old days of regional ITV programming.

I would agree with you entirely, that would be brilliant, but the one thing that will never be achieved with cable/satellite/Freeview, unfortunately, is "episodes totally uncut and with lesser ad breaks".

I wasn't around then but I really love looking at the 80s archive of television. I prefer ITV because they had Thames TV production. I view the stuff on YouTube sometimes, it's really good. Channel 4 just started up then, so I can't say much about that. The BBC looked so rugged then to be honest.

The Young Ones was a great show in the early 80s however. The late 80s, I'm not sure what had happened.

If I went back in time to the 1980s, as a kid I would of chosen BBC1 because of Dr Who and Blake’s 7 but now I would choose ITV followed by BBC 1, Channel 4 and BBC 2 for Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy tv series which was brilliant.
All four channels were brilliant in the 1980s full of variety unlike the cr*p nowadays on television. Ironic how television was much better with four channels where now with over hundreds of channels there is just garbage except for the Minder and The Sweeney repeats on ITV4 and some good shows on Talking Pictures and Forces TV like The Equalizer.

Good call, except The Equalizer, which is awful. They should be repeating Hunter instead.

Heavens to murgatroyd and butter my butt and call it a biscuit, they should be repeating BOTH dagnabbit! Also my new favourite Spenser: For Hire where Avery Brooks blasts bad guys who deserve it, even better blasting than Rick Hunter and Robert McCall. His character Hawk and his polished 80s shooter is even bigger than Rick Hunter's magnum Arch - he is one bad ass mf, the sort of guy you'd like and the perfect bodyguard Average Joe needs for a night out in St Day.
