At the start of this one Arthur & Ray are at the dogs, with Arthur sporting a very colourful car salesman's tie. When a discussion about the lack of car sales on the lot comes up, Ray makes the off the cuff remark about Arthur being "better off if he hired them out".
Arthur realises this is quite a good idea and decides to hire out the cars on the lot together with an idea of a Happy Hour to rustle up some trade at the Winchester and a car boot sale. Ray enlists the help of his friend Winston to help deliver, who Arthur is a little bit shocked to learn is black (there are some mild racist remarks made by Arthur) who makes a series of mistakes that get on Arthur's nerves.
This one is quite memorable as the one where Arthur's motor is driven at top speed all around the country by a joyrider. Meanwhile Arthur goes to see his insurance broker in a pet shop to sort it out and Ray and Winston are out birding it.
There is lots going on in this one and Morley has quite a lot of screen time and this is definitely one of his best episodes as he goes after Arthur's problematic cars. Arthur & Ray have a major falling out in this one as Ray finally gets to the end of his tether with Ray. There is a nice little punch up at the end. A few anorak points - watch carefully as Arthur & Ray leave the dog track through the entrance walking in front of them is the same extra who plays Micky Carnes, the fifth backhander in 9.6 'Gone With The Winchester'. The only clue as to a filming date is Morley's tax disc, dated 31 August 1992. Also a slight blooper at the end - as Arthur & Ray walk into the Winchester Club and Arthur says "you'll make a fortune" out of this", keep your eye on the ubiquitous blonde extra at the bar (who was also just at the car boot sale) - one minute Arthur pushes past her and as Dave replies she is right next to the bar again, then is right behind Arthur again!
Some top lines...
from Arthur: Second class motoring is better than first class walking. You will come to realise that Mr Morley has been nominated for the first brain transplant operation. If this was wartime I could have you taken out and shot.
from Ray: I work all the hours that god give me and for what, eh? Third world wages and first class cr*p.
All in all, an excellent episode from series 9 and one of my favourite Ray episodes!
9/10

Like the customer who "always gets his motors from Arthur". Wonder how many that has added up to?

One of the best Morley eps I think for me....love his growing frustration as he realises Arthur's clunkers are clogging up London

A good episode once again with lots going on, blink and you could miss something. Good characters, decent story and some cracking one liners made this a very enjoyable episode.

As mentioned on the main sites episode review and info, Arthur's bright coloured tie with pictures of bright coloured cars, which he wears at hackney dog track appears in no other episode of MINDER.
Just like the cream trilby hat he wears in MINDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and A LITTLE BIT OF GIVE AND TAKE, the tie seems oddly out of place. I know Arthurs dress sense could be a bit miss matched at times, but i really can't see Arthur wearing a tie like this,as his normal tastes seem to conservative.
Was this tie some kind of in joke? Does anyone have any thought or ideas on this subject?

Was this tie some kind of in joke? Does anyone have any thought or ideas on this subject? I totally agree with this yoyo - this tie almost seems like some sort of snazzy fashion statement dropped in for some reason. The cars on it must have something to do with car dealer but it just isn't Arthur's usual clobber. An in-joke for a day out at the races perhaps?

I guess it is something to do with the car trade too, but just seems to "modern" for Arthur, and just does not seem to fit in with his image. I wore a bright tacky tie for my avatar picture as a tribute to it.

No recollection of ever seeing this before. Run of the mill episode in my opinion. Probably watch it again in a couple of years times and have no recollection of ever seeing it.

I like this one, plenty going on. A nice touch when the two previously antagonistic customers join forces to have a go at Arthur at the car boot sale. Linda and Sarah - what a pair of sorts!

I never liked the punch up at the end of this one, seems very rushed and Morley & Field turn up way too quickly. Some great lines though, often used used ‘second class driving is better than first class walking’ myself.

I never liked the punch up at the end of this one, seems very rushed and Morley & Field turn up way too quickly. I think that might be down to it being a more mainstream show than in the early Waterman days. There was definitely a conscious decision to tone down the sex and swearing in the latter Terry episodes, probably the violence as well?
Even the brutal scrap between Ray and Alexie in Opportunity Knocks and Bruises is over pretty quick and the worst of it is suggested rather than shown.

To be honest I think my disliking for that scene is the bloke being thrown out of window. Just seemed over the top. I know it was done for the joke of the taxi driver speeding off & Arthur attempting to karate chop him after but it just seemed silly.

Decent one this, watched it last night for the first time in...well probably since it was first broadcast. The footage of Hackney Dog Track brings back memories of a bygone era , that area is now virtually adjacent to The Olympic Stadium. One trick I think that was missed is at the very end where Arthur’s Daimler is returned, had Morley and Park been present it would have left them in the embarrassing position of having to nick the driver , which Morley, complete with his vendetta against AD would have hated. Potential blooper too...when Ray knocks on Linda’s door it is clearly No 42, as confirmed in the pictures on the locations. However when the punchup happens at the end, the call over the radio, and Arthur’s instruction to the taxi driver are to get to No 31....

Agreed - Watched this episode this morning on ITV 4. Was enjoyable enough but feels a bit flat compared to the DW era. Shows how times changed in the 90s.

Another solid watchable episode...going through these first couple of Ray seasons...as aside is they have a very strong early 1990s/ very late 1980s feel...from the incidental music to the fashions....I'm digressing but you just don't get that in the present day...2022 doesn't really feel any different to 2016..
Anyway back to the episode its not a stand out but very watchable...Winston was played well ..understated...wheras Im finding a lot in s9 that some of the one off characters are trying a bit too hard to be larger than life eg Art Attack, or the parking ticket forger whose name escapes me G
I don't think Arthurs racist in any way....when he says "he's black' ..he just comments on Winston being black in a matter of fact way that an old duffer of the time might in suprise not in malice... he gives Winston a job, goes out of his way to save/clear him from Morley 's clutches..( incidentally Morley came off as quite unnecesarily unpleasent in this episode - maybe slightly poor writing as he's certainly not a wrong 'un) calls Winston his lad,and generally just treats him and Ray alike as two young fellas chasing skirt and doing Arthur's running around while he does the entrepreunereal thinking!
Of course in this day and age it wouldnt be allowed on TV there'd be nonsense about racism but I could imagine Arthur showing the same suprise if Winston was French ...6 out of 10 for me

I liked this, the Winston character, the dodgy ladies and Arthur's latest scheme, plus some cracking one liners as already pointed out by jno - brain transplant and wartime I'd have you shot. But as a few have hinted, it felt way too rushed. There is some joy to be had in doing things at just the right pace and often (for me at least) this was not the case here. It seems we just had to get through the story line. So it wobbles between Excellent and Average which I guess makes it a Good.
