Sad news indeed. Big Vern and his culinary tastes made for one of the best subsidiary characters characters ever to appear in Minder.

I was very sorry to hear about Mike Reid's premature demise. Vernon was a great character, I liked how he called Arthur "Mr D" and how he drove Arthur's Jaguar around the corners with Arthur in the back - "I think I need to get some more air in the back tyres to get it to drift Mr D!!" Arthur's reaction to Vernon's recommendation of an 18 quid bottle of wine back in 1981 was another classic moment!
It's just amazing to think George Cole has outlived a vast amount of much younger actors who appeared in the show - sadly actors including Peter Childs, Adam Faith, Ralph Bates, Ronald Fraser, Roy Kinnear, Brian Glover, James Booth, Don Henderson, Gareth Hunt, Tony Anholt and George Sewell all have sadly passed away.
In fact, I've been thinking is George the oldest surviving cast member of Minder? I think the actor that lived the longest who appeared in Minder has to be Maurice Denham who appeared in the Orient Express and the Bird Man of Wormswood Scrubs, I'm sure he was 92 or 93 when he passed away.
George is certainly still going strong, I see he will be appearing alongside New Tricks Alun Armstrong in a new BBC comedy drama "People Like Us" later this year.

Sad news about Mike Reid. I've got a few of Mike's videos, as the big fella was a great joke teller as well as capable of doing an excellent turn as a guest in the likes of Minder and Snatch, not to mention the Arfur-like Frank Butcher. I lent a mate some Minder tapes a while back and he was surprised to hear Mike as Vern saying "Back of the net" many years before Alan Partridge.

Very sad to hear that Mike Reid had passed away, he was a good old fashioned stand comedian and we are not allowed them these days !! Not sure if George Sewell is dead though ? Just checked and George Sewell has passed away I never knew that, i bumped into him one day in Glasgow and about 3 weeks later I was in London and bumped into him again which always made me smile
