This is one that's very tough to take. When I saw the name in the obituary section my reaction was expletive filled...
Great in so many things. The Comic Strip Presents..., Tutti Frutti, Cracker, Goldeneye, Blackadder, Alfresco... The list goes on. Of course the news reports will concentrate on Harry blinking Potter, but I guess that's inevitable.
Massively talented and gone too soon. RIP.

I think one of the first things I saw him do was Mason Boyne, as a left-footer of Irish extraction it had me in stitches. The one eyed pirate radio DJ actually in the Young Ones' radio was another that made me laugh, "We're scuppered!". So versatile though.
RIP Big Man

RIP Robbie. A fine actor. His complete Scottishness struck a chord with me.

Terrible news. I remember him from the early days of Channel 4 and of course, The Young Ones, when he appeared as a bouncer preventing Rik from getting into his own bedroom ("What have you done? Turned it into a roller disco or something?" ) as well as a doctor examining a chocolate eclair and the aforementioned Captain Blood. Whenever I think of him, I either think of him as Fitz in Cracker or in this scene from Supergrass, when film crew attitudes to health and safety were more laissez-fare than they would be now: RIP.

Cracker seems a long time ago now but watched them all with great attention in those days. As everyone says thoough he was in so much. Very sad.

Very shocked to hear this, he seemed one of those indestructible robust people that would go on forever. The Met should have been hunting him for stealing that scene in What Makes Shamy Run. I recall he did a series about 7/8 years ago driving the length of the country in a classic car. Excellent. RIP Big Man. Robbie Coltrane – a life in pictures | Culture | The Guardian

Did not expect this awful news. He was such a distinctive looking, larger than life presence in films and tv he could hardly be missed and was instantly recognisable, no matter how small his bit part in his earlier productions. A genuine household name and talent.
RIP Robbie.

Tutti Frutti was one of my favourite series as a teenager, and of course I enjoyed his performance as Samuel Johnson in Blackadder III and I’d forgotten he was in the Christmas Carol episode too. Never seen any Cracker or Harry Potter so all those references in the media are lost on me. RIP

RIP Robbie Coltrane. He was great as Fitz on Cracker which was a brilliant nail biting drama series. He also starred alongside the late Bob Hoskins in Mona Lisa. On one of his comedy shows in the late 1980s he did a St Trinians spoof where he played a brilliant impersonation of Miss Fritton.

That scene from Supergrass was immediately the one that came to mind as his stand out scene. That must have taken some nerve, the waves hitting him side on look pretty bloody powerful. He doesn't even flinch though.

He doesn't even flinch though. Yeah, it’s a fabulous scene. Had some actor done that in some “revered” production and not just in a comic strip presents comedy film people would be gushing over it worse than those waves on the breaker.

Was a real shame to read that one, but he has been ill for a number of years now.
His best role for me was as Danny McGlone in the excellent Tutti Frutti, but he was always good in whatever he appeared in from major roles to cameos.
RIP Robbie

I remember him in a 1988 ITV T.v movie called THE FRUIT MACHINE, where he played a character named Annabelle, who was a transvestite owner of a gay night club!

In his early days he often appeared with the 'Comic Strip' actors in their various projects, though he was to that genre what David Bowie was to 'glam rock' - a part of it, but much, much more as well.
R.I.P. Robbie Coltrane.

RIP Robbie. I was just watching the film Mona Lisa the other day. He took a good movie in that film.
I'm a bit surprised he went at aged 73. A stocky guy like him doesn't live until that age. Just shows he really was the tough able to handle himself guy that you see in the camera, that offers good advice to the lead characters.

RIP Robbie. I was just watching the film Mona Lisa the other day. He took a good movie in that film. When Bob Hoskins is watching you know what on tv* and Robbie's character says "Channel 4, is it?" to him still cracks me up and it made a lot of people laugh in the cinema too. Strange this forum does not allow that word beginning with a P and ending with an N.

I was watching Nuns On The Run tonight, I just happened to catch some on tv. Not a very popular film with critics or cinema goers at the time ,but I actually quite like it and will watch it if it’s on tv. On my YouTube feed Coltrane’s documentary series he done for channel4 comes up. very interesting Coltrane’s planes and automobiles his eagerness and interest really comes through.
