John Moffat was indeed a great villain in this episode who should have had a return match with Arthur and Terry! I do recall seeing Debbie's antics in the pub where she meets Arthur being considerably shortened when I saw it on ITV4 a few years back compared to the uncut DVDs! JB

I did think this was very good, especially after "Rembrandt..." which I wasn't too keen on. I was reassured seeing that it was a Tony Hoare script. Got to agree with the majority about John Moffat being menacing as Freddie. Patrick Malahide is credited on the opening titles for the first time in his sixth appearance and shows what an asset to the series he was. On the other hand, it's sad to see Diana Malin making her final appearance. At least we get to see her bum again. Great line from Chisholm to Arthur "You've got more rabbit than Watership Down". Then his face when he sees all those jackets at The Winchester. Outstanding. Agreed, so was very endearing.

Probably just me but is Arthur saying "Stand on me" in season 3 more than others?
Mad Mickey's sprung himself from Chelmford nick and Chisholm's not best pleased.
I don't mind, this is one I ain't seen before.

Probsbly just me but is Arthur saying "Stand on me" in season 3 more than others? I've never really noticed tbh. Possibly something GC was putting in himself or maybe a particular writer liked using this phrase.

Just watched this, having taped it on ITV4 earlier, an excellent episode. It shows again for me anyway what a good character Jones was, don't think anyone could have done the part as good as Michael Povey.
Even when he doesn't say any lines it's just his facial expressions that convey so much. A great foil for Chisholm.

I gave it a right GOOD ranking. Same as 11 others. S3 E5 should follow today so I'll give that a watch. Overall, I'm not sure I've seen too much Minder in my life. Sometimes when it's on you can think, yeah I know this one but there's been ten series at least and there's a lot of titles I don't recognise. The Minder episode that I have seen the most on tv is the one with Shamy in, that one where he has an idea to make movies back in India - if that comes on I'd turn it off becuase I've seen it too many times.

Loved the running gag with the jackets and also the way Terry and Arthur have vanished when we cut back to the bar and Debbie is still sitting there nonchalantly sipping her drink!
I didn't think Freddie was menacing at all, I thought he came across as a bit of an idiot.

I'm sure there's another snippet that has been cut. Anyone else remember this?. I'm positive that on the original airing and early repeats, when Debbie invites Mickey into her bed, we see her from Mickeys point of view lifting the bed sheets up to reveal her fine assets.

Bill Nighy only appearance in Minder. He's well known in movies nowadays. Another actor who appeared in Minder before his career had really taken off as he plays a lot of hip characters in uniform or authority. He plays the Chief Inspector in Hot Fuzz for example, I thought this scene was funny. I thought I recognised him as they placed him in the thumbnail: Someone else has taken the snapshot. The website domain watermarked on this image has disappeared, now leads to a hosts who used to run the website: Someone must have really been a fan and went to watch Minder to see him there.

Very enjoyable episode. Something of a re-hash of 'the Old school tie' plot-wise, but much better. Its almost as if Tony Hoare saw TOST and thought he could do it better - and he did.
Lots to admire here - Chisholm & Jones second outing together, and already the partnership is bearing fruit; they play off each other so well.
Freddie Baker was a great villain, all cold-eyed menace and gave the impression he'd never smiled in his life, but good to his mother (aren't they all?). I'm not familiar with the actor (John Moffatt) but thought he gave a superb performance. Back story as a boxing promoter I would have like to have learnt more about, especially as he reminded me of the top promoter of the day, Mickey Duff (was the character based on him i wonder?)
A young Bill Nighy (early 30s, but looking much younger) was great as the hack, an early outing for him - almost unknown at this point - but they gave him one of my favourite lines in the episode, when asked by his editor what sort of character they're dealing with in Arthur - "Bit of a dicey credit history, but then what do you expect from a bloke who goes by the name of 'call me Arthur'?"
Then you have the side-story of the jackets, another appearance from the lovely Debbie, her largest Minder role (ironic, as its her last) and Chisholm getting the last word.
Great stuff all round!

Freddie Baker - is he arguably Minder's worst villainous?
Arthur points to Baker being involved in boxing management in the past but a little more information on his activities would have been good. The way Arthur, Debbie and Dave try to warn Terry off Baker, makes it sound like he's a real nasty, violent piece of work but I didn't find him very convincing. Also very strange that he looked somewhat older than his own Mother!
They were both born in 1922!

Mickey’s face when Deb gives him the go ahead to climb in to bed with her....😂 I'm convinced that the original airing of this episode showed Debbie lifting the bedsheets to reveal all her glory when she offered Mickey into bed but I've not seen it since. Although Terry treats Debbie as a bit of casual in the series, I always get the feeling that he wasn't best pleased to see Mickey in her bed. His reaction always leads me to think he disapproves.

Arthur using the video equipment to record Micky’s recorded message for the press was a great scene. They will give you a “royal pardon once they see this” or words to that effect.
I would imagine back in the day there would have been little left out of that £500 advance by the time he had hired that lot and recorded the message onto the video tape.

Another really good episode. Love the running gag with the jackets and Chisholm having the last word for a change. Nice to see Debbie back again, I bet the censors had their work cut out. It would have been good to see Terry give Freddie Baker a dig at the end of the episode. 4.5 out of 5.

Mixed views on this one.
Mickey's escape = far to easy for a violent inmate to just wander off in the middle a cross country run. I've got no form but that seems highly implausible to me.
And Micky needed a bit more of an edge. He may have been a loveable idiot but he didn't seem angry enough or display any of the short fuse that was frequently cited as the reason his five-stretch ended up being twenty. He just didn't stack up as a character.
I'm afraid John Moffatt didn't convince me as Freddie Baker either. Physically he just looked like a weedy guy with a silly hair do. I could have him in a fight no trouble! Yes he was a bit sinister, but for all the wrong reasons. Creepy single middle aged bloke still living with his mum? That's the sort of individual I'd tell my nine year old to steer well clear of.
As someone observed earlier, the concept for the character seems a bit too similar to the Krays to be coincidence. A very good idea, but needed a more intimidating actor.
On the up-side Chisholm is brilliant in this episode. The scene where him and Jones make a half hearted attempt to track down Mickey at the block of flats and end up in the middle of a violent domestic between a West Indian couple is outstanding from start to finish.
Another brilliant Arthur moment is when Terry takes him outside the Winchester to spill the beans and Arthur says "I'm not a prison sort of person. I wouldn't like it. I would suffer considerable mental stress!". Terry says "You wouldn't say that if there was a few bob involved would you?" Arthur replies indignantly "That is a gross assessment of my generous character Terence. I am a practical and realistic man, that's all". Then quickly adds "Do you think there could be an earner in it?".
The way his whole attitude changes when he senses an opportunity that could be exploited is perfect.
A really good story and some magic moments, but the two main guest stars just didn't fit their parts in my opinion.
Oh yeah and Arthur in the Winchester giving Terry a lecture on health and fitness with a VAT in one hand and a cigar on the other. "Your body is a temple...cough-splutter..." Wonderful stuff.

This is a great episode, best of S3 so far by miles. Great storyline, plenty of gags and the sports jackets thread is a Minder classic.

Watched yesterday and a very enjoyable episode. Debbies strip routine was very good.
I don't think Baker would have left things as the were at the final scenes, he looked a right evil bar steward, something very sinister about him.
