Link to episode on minder.org: www.minder.org/episodeguide/S05E09_AroundTheCorner.htm I absolutely love this episode - lots going on with Arthur getting seriously conned by Tasty and his team of misfits Ted & Fred. It's truly great stuff seeing Chisholm vs Rycott throughout this one and they really do make an excellent plot throughout. Loads of great lines in this one, all of which had me giggling: - Rycott
Daley & McCann as are good as, holding hands on the exercise yard in the scrubs!
- Chisholm
My name is Albert!
- Fred
Sorry about that Arthur, Ted's as good as gold really but he can get a bit violent if he thinks people are taking liberties. Funny you wouldn't think to look at him but he murdered a geezer once. Yeah, but he had a result, got it reduced to manslaughter. Only ended up getting a five. Just to keep him happy, if you wanna just let me check the doe?
- Tasty
Listen Arfur, you don't mind if I slip do ya? I'll weigh in with my bit now and I'll call around and pick up my stuff tomorrow.
- Chisholm to Jones
i) Frankly Jones I am getting a bit tired of your ineptitude! Jones: Me? What have I done? ii) I hope you're not going to use that as an excuse for being 4 hours late on duty.
- Arthur to Dave
Your positive pessimism is a constant source of comfort to me!
Seeing Taff on his own drowning his sorrows in The Winchester is classic too and I love it when Dave tells Taff "I am well known for my discretion". Jones seems to fit in to the Winchester quite well in this episode and it is clear he is at ease with Terry & Arthur more than he is with his own guvnor Chisholm!
Some excellent reading to be done on this episode here: yeoldecybershoppe.com/malahide/minder/analysis-scene-xiv-minder-around-corner/
...and here is a blooper to watch out for next time you look at this one - boom boom! Big thanks to decker for this one!

One of my favourite Minder locations in this one. The private/illegal drinking club above the row of shops where Fred and Ted hang out. This is typical of the kind of dodgy place you'd find a few 'likely lads' I always think. I've always wondered if this was an authentic venue or a made up location to suit the script.

'Speiler' is a great word. Thanks VAT but I'd still love to know if this was a 'real life' drinking den or not.

'Speiler' is a great word. Thanks VAT but I'd still love to know if this was a 'real life' drinking den or not. Spieler ("i" before "e" in correct spelling but I notice the script gets it wrong and I also get it wrong regularly!) is of course from the German "spielen" which means "to play". "der Spieler" is anything from this list: dict.leo.org/deutsch-englisch/spieler.html
I must say I haven't heard it much in English to be honest but just checked my Oxford English Dictionary and it is in there as a gambling club. Clearly I don't spend enough time in the spieler then!

Another aspect of this episode that I like is the fact that there's an actual scam going on.
Rather than losing money through a bad investment or someone merely not paying up, Arthur is the victim of a 'con trick' which we don't see very often.

Just watched this episode fo the very first time, wasn't even aware of its existence until I saw a snippet on ITV4 one morning before I went to work then couldn't find it in my box set, until I was kindly pointed tolook up the extras disc, where it duly was.
Anyway, a very good episode in my opinion. Rycott and Chisholm were brilliant as usual and a couple of great performaces by Colin Farrell as Tasty and Brian Capron as Fred.
Best scenes for me was Arthur and Terry trying to get the dog to run, comedy gold

CHEERFUL CHARLIE ..he he he ...HIS NAME'S ALBERT as we were told by Taff! Oh no, he is Arfur's greatest supporter and always there to keep an eye on Poetic,Justice Innit and he searches in churches... which our dear Taff would NEVER EVER do !!!! ..because he made up his mind!

I thought I was going to watch this episode only to discover it is missing from my Region 1 DvD set of Series Five! Arrrrrgggggh!! Gordon Bennett!! The aggro I'm feeling right now! At least it's not listed as being part of the set. I didn't notice its not listed on the back cover with the other episodes! I wonder why? The set does include The Christmas Bonus and Minder on the Orient Express. Very strange! I shall have to send my minder 'round to give someone a proper spanking! I need a VAT and I don't even drink! It's a good thing I'm typing this. I'd hate to think what Cockney Rhyming slang would sound like with an American accent!

