Interesting points daz - I often notice that certain products have periods of absence from most/all shops.
I also notice that e.g. Weetabix tends to be in either boxes of 24, 36 or 48 - i.e. you never have a choice of all three at the same time.
jno - Gutfried do the German meat-products that I like at Aldi - am I right in thinking that with the UK's precarious relationship with the EU, these may not be getting imported?

It's all interesting stuff really if you are a sad ******* like me.
Got me some secateurs from Lidl the other day and last year some walking poles - interesting to read where those products come from Daz.

Got me some secateurs from Lidl the other day and last year some walking poles - interesting to read where those products come from Daz. Most of Lidl & Aldi's special offer stuff, such as the DIY products, drills, workbenches and so on are more often than not manufactured in Germany, could very well be the componenets are produced in China, or some other sweatshop nation and sent to Germany to be finished off meaning they can be classed as 'Made in Germany'. Germany still have quite a large manufacturing base so they do still produce a lot of stuff without the reliance of sweatshop nations, but the cheaper end plastic products will mainly come from China or the like as hard to compete at their level of price, although improved manufacturing techniques and the cost of shipping from China has seen EU nations become a bit more competitive in recent years.
Doesn't matter what they sell, you can bet your life on the manufacturer being squeezed something rotten on price, but as mentioned above manufacturers would rather sell something at cost or slightly below and keep their factory producing rather than stop production if they have over produced.

From German discounter 'Netto', I wish Aldi and Lidl would stock this stuff, superb ... I'm sure it's lovely but the name "Gutfried" puts me off in an instant as it sounds like a description!

I will shop at both as they stock similar things - some are the same - but much prefer Aldi as they have a lot more.

What's the issue with the name Gutfried exactly? Good fried? It's no worse than spotted dick but I bet you know plenty of folks that like to eat spotted dick?

Aldi have started to take in a good range of pea protein Vegan Burgers, susages and sausage rolls, all very nice. We still don't shop with them as to how they treated my Son when he worked for them, but I do break rank now and again and stock up.

I was thinking more that gut = stomach and was reading it as "stomach, fried" which doesn't sound very tasty at all!
Might give it a go though next time I go to Lidl.

You gotta love Lidl ... as spotted yesterday, you can buy yourself a night vision viewer for just short of a hundred sovs. Just what you want when you're out and about in the middle of a winter's night wildlife spotting - just what you do in the middle of a big city. I did offer to buy one for thecraftyleek who said he could probably use it all day long in Norn Iron as it's dark all day there for ~6 months of the year. P.S. ok, I know it's shopping, but thread title updated as a general chat thread to post any Aldi/Lidl bargains you feel others can't live without and need a mention.

Lidl English Marmalade, made in Germany. WIGIG aisle ... when it's gone, it's gone. That middle aisle in Lidl is always a test of "how much do you REALLY need this?" Last week, I bought some Lidl sticky hooks. Great stuff, 1.49 EUR in the cheapy bin, not had one fall off yet.

In early 1993,we had an Ed supermarket open up, as there was a tesco literally two minutes walk away, a price war broke out. A few years later, EDs turned into NETTO, and a lidl opened up next to it. In the end, the lidl got revamped and bought the netto, closed it down and used it as storage space!

One thing I really hate about Aldi and Lidl is the queueing! My local Lidl yesterday, just one till open, and 4 behind me! B@stards!

How do you think they keep the costs low? I guess if you want their prices you need to accept the longer waits at the till. That said, I don't understand why they don't do all self-service tills like ASDA/Tesco etc. Unless they think all their customers will nick everything

We don;t have an Aldi but do have a Lidl. There's an Aldi in Sheerness but one moment its closing then its not. I prefer Lidl but damn them for their "Once its Gone" bit - means you have to make a decision there and then...
