A nice contempory style episode of Minder. My new favourite episode because it features Old Wembley Stadium. I clicked on the idea in the storyline that how fans had to purchase tickets via mail order because of Scotland. This was because in 1977, Scotland invaded the pitch at Old Wembley and snapped the crossbars and ruined the turf after the 2-1 win against England. So Scotland has been tagged ever since for their style of celebration ever since but the idea they had to sell ticket via mail order, I don't know if that is true but it does fuse a good premise to make the story work in this episode and include a bit of history of Old Wembley. Here's the photo I got from the daily mail showing the situation at Old Wembley showing that this happened. I'm sure many here knew this. Source: www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3927302/Recalling-iconic-moment-Scotland-fans-stormed-Wembley-pitch-snapped-crossbar-stunning-England-1977.htmlHe was a good actor for the part. Tragic he died so young. Yeah! What a shame! I remember it well. It was shown live on television. The Home Internationals were among the limited amount of football that were shown live in those days and the cameras lingered on the Scottish fans as they wrecked the place after the final whistle.

It's just a pity Arthur and Terry never made it to North of the Border though in the episode.

The Home Internationals were among the limited amount of football that were shown live in those days and the cameras lingered on the Scottish fans as they wrecked the place after the final whistle. Yeah, I thought it really caught on quickly back then as it happened, it may have inspired the story line in this episode. I've read about it on a book about Old Wembley about what had happened also. Must have costed the stadium to get the pitch repaired and the post replaced. I remember it well. It was shown live on television. The Home Internationals were among the limited amount of football that were shown live in those days and the cameras lingered on the Scottish fans as they wrecked the place after the final whistle. Really? Wow, I suppose he really helpped make history there. Yeah I thought it was a let down that Arthur and Terry never made it to the border also but it was good to see them out onto the road at some service station somewhere for the story to continue. Those motorways and service stations back then looked really street and diesel inspired back then.

Particularly fond of Justin's mum in this one; proper working class bird, was she ever in the Sweeney?
Helen Keating was in three episodes of The Sweeney although only credited for the one! Messenger of The Gods! Technically it's two but she was the busty woman in Armchair Theatre's Regan as well! JB

I think this is my second favorite of series 5, after Goodbye Sailor. The road trip to Scotland in the Chevy van is priceless. Lots of lighting fast dialogue. Justin looks like the lead singer of New Order.

Even I had trouble identifying the American car driven by Cedric - It had a Chrysler pentagon on the boot lid , but what the model was , I hadn't a clue - The number plate had an X suffix but was probably imported before age related plates came in , it looked more mid 70s to me - from the Starsky & Hutch era ! Watching this tonight, I had to have a look to try and identify the Chrysler model. I think it's a 1981-1983 Imperial, a 2 door coupe, to rival a Lincoln Continental coupe of the time and big enough in the back for a snug business meeting while George Formby performs in the background. It actually looked nicely lined and trimmed in the back, not tasteless and over the top like some land yachts from Detroit. There was even a Frank Sinatra edition of the Imperial. In blue of course to match ole blue eyes. Well what else would the king of the touts be seen in at the time. Junkyard Frank Sinatra Edition 1981 Imperial

On second viewing of the trip up the M1, it's a downgrade for Phil. From the same J platform family as the Chrysler Imperial, but not quite as prestigious, he actually has a Dodge Mirada here. Dodge Mirada

This is a great episode but by the end I think it just fails to deliver on the spark that it promises throughout. The conclusion is ok but I've always thought it could have done a better job resolving the excellent build up. Alternatively, a Scottish firm could have appeared while Terry was scrapping with Cedric Saw this last night, definitely one of the best Middle Years episodes, a real classic, certainly for football fans. Have to agree with you above, jno..the ending could have been worse, but not by much. The idea of a Scottish firm showing up has particular appeal. They were rather misrepresented I felt in the long run...just Alisdair, and that drunk fellow. Liked the van, and great line from Justin, calling it the Shagwagon. Really love the scene in the pub, and all of Tel's gardening references, peeved at Arthur. Though I have to say, I was a tad confused with the Inland Revenue thing. Mainly, if Terry had avoided their long reach for 7 years, what changed now, that they gave him a pull? Really great build up this episode has, perhaps could have done with being an extra length special. Syrup is a Minder legend Might as well say it here..agreed, despite this not being Syrup's ep Particularly fond of Justin's mum in this one; proper working class bird, was she ever in the Sweeney? Now that you mention it, I do recall her from another role she had, in an episode or two of The Chinese Detective, another great show, which as it happens also had Derek Martin in it's main cast.

I remember that England v Scotland game, was 10 at the time but the pitch invasion stuck in my mind ever since.

Sensitive ITV4 edits update - The quilt with which Derek Martin's character threatens to smother Justin is no longer "poofy". The scene remains but the audio has been edited. "I'm gonna smother you with your quilt" I recorded this episode overnight recently from ITV4, and watched it back yesterday and the 'poofy quilt' line was included, so maybe it's just been removed from the daytime showings.

