Fantastic ep. Watching as a kid, I always liked Des; shame he didn't feature in more eps. He was even more dodgy than Arthur ! And I love the old Bedford TK that Terry jumps onto. Fabulous. When you watch the scene of Terry jumping off the flyover, there's not actually that much room for error. The stuntman lands pretty close to the edge of the load, I would imagine the stunt had been arranged for him to land more toward the centre. They were probably all down the boozer for a liquid lunch before the filming.

Yes, I noticed that too. Was Peter Brayham the stuntman ?

It didn't look like him to me, didn't seem to be as big built as PB. But even if he didn't do it I'm sure he would have been involved in the planning and arrangement.

Love this episode but, if I may critique the writing, introducing such strong characters (and well-acted characters) as the Hurst's for just one scene leaves it a bit abbreviated.

Love this episode but, if I may critique the writing, introducing such strong characters (and well-acted characters) as the Hurst's for just one scene leaves it a bit abbreviated. It may have been an idea for Hurst to confront Fenton later in the episode. Either leaving his house with Terry to visit Fentons office or taking Terry to Fentons home. He could have been made more use of I agree.

After hankering to watch this episode for weeks and unable to figure it out on my boxset, I watched it tonight after being steered to its correct location from the good folk on this forum (Cheers Swainy). I was positive it was an older episode though.
One of the finest episodes of Minder IMO, just nothing not to like in this one. Top class acting, top class actors, great story line and some great location filming and Arthur even letting Tel keep the £200, he got from Jackie for getting back her money and all this in a series one episode, don't make them like this any more. I wonder if Terry ever took the £500 quid of Des.
I would certainly recommend this one to someone watching Minder for the first time as a starting point.
Just superb.

Watched this on ITV4. It is a great episode, just realised I have never voted for it so marked it excellent.
I think Arthur's accent is much closer to George Cole's normal speaking voice. If this was the first one made he must have given further thought to his character after he started.
I looked out for the bloopers this time and clearly there was an element of storyline cut out at some time. Why else dress up Terry's car to look like a wreck in one scene? But a top class episode in every way. Of course Terry gets the cash at the end but loses the girl.

And a shop window full of board games, which had me pausing the disc three times! I watched this again today, and the bit that I paused and watched again and again is the white cat that wanders very slowly and leisurely across the road in front of Des's van as they pull up outside Fenton's office. When Des starts skulking around before stealing the blue Cortina, it almost looks as if he has to take a slight detour around the cat, which plonks itself very happily in the middle of the pavement!

The state of Terry's Capri when Des tries to give him the money... it looks like it's been three times around the field in 'You Need Hands', it's caked in dirt.
And when Terry chases Des, it always amuses me how they do a hop, skip and jump through a pile of debris when they could quite easily have gone round the side!

But we wouldnt have had the comedy scene in there ..lol

Loving re-watching Minder on the Umbrella sets...and noticed that this is the ep we first meet Des (?) And I'd forgotten he was taking Terry around nicking motors in this one! Makes more continuity now when Des says to Terry while packing up his tools in his garage in You need Hands about nicking motors - "Yes I could go out and nick a nice new Merc or BMW..but I've given all that up now..."

Another brilliant episode.
Derek Jacobi was excellent as always - you can tell an actor is good when you forget the real person and want to slap him for being such a sleazy liar!

This was tonight's episode. It is interesting to see the first filmed episode of a show and compare it to what came later. It's obvious Minder hit the ground running from the start. This is the third time I've seen it and the Mr. Booze sign still amuses me. Derek Jacobi is great as the slimeball Fenton who is in serious need of a spanking. I barely recognized Keith Alexander at the end.

Love the old Bedford van with sliding doors, no seat belts, reminds me of my dad's old van, no health and safety necessary in them days ! Oh and more evidence of Terry's Fulham FC allegiance with a pendant hanging on the wall of his bedsit. Lovely stuff.

The designers probably thought 'who on earth would be silly enough to fall out?' They credited folk with a bit of common sense back then. Unlike nowadays of course. '

This was the first episode that I watched all the way through after catching bits and pieces here and there with the re-runs on ITV4. So it's kind of cool to discover it was the first episode filmed. I'm new to watching as I wasn't born when it first started Surprised it's taken me this long to discover it really as I like retro shows with all the old, authentic locations and colourful characters and lots of brilliant, familiar actors that you now recognise from so many other things. So far I've made my way through the first three series although I have also seen a couple of the very last series episodes. Derek Jacobi is fab in this - although it took me a while to get used to him playing a bad guy after recently watching him in Cadfael Terry chasing after Des Loved them out smarting Freddie and the get away jumping down onto the top of the lorry! A good one to see first I think- top class guest star and nice little character moments .....and the cat

Another very good episode. Point deducted for the posh Arthur accent. I know it was the first filmed so maybe they decided Arthur was more lower middle class dodgy geezer than the pseudo-toff portayed here.

I understand this is where it all began. A really good opener. Des has got to be up there with the best semi regular characters. 👍

I think he may have been a better addition if he was a bit of a fighter who could step in and stand by Terry when needed. I think they were beginning to go down this route with Des in his series three episodes as he was more involved in the storylines and had a bit more character development. In 'You Need Hands' he drives one of the diggers along with Terry. Although he did stay in the van when Terry got into trouble 🙃..... he did make him a cup of tea in bed after though 😊 And in 'Back in Good Old England' he fights off those two guys in the Winchester and gets involved in the dockside fight. I liked seeing him interacting more and helping out and showing another side rather than just being a little rogue 😄 I would have loved to see him in some more episodes 😊

Back on Monday 5th November 1979, there was only one choice, as confirmed in the Daily Express TV Listings: Great grab, but surely that's "Waltham Green"..... Given that Jo goes off to Majorca at the end with Andy the taxi boss, it makes me wonder how much she was leading Terry on in her flat to make him really want to get her money back, especially as the call she takes to "go to work" is from Andy...

Enjoying reading the comments about this great episode. Having just rewatched the whole of series 10 and then coming back to series 1 the difference in Arthur's accent is astounding. Great comic acting from Derek Jacob and George Layton. Also the actress Kathleen Byron in a minor role but a great beauty in her day who played mad Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus. Love the early days of Minder when it really was about Waterman the minder.
