Well, I finished watching it last night. I thought it was brilliant. A great snapshot of Thatcher's Britain seen through the eyes of some teenagers living in London. The pq isn't that good and there has been zero restoration. A shame.
The cast are all really good especially the two lead males (Mark Farmer and Ian Sears). I loved the theme tune (by Gary Shail with possibly some help from Mark Farmer). It was great to see the likes of Kathy Burke, Joe McGann and Kevin "Tosh Lines" Lloyd pop up in early roles.
Honestas non est optimum consilium est: consilium non solum est.
I watched the first three episodes of the series last night as picked up the DVD from Network sale last year and found it excellent viewing.
The BBC would never make anything like this nowadays, but it gave a good idea of how things were for most people from the late 70s throughout the 80s. A lot of the fashions and decor I remembered, especially the wallpaper in Johnny's house, which would have been the same as ours at the time. There were a few bloopers the one I remember most was the reference to Baggy Trousers when they were outside the pub on their bike in the second episode, set before the single would have been released, but a few other instances as well, but just nit picking in an otherwise superb series.
The racial element is something we wouldn't have been aware of up here at the time as people from an ethnic background were few and far between, in all my time at school I remember two Nigerian and one Pakistani kid and they didn't stick around long, their parents were training at the hospital and were only with us for months, a year tops. Imagine trainee doctors living on a Council estate in a very poor area of town, just wouldn't happen now.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of these episodes.
Got the last one watched last night and finished a very interesting series and one I am glad I purchased.
Just so much going for it, it was a pity they didn't manage to follow up the story at a later time as would have been interesting to see what had happened to Johnny. I thought what made this series work so well was great supporting characters and so much faces appearing throughout made this series an excellent choice.
Has anyone got any idea where the estate they filmed at was/is?
