This one always feels different following the previous episodes. Completely different vibe for me. Anyone think the same?

I know what you mean. I've never felt that there's any hard edged gritty quality in this episode as you'd expect from the first 4 series. There's more of a soap opera feel to this one.

Also has anyone noticed that in this episode and the previous episode that 'My Way' is sang? In this one by the two men who knock down the greenhouse, and in the previous episode the chap who had his voice dubbed. In the hotel episode.

I really wanted Terry to give Petselli a major spanking in this one. I agree it has more of a soap opera feel and Arthur & Terry are arguably on the outskirts of the story. I like the Daley Workout idea and although it is not top 10 I like it nevertheless.
Stephen Rea who plays Rod in this was once married to Dolours Price, a former IRA bomber who did time in the 70s.
The bulldozer in the greenhouse is a very memorable scene in this one. Good spotting regarding 'My Way' Kevin - I hadn't realised it was in back to back episodes.

Quite like this one and yes, agree, it does have a different vibe to it. But I find this ep difficult to watch as Rod is quite high on my 'Most annoying characters in Minder' list...(with Franks ex-girlfriend from Rembrandt topping it).

Gave this episode a watch last night, I have seen it before but probably back around first transmission so my memories were a bit fuzzy.
Stephen Rea playing a Scotsman and Patrick Troughton playing an Italian, never understand why they did/do this type of thing, surely there are enough Scots/Italian actors around to play these parts. I also notice that a lot of programmes of this time always had the "jocks" drink Tartan special, YUK! I've never known anyone who drank the stuff, it is utter rank.
Anyway, rant over. Again not classic Minder, but still a decent enough episode, Terry playing the good guy coming to the rescue of a damsel in distress once again. You always felt they could have gave this episode a touch more grit in it, especially with the Italian/Scots element and also that drugs were involved.
Still some good moments, especially in the Winchester club with the answering machine and the regulars hearing Arthur speaking to Roddy about the girls and yoghurt, I think it would have been good if they all got up and followed Arthur and Terry out of the club in the hope of making their imaginations come true! Some of the scenes of the girls doing their keepfit routine in their leotards were very easy on the eye, not sure I would have stood and watched like Terry did so openly, must be a tough job being an actor. Arthurs face when Terry pulled the cash out at the end of the episode was priceless.

It was fun to see Patrick Troughton, Tony Anholt and Janet Fielding all in the same episode. The opening with the guys messing around the answering machine was amusing. Terry's explanation of the double meaning to The Daley Workout was laugh out loud funny.
The episode does have a different feel to it but not so different you wonder what program you're watching.

Does anyone know if the greenhouses used in this episode are the same ones that appear in the Public Eye episode The Windsor Royal? I suppose one set of greenhouses looks pretty much like another and I have not seen these episodes back to back but when I saw this episode of Public Eye they reminded me of the ones in this episode. This would have been made a few years previously but they look pretty run down and I thought they could be the same.

The thing that stands out for me in this episode, is the first scene. Some kids are climbing up on a railing...look closely and one of them takes a bit of a tumble. He runs off and you can only imagine him bursting into tears off camera.

There are several instances of members of the public viewing filming whilst peering out from behind curtains etc.

Lots to like here. The Daley Thompson posters ('Daley Workout' - did the athlete know about this?), the pre-PC bottoms, the usual game of 'where have I seen him/her before (ie since)? The icing on the cake is dear old Patrick Troughton - not just Dr Who #2 but Cole Hawlings in the classic kids' TV drama 'The Box Of Delights' and a damn good actor to boot(as here). Love Arthur in the sweat gear and ubiquitous hat and yes, I spotted the little chap outside the school come to grief. The digger sequence looks like it was a riot to do. I like episodes like this that show Terry's sensitive side - here with the wife's kids and the Italian family - as it adds to his character and detracts from the 2-D hard-man character he could have become. Oh - and mullets/ big glasses dates this towards the mid-80s.

A great episode & probably the most remembered of this season & most often repeated by ITV 4 The opening with Arthur demonstrating the answering machine & everyone waiting in anticipation for the phone to ring was hilarious Fitness studios were becoming all the rage at this time & Arthur was getting in on the act as usual , although I don't think the track suit & trilby hat image caught on ! some great sights here , especially the lovely Louise with her "naughty secretary" look - lucky Prince Andrew !!! At least Terry got the family feud sorted & his revenge on smarmy Petselli The grey Ford Orion used by Roddy would be one of the very first ones -it has an August 1983 registration date & Ford Motor Co plates -they were only launched in summer 1983 Petselli drives a nice white Porsche 928 which he claims he only borrowed , when Terry threatens to drench the interior with a hose pipe A wonderful piece of nostalgia , is the Capital Radio 194 sticker on the window of Laura s Mini Did Capital have any answer phones , though , that played Harry Secombe ? -Two years later Tony Anholt was seen in one of his best remembered roles - Charles Frere in Howard s Way - The elderly gent at the beginning , that reports Roddy breaking into the flat , was familiar as the grandfather from 70s sitcom The Liver Birds

I don't think the script did Stephen Rea any favours, good actor though he is. I liked the two Scottish cousins who managed to be crafty and idiotic at the same time. The scene in the demolished greenhouse where they're offering their services to Petselli's bemused henchman is quite funny.

Bit disappointing this one. Lots of potential in The Daley Fitness idea, but too much time is devoted to Roddy, who is quite an unappealing character. Good cast in this one and Terry and Arthur are on good form when together. Interesting to see those early answer machines.

A very poor episode this one for me, I can't really put my finger on why but it just doesn't grip me like the others.

Very familiar this one.Actually remember seeing it.Maybe it's Janet Fielding & Katie Rabbet in leotards.Be interested to hear how the Greenhouse scene came to be.Did they scout round for one being domolished or just bulldoze one to rebuild it.Great to see Patrick Troughton a wonderful actor. As usual Arthur takes to the Keep fit business like a duck to water."Money for old rope" as he puts it.Nice gags with the telephone answering machine where the whole pub is sat in silence waiting for a call.

I watched this again tonight and enjoyed but still agree it has a different feel to it. Arthur trying to cash in on the fitness craze is still amusing.

Arthur demonstrating that answering machine, I remember my first landline answering machine mid eighties, I thought it was the dogs.
Also how I could ring my home from work..put a code into the works handset and retrieve my messages, I thought it was fantastic. Who would have known years later voicemail on landline and mobile phones as standard..it’s the future.
Back to the episode I think this wasn’t a top watch, but nevertheless a worthy watch.

Very disappointing episode for me, especially after such a great opening scene in the Winchester. Too many storylines going on, none of which is satisfactorily resolved. It's the only episode I've rated "poor".

A couple of few connections here with Patrick Troughton. Janet Fielding and Pat had just finished working on the Five Doctors special in 1983 and Tony Anholt who was a regular on Space 1999 had worked with Troughton on the final episode of that series, The Dorcons! Strangely enough though neither actually appeared with Patrick in any of the scenes did they? JB

I watched this again this morning on ITV4 and it’s not particularly one of my favourites but the scenes with Terry and Arthur are as good as ever and it’s great to see Janet Fielding and Patrick Troughton in this because I am a fan of the old classic series of Dr. Who.
George Cole, Dennis Waterman, Janet Fielding and the girls and Patrick Troughton were the positive highlights of this episode. The rest were as dull as dishwater.

Better episode than I remembered it, I think i'd only seen it once during the GranadaPlus re-runs. Arthur was swanning around in a tracksuit early doors, would have been nice if he'd still had it on when Terry dragged the instructor away, and had had to conduct the class himself!
