Ah thats more like it, best Ray episode by far. I was the one who quit early into the Ray series when it first came out, actually feel guilty now, how weird. It certainly whets the appetite for series 9 and 10 100% - best Ray era episode for me as well.

Very comical episode. I thought the American tourists were good value for money I laughed out loud with the quip “We just thought you were an old crook with a broken down bus” If you stared at that bus long enough it would probably fall apart in front of your eyes!

Very good one....Arthur ripping Rambo off was quality as was his claim to be involved in high level undercover work to help Morley out. The introduction of Rambo is good too - you hear Arthur calling for him at the poolside and see a muscular tattooed bloke swimming, before Rambo appears in the scene and it then becomes apparent his nickname is one of irony, classic...

Was surprised to see GW actually driving the bus on public roads. He seemed to handle it quite well so full marks to him but i wonder about the legality of it?

Was the coach actually on a low loader trailer? Haven't seen it recently baz so can't really recall. If he was really driving then maybe they closed the roads for filming, or had an instructor out of shot. Health and safety weren't two words that existed together back then. So fair dues if he actually did it.

I was wondering if it has anything to do with the old PSV licence as opposed to todays PCV? As far as I remember, pre '96(?) you could drive coaches and buses on a car licence as long as you were eighteen or over and you weren't carrying fare paying passengers.

In recent years then of course it all became standardised throughout Europe, categories, exceptions etc. It was a quirk of the licencing system really. You needed a PSV to drive say a small bus with 20 passengers if they were paying for the privilege but you could drive a double decker with non paying passengers on a car licence. The change to PCV, passenger carrying rather than PSV, public service, made more sense and meant that a separate test was required if you wanted to carry more than 12(?) passengers.

Something that's bothered me about this episode is why Plod would be flogging off an H-reg bus as some old knackered thing. H was 1991, so it would have been almost new when the episode was made. A search on the DVLA site confirms it's a fake plate and it certainly looks anything but new. I'm not bad with cars but I know next to nothing about buses. And there's not a lot of information out there on non-public service buses like this one, where the doors are down the side so as not to disturb the driver rather than at the front to make you pass him/her to pay your fare. But it seems it's a Bedford VAS5 CF29F ie. it can carry 29 passengers, like this one thetransportlibrary.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=143130. There are all sorts of different body shells and shapes for this chassis but this one is very specific and dates from 1977 so I reckon the original reg would have been an S or a T at the latest, which would actually make it a 14-year old bus. Why they changed the reg to a fake new plate is a mystery.

This is indeed an Excellent episode as many have already said. A couple of plots that nicely link with some great performances. Credibility is stretched to almost - but only almost - breaking point, but that's what we like, innit? Particularly how Arthur is going to get out of shtook with Denny - but that is played nicely, with Denny having his eye on Ray plus some grudging respect for family loyalty. And Arthur as (presumably) Special Branch with the Plod auditors - again if played well enough people will not challenge what they think are figures of authority - and Arthur can of course do premier quality bull when needed. Morley again does his baffled stance so well - in fact most of the time. The plot of a young upstart fiddling a land deal is a well-worn path so you have to do it properly with a crusty old major - as indeed they did - spot on. Ray is getting less female action than Terry to date but he's trying. And the tour - boy oh boy - from Ray's cousin living in the flat to the ruck in the Winchester - really outstanding. And so many little things - like the introduction of Rambo. I suppose the episode could have ended up disjointed but it flowed excellently and ended well with both Arthur and Ray deciding a drink was the preferred option after their respective knockbacks. A nice way to end Ray's first season (I know there's the Christmas one), even if there were some wobbles on the way. Was it the best one of the series........I'm still thinking on that......but then I don't have to have a favourite, do I?

Totally agree with @jno - this could have been Terry and Arthur, and it could have been 1985. And I think that's a real compliment to the cast, writer and production team.
I don't recall the writer of this episode, Kevin Clark, being a regular Minder writer, but I could certainly be wrong. I was surprised, as I thought it must have been a 'Yallop', it was so good.