This episode is one of the best Minder episodes ever pr1. I really can't believe for a second why anyone would want to omit this from the US DVD set - utter idiocy. Fred & Ted are two candidates for the dodgiest traders on the manor, alongside perhaps Bill & Ben. This episode is a must-see Minder and definitely for me one of the top ten for storyline/humour all wrapped up in a perfect Minderesque package.

I can't image why it was left off the set. Why couldn't they have done it to one of the weaker Series Five episodes? The set is eight episodes on two discs. The third disc is for Christmas Bonus and Minder on the Orient Express. I'm happy to have the extras but I would have prefered a complete set of Series 5 and maybe skip Christmas bonus. It seems like the company that released the set was determined that the total running time of the set could not exceed a certain length. It is very odd.
Knowing its a great episode makes the situation more aggrevating.

I agree with jno. This is one of the best Minder episodes, definitely in the top ten best episodes for me. Some great characters in Tasty Tim and Fred & Ted, some rivalry between Chisholm and Rycott (a shame we didn't see more episodes featuring both of them) and lots of great dialogue. You must see this episode pr1!

You should meet one of my German mates, he tries to imitate my accent, by dropping his T's and H's and trying to talk in rhyming slang and it just does not sound right! When he says "going out "it sounds more like going OWL and "water sounds like war-er"

I finally got to see this today and I triple every positive comment already made! This episode is brilliant and one of the best! An instant favorite and one I know I will enjoy watching again. Fifty minutes of pure entertainment and joy!
When Chisholm is at his desk reading the paper there is a headline mentioning the Sweeney.
The scenes with Terry and Arrhur trying to get the dog to run are hilarious even by the high standards of Minder. Just thinking about the rigged up bike and stuffed bunny makes me smile.

I wholeheartedly concur! The car crash scene is Minder Gold in my opinion and for me one of the most memorable moments of the 1980s, not just in Minder. Tasty Tim is well dodgy and this a clear example of the old bill having their own little story which really works. Colin Farrell (Tasty) is back in a later episode as another character in this: www.minder.org/episodeguide/S09E07_HowToSucceedInBusinessWithoutReallyRetiring.htmand there is another 'Tasty Tim' character in the comeback Minder, which I will assume was purely unintentional: www.minder.org/episodeguide/S11E03_TheArtOfTheMatter.htm

I enjoyed this episode so much I may have to watch it again soon.
I forgot to mention how great Arthur's reaction is at the end is when he is told about the dog. Another in the long line of priceless Minder moments brought to us by the brilliance of George Cole.

Nooooo!!! It's not on my box-set! It's not been posted online AND it doesn't appear to be on the Series Five box-set either (assuming I wanna cough 15 sovs for 3 discs, when I only paid thirty sheets for the 20-disc Waterman box)! Am I ever gonna see this episode? Knowing it's a classic makes it worse! Nnnngh! Oh well - on to Series Six...

It is also missing from the individual set for series five in that area. It makes no sense.

Top notch. Didn't I see this on ITV4 a few years ago? Loads to commend here, like the scenes with DD the dog - Arthur: "Kill! Kill!" Terry: "He's still ready". and "Go on! Stick.......![pause] I'll go". When Tasty and his mates (including Grange Hill's Mr Lewis) show Arthur the VCR, the box - loaded from the shop - says JVC on the side, but the instruction book says Hitachi. Blooper or part of the con? There are also shades of Monty Python's 'Parrot Sketch' when Arthur confronts the dog's former owner. "This animal, that you have foisted on me, will not run. It's immobile. This is a stationary dog". And a great line from Arthur - "Hit him Terry. Hit him - several times, all over the place". Rycott & Chisholm's quibbling over their 'snout' is priceless - not to mention the stake-out car-crash - and Jones appearing in the Winchester in the complicit closing scene is an unexpected bonus. This episode is surely one of the best in the whole run - it's remarkable how leisurely the pace is and yet they manage to cram so much in. I had to keep checking the DVD timer to make sure it wasn't a feature-length episode as it was so well-paced and engaging. Even Dave's 'Drive carefully' to Arthur is strangely touching. I love this episode and would be very surprised if they ever made a better one. THIS is the one I'd show to anyone who'd never seen Minder before. A big thanks to EVERYONE involved - this is TV to treasure.
