Lick a Smurp for Christmas, all fall down:

Always hated the Smurfs, unusually for me there aren’t any Christmas songs I have a huge dislike for, only the constant repeating of them on the radio and every shop at the time of year, my biggest problem would be with the Band Aid as can’t stand rich celebrities telling much poorer people to give money when they millions in the their banks.

I like both Renta Santa & Bionic Santa by Chris Hill (DJ)
My vote for worse is Mariah Carey, lucky we only get it played once a year BUT it starts way before Christmas arrives so maybe unlucky.

The God-awful 'Fairytale of New York' should have been on that list and voted for a hundred times! I hate that record with a passion!
Similarly, but probably unfairly, I shudder when I hear 'Stop the Cavalry', not because it's an especially bad song, but it is played so much that I'm sick of it. Which is probably true for most of the others on the voting list, with the exceptions of 'Driving Home for Christmas', 'Merry Xmas Everybody' and 'Merry Christmas Everyone', which I like despite their being overplayed. I'm not a fan of slow songs anyway, so the likes of 'Mary's Boy Child', 'When a Child is Born' and 'Lonely this Christmas' will always make me reach for the 'mute' button.
I must admit, it's been a while (if ever) that I've been to a Christmas party where they played 'There's no-one quite like Grandma'!

St. Winifred's School Choir, Renée and Renata and Cliff's Saviour's Day (keep religion out of Christmas!) for me. All vomitworthy...

Modern Christmas Classic or complete shyte?

Sia herself is good, love her somewhat rough and glassy voice. Did not know this Xmas song by her but it seems to run along her usual lines and is quite ok.

'Snowman' is a real Marmite tune. I agree with Arch, Sia's voice is just painful, particularly in the verses. However, I like the the tune, here's a few alternative versions:
I think the two Indian girls are way better than the original.

David Essex and Mud the only two songs with ZERO votes. Does this mean these are Christmas songs we actually LIKE?

They were quite good songs without a novelty element and I suggest they are much better than this thread suggests.
Both of these artists, in having their main chart success in the mid-70s, are associated with light entertainment, but really were much more than that.

I agree with Portland both are actually good songs, I think out of the list there are about three or four songs that are actually any good.

Given Shane McGowan's (of The Pogues) passing today the Christmas tune Fairytale of New York with Kirsty Mccoll was just played on the radio as a tribute and no doubt will be played even more than usual because of it but I wonder if anyone on here likes or dislikes the redone radio friendly version or the Original one with certain derogatory language replaced on it? The version played was the redone version. The link below is from 2020 about Radio 1 not playing the Original. www.BBC.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54999375

I'm with kelotoph, I absolutely hate FONY. Always have, always will. Gratingly tuneless and painful to listen to. Always makes me switch off. Although I do like Kirsty McColl, though, very much infact. I think she's wasted on FONY.
Three Xmas songs I do like a lot that are rarely played are 'Silent Night' by the Dickies, 'December Will Be Magic Again' by Kate Bush, and 'Merry Jingle' by The Greedies.

It is quite a depressing song and also not very Christmassy and reminds me of Mud's Lonely this Christmas which is not very Christmassy either although Christmas can be a depressing time for many and I suppose some people can relate to both songs lyric wise.

Lovely song. I could listen to it throughout the year.

Oh well done on the link jno, sorry. I was busy elbowing my way to a bar at the Porthleven Christmas lights turn on. Horrible it was! Packed. No pork scratchings left. Suffered the tortures of the damned I did. There was Christmas singing and everything, peasants everywhere. 😩 Proper carols are okay but Christmas songs SUCK!

Wizzard and Slade - two songs that if each was about anything but Christmas would never have been played again, yet because they are, are guaranteed playing every 12 months. Mistletoe and Wine seems too sickly, but third vote went to Wham and Last Christmas. On the flip side, Boney M - Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord is brilliant. Oh My Lord is wonderful vocals - brilliant but rarely heard...
