I thought David Hargreaves was very good in the role, he is someone I usually associate with playing straight put upon characters rather than a nut job. Absolutely. The first time I saw this episode I was probably around 10 years old and couldn't believe DH could play this type of role as i'd been used to seeing him present childrens programmes, all quiet and smiles. Agree also, total change of character for DH.

I love that bit where a stunt man doubling for David Hargreaves trips on the dock and Terry whacks him into the drink! I could laugh for hours at that bit! That little two step he does is magnificent! JB

Been done better? It was absolutely hilarious! Plus the guy who goes into the water is as flat haired as Superman compared to Archie! JB

Great episode! I met Pete Postlethwaite in 1989 at a Dr Who convention of all places. My mate spotted him first and said - hey look over there its oily wragg! I ended up at the bar with him for the next two hours sinking pints and smoking his Dunhill cigarettes. Top bloke, very modest and eager to talk

I gave it a GOOD rating rather than a GREAT - I think sometimes we might overrate some of the episodes so I will dish out top marks if I reckon it really IS a classic.

Watched this morning on ITV4 whilst waiting for a phone call, very enjoyable. Always good seeing Des and Dave get bigger roles in an episode and always a treat to see Des. I actually reckon Des could have had a series on his own, but would have been a bit darker than Minder as something clearly dodgy about Des and the company he kept.
Archie Simpson was a nutter in that he liked trouble, but seeing how quickly Terry sorted him out on the wasteground I would say his bark was much worse than his bite. His two 'heavies' were strictly lower league as well.
I would also liked to have seen Terry stick one on the guy who stitched up Arthur whilst looking for premises for Oily, then took his money off him in the lock up, I thought that was taking a liberty, a quiet word with Arthur would have sufficed without the need to take his cash.

Simpson was a slogger who relied on his physical appearance and his noise intimidating people. Anyone who knew how to fight like Terry would get the better of him I reckon. Agree about his sidekicks, they were certainly in the wrong line of work but then Simpson didn't appear to be very affluent so I suppose he could only pay peanuts, in which case...…! That's a very good point about Terry getting Arthurs money back which I've not thought about before. It would have been good to see Terry track him down to a Soho club and do the business.

I'm sure ITV4 cut some dialogue out. Not seen the episode in years, but convinced Arthur, after being mugged, says something along the lines of "You picked the wrong one here, I'll have you, I'll have the bl*ody lot of you" but watching the ITV4 episode today, only "You picked the wrong one here" line was used.
I think one of the few times Terry used a sneaky punch as well when he sparked out the thug holding the wages clerk on that wasteland, smacking him when he wasn't looking. Terry was always "fair" when approaching a fight.

Terry did use a sneaky punch BUT he was outnumbered 3 to 1. "He's gone, there's only two of you now...what's up?" Quite a cool Terry moment imo.

This is one of my favourite episodes so far. So many great scenes. Dramatic like the fight in the Winchester and by the river and humorous like Arthur in the aftermath of the bar fight and the fall into the Thames Arthur had no luck in this episode! Pete Postlethwaite as a guest star It's one of the best things while watching to see which actor is going to turn up next in an episode. I recognise so many character actors from other shows I love too. Just love all the character interaction in this. All rallying round to help Oily. Des and Arthur having a sleepover at Terry's "What they doing in there... having a tupperware party?" And the running joke with the jeans and the end scene in the Winchester with them all together is fun. Shame it was Des last episode but glad he got lots to do in his last ep. I do have a bit of a soft spot for him

I like how Terry and Dave are the only major characters in the episode not involved in a scam or dodgy deal.

Watched this episode today and absolutely loved it. Great to see Pete Postlethwaite (credited as Peter Postlethwaite), a brief-ish cameo from Peter Childs, dodgy Des, some wonderful riverside locations and an almost Sweeneyesque bar room brawl, in which Dave unusually takes a bit of physical punishment. The sub-plot with the seedy businessman seemed a bit superfluous and didn't really go anywhere.
I couldn't really tell because of screen definition, but I got the impression that when Oily and Terry were scouting for Oily's wife, the flat numbered 86 had a semi-boarded front door, but when Terry calls there it has no boarding on it.
Definitely one of the best episodes.

I think most of the flats have boarded up windows and doors, Oily's is just about the only one that isn't. I wonder if it was an empty/derelict apartment that was used? After all, we only see as far as the doorway

When Terry is talking to the old lady who now lives in the flat, he asks about Oily's wife and gets the reply that, "..she married the man from the pru.".
I've always assumed that this means 'The Prudential', the finance company. Their reps would call every week to take contributions and/or payments so I presume Mrs Wragg fell for her rep and moved on?
Any other suggestions?

Any other suggestions? You are correct baz, I don't think there is any other than that. Though I'd always understood that it was an Insurance company, so they were paying their Life Insurance contributions weekly or paying into one of their pension schemes. I would imagine there were plenty who ran off!

a classic episode, a Minder episode that had everything, punch ups, funny, gritty, as the show went on we got further away from having all those elements......

David Hargreaves portrays a very convincing psychopath. A good episode. My only criticism is Pete Postlethwaite's slightly dodgy accent. Arthur falling in the water was another gem of a Minder moment. Nice ad-libbing from DW and GL at the final scene.

David Hargreaves portrays a very convincing psychopath. Always makes me wonder why Simpson needs his two 'minders' - and I use the term loosely. I don't think those two could punch their way out of a wet paper bag! Terry made light work of them at 'Sunnyhurst Road' and even Des kept them quiet in the Winchester, whilst in the final confrontation at the wharf, they were utterly useless!
