There used to be a story (I'm sure I read it the TV Times back in the day) that the composer of 'Salute to Thames', Johnny Hawkesworth, used to earn 4p every time it was played. If that's true he must have had a very healthy bank account, and his estate must be doing ok.

The classic Thames ident had a lifespan of around twenty years I believe, which was longer than its comparators like ATV and LWT.
It is so engrained as part of the classic TV era that subsequent idents, whether Thames or Carlton do not resonate.

From TV TIMES 26th October 1991 when this episode was first broadcast, Leon Griffiths talks about where Arthur came from:

You’ve brought back some memories there Swainy I remember the Carlton idents I was fairly young at the time and there was a lot of excitement over Carlton getting the franchise. To begin with it was a younger and fresher feel than Thames, like most people there is only one Thames ident that sticks in my mind and it’s the river reveal that was on so much classic shows I remember KYTV spoofing these "you're watching Carlton" indents, with a serial killer and a cross dresser being the first two that spring to mind

This was indeed a very enjoyable episode and just about makes it to Excellent. My reservation is that I do find the Ray/Gloria exchanges somewhat wooden - is that just me? But the rest was classic stuff of a different slant, very well done. As many have said, Arthur alone with Mickey was great and not overdone - and nicely interrupted! We knew Barrel was going to get his comeuppance - and I guess he was a bit too obviously nasty - but it was nicely done. And the Gabadini family were a lovely addition too. Overall a well plotted, well paced episode making the most of old and new faces. Thumbs up.

Initially I didnt like this one, Barrel was just too sleazy he made me want to take a shower, and he had none of the humour which previous villans in the show had. however the episode was saved with the cumuppance he got at the end in the hands of the Italian boys. so I rated it a 4 , when I really thought it would be a 3