Agree with everything said here... Could have had a better ending but the dialogue between characters was fantastic banter.
Also the loss of Mark Farmer so young was tragic although I believe he gave up acting not long after Minder, great actor who really carried the part of Justin(e) really well.
Also loved the shots of old Wembley.. What a loss this place is now I think.

Yes, he's excellent in this. In fact I'd go as far as to say that, even though George Cole is on top form as Arthur in this, Mark Farmer's Justin(e) steals the show - an excellent debut and he brings just a little bit of that classic 'Minder' duckin'n'divin' ambition to the role that you don't see in characters like Arnie/Melish/Rycott/Jones/Dave/Terry etc. Like an enthusiastic mini-Arthur, and a breath of fresh air. It's no wonder that his character was brought back. Justin's introduction in this episode, where he comes out of the greengrocers to meet Terry, is a brilliant piece of acting and so funny - take a look at it again!

Have to agree with most here; an enjoyable episode, let down by the damp squib ending. A 2-parter with Terry, Arthur and Justin(e) north of the border would have had the potential to be ranked amongst the very best. Unfortunately, due to the finale what should have been a 5 star episode drops to 4.
Also think the makers missed a trick when Arthur is name-dropping to Benno about all the footballers he's hob-nobbed with, they should have dropped Danny Varrow in there thus referencing another episode, and at least Arthur wouldn't have been fibbing about that one!

If there was ever an episode of Minder crying out for an extra thirty minutes running time then this is surely it. How good would it have been seeing Arthur and Terry in Glasgow, mixing it up with a few characters north of the border. What we do get is a brilliant episode with Terry and Arthur (having a singalong) on the road to Scotland to flog some England v Scotland football tickets. A nice debut by Mark Farmer as Justin (Justine haha), an up and coming wheeler dealer who sees Arthur as the "Numero uno". Loved Arthur needing time to think, not wanting to get back in the car with "Young Justine giving me GBH of the ear holes". I always laugh at Arthur running through the list of footballers he knows " Mooro, Greavesie, Bally and Besty, Dobbo, Robbo, Sniffer, Chopper". So good. Nice shot of Terry walking out at Wembley stadium as well. 4.5 out of 5.

Worth’s 4/5 but not the full 5. Just a bit too weak in a couple of areas, mainly being a bit far fetched. There are some great moments in this episode though.

A great episode that ends with a whimper, I felt it could have done with an extra 30 minutes would have made a great feature length Christmas episode, it builds up very well but then suddenly it is all over, felt like they ran out of time, trying to squeeze it in to the normal episode format, this is definitely an episode that could have been developed into a xmas special,

Watched this again last night and still stand by my previous comments that it is a good episode until the last few minutes. Arthur’s complaint that Justin “is inflicting GBH on my ear holes” made me laugh out loud.

Agree with previous comments that Mark Farmer is brilliant as Justin.
Great line from Arthur explaining his reluctance to travel to Glasgow. "I could end up in a blue circle overcoat at the bottom of the Clyde"

Just finished watching, love the stereotyping of us Jocks in it. As with The Sweeney episode Hard Men there's a lot of mickey taking, yet the Scottish characters are ultimately shown to be far more competent than their associates south of the border: Jon Croft's Alisdair Frazier isn't as fearsome as James Cosmo's Davey Freeth but he's shown to be highly intelligent, possessed of a dry wit, and he can still do the bizzo if required.

Agree with many of the comments that the ending is flat on what was a very good episode. I found this with some of The Professionals episodes, the build up was great, but then there wasn't enough screentime left to do the script justice, so the last five minutes were a hatchet job.
Minder had a script editor where The Sweeney did not. The latter trusted the writers to balance it out and do whatever they thought would work in the 48-50 minutes available. This one feels like the script got hacked about to fit the time and the end was convoluted. As Euston got bigger, I wouldn't say it got better - though it set the bar very high and still mentioned in glowing terms by the likes of HBO, who saw Euston as trailblazers.
I used to know someone exactly like Justine. Short, full of bunny and real 'dresser' (what now would be called causals) - in the 80's sense. Very sad that Mark Farmer died so young.
4/5

It definitely could have made a 90 minute special. Being a Leon Griffiths penned story, I was really impressed watching on ITV 4 today, the scene at the services where Arthur gets no change out of the world weary mechanic. The address on the side of his van is 1 King St, Carlisle. A random address, obviously. Only a google search today turns up 1 repair garage and 1 hire car place. And that's 2023. How much more accurate would it have been in the day? When you realise even such a fleeting reference had presumably been researched ( I can't believe it was just luck), doesn't it make you take your hat off to the writers/ researchers that little bit more often?

Another 5 star episode , I am certain now that season 5 was the best of all. Amazed that the guy who played the footballer wasnt in many more productions.
Loved the way Arthur always calls Justin "Justine"
