As politics isn't an option, can't post too much about this despot. Zimbabwe will be celebrating on the streets of Harare tonight!

Impossible to say anything positive about this vile tyrant who wrecked his country for his own personal gain. Zimbabwean independence hardly the UK's finest hour either as we turned a blind eye to genocide in Matabeleland. Rather gives the lie to the supposed Rolls Royce civil service doesn't it?

He actually started off as a progressive with some big ideas, much in the mould of Mandela, but as soon as he got to power he tore a country to shreds and killed anything or anyone that got in his way, Black or White.
I worked with a girl from Zimbabwe, whose parents still owned their farm, this was around 2009/10, but it was a constant struggle for them and never knowing what they were going to wake up to in a morning.

Likewise Daz I worked with a black Zimbabwean bloke, his family had been driven out by Mugabe for being the "wrong" tribe. Shameful what we allowed to happen there.

We had some Zimbabwean lads that joined the army, as although Zimbabwe WAS independant, it was still part of the commonwealth, and they were eager to sign up. One lad, Mash, readily agreed that under Ian Smith, it was far better for blacks. There was no apartheid like in South Africa, there was a good economy and a decent infrastructure of education, hospitals and leisure. Mugabe plundered his own economy and slaughtered his own people for years. Genocide doesn't even come close. When he resigned, he did so ensuring he would be safe from prosecution.....he knew the game was up!

Interestingly I was saying something to mias the other day which sounded 99.9% the same as this, only it was about British politician whose name begins with the letter that comes after the first one in the alphabet. He thinks he is above the law too. Mugabe, I agree with everything posted above

He seemed like a breath of fresh air in 1980, but certainly from the late-90s onwards this was plainly not the case.

As early as January 1983 he had started to show his true side when de deployed North Korean trained troops to quell the dissidents in Matabeleland. His troops engaged in beatings, public executions, arson, torture and massacres.
TBH he was probably at it before 1983.

I see he is to be given a "heroes" State Funeral in Zimbabwe. I am sure there will be plenty who pine after him, just like there were plenty over here who pined when our own wicked witch popped her clogs a few years back.

I see he is to be given a "heroes" State Funeral in Zimbabwe. It will probably cost a few million Zimbabwean dollars, ie: about two hundred quid!

I see the stadium where they held his funeral was only a quarter full, which makes me suspect they may have did this knowing full well it wouldn't have a good turn out

Sounds like a typical Plymouth Argyle home crowd turnout on a Saturday.

I see the stadium where they held his funeral was only a quarter full, which makes me suspect they may have did this knowing full well it wouldn't have a good turn out Zimbabwe has the highest literacy rate in Africa, the people there aren't daft, they know when they're being screwed and by whom. Unfortunately the power structure embedded by Mugabe and taken over by his equally grisly successor isn't going to be dislodged by peaceful protest.

I'm just reading about him, Mugabe is really something. I studied with a Zimbabwean person one time and I always wanted to know what was driving him mad, I think I have my answer and I really hope for the best for my old friend now to recover quickly. haha, that's a good one.

Rhodesian/Zimbabwe history is really interesting with the declaration of UDI, the Bush War, Mugabe taking over, and all the recent events.
I think there is a group in Zimbabwe - the Army etc = who steal all the wealth such as the gold, minerals etc. Robert Mugabe's young wife was planning to take over as President/dictator which is why Robert Mugabe was deposed.
