Avon was my favourite TV character at the time. Paul Darrow was great at playing him.
RIP Paul

Wobbly sets and shockingly poor special effects... but Blakes 7 was fab viewing for me as a kid growing up... and Avon was as cool as they came. RIP Paul

Very sorry to hear this.
I met Paul at a Doctor Who event about ten years ago. This was just before he had to have both legs amputated. He seemed like a nice guy and he said 'hello' to me as we were standing looking at some merchandise on a table.
He was brilliant as Avon... by far the best and most complex character in Blake's 7 and indeed in many a sci-fi series. I remember going to see him in a play in Hull, circa 1984, The Owl and the Pussycat I believe. He was, as had been commented, also in Doctor Who and the Silurians -- one of my absolute favourite Who stories. I'm glad I got to meet him and got him to sign a B7 DVD.
About 15 years ago I proposed a Sherlock Holmes audio series to a CD producer. We met and discussed it, but it never happened. A shame, especially since I had recommended that Paul Darrow play Holmes. I think he would have been great.
R.I.P. Paul.

He was on 'Pointless Celebrities' not long ago and he was in a wheelchair.

Yeah just saw a picture of him in a wheelchair- all seemed to go under the radar a bit though. Perhaps that’s the way he wanted it

Something I always liked about Avon was that despite being a rat bast*rd most of the time he still had a personal code he would not violate. He gives Blake his word that he will stay and fight at the end of 'Star One' and he keeps his word when he could have just taken the Liberator out of there.

Really sad news. Also in 'Dr Who & The Silurians' and 'Timelash'. Really good actor. RIP Avon Yeah he was great on Dr Who & The Silurians and he stole the show from Colin Baker when he starred on Timelash. I also remember him on an episode of Hammer House of Horror called Guardians of the Abyss. Didn’t he own the rights to Blake’s 7 and was planning on reviving it. Sadly that won’t happen now but in my eyes Paul Darrow was and is Blake’s 7.

I loved HHofH and Guardian of the Abyss was one of my favourites - with Mr Darrow playing an unscrupulous antiques dealer. I also have, on DVD, the 1975 BBC TV series 'The Legend of Robin Hood', in which Paul turns in a good performance as The Sheriff of Nottingham.

He had some great lines in B7- one I remember was when he’s asked “don’t you get bored with being right all the time” “No - only with the rest of you being wrong”

He had some great lines in B7- one I remember was when he’s asked “don’t you get bored with being right all the time” “No - only with the rest of you being wrong” Another good line was in the final episode when Dayna said Servalan had no reason to lie about Blake being dead. Avon said she doesn't need a reason to lie as it comes naturally to her like breathing.

BBC made the right choice moving him centre stage when Gareth Thomas left. As a kid I remember being annoyed that Blake had done a bunk, but watching them all again a year or so back I prefer the ones with Avon in charge. He's far more charismatic and Paul Darrow plays him exactly right. Great double act with him and Michael Keating.

Very sad, I didn't know he had his legs amputated. I never watched Blake's 7 but I enjoyed seeing him fairly recently in Toast of London as Duncan Clench, a very strange director with an even stranger friend.
