Very sad to hear this. This guy was as fit as a flea. We saw him most years when he brought the Beat over for their annual gig in Dublin. Intimate gigs, packed full of energy where he darted around stage 'toasting' with his son Ranking junior. Good nights. Farewell big man

Really sad to here this. He died of lung cancer. 56 is no age.
He had been performing in one of the two bands using The Beat as their name. Original lead singer Dave Wakeling was leading the other band.
RIP

I bet, like the great Mark Holliss, all The Beat's back catalogue will now go out of stock on Amazon and they then rise their prices to match the surge in demand.

Same thing happened with Scott Walker - his first album was £10:99 on vinyl the other day and now it’s £21:09 and out of stock.

He was only 16 years old when he first appeared on Top Of The Pops. The Face magazine realised how cool he was by giving him a front cover to himself. The only time I have ever been to Birmingham I passed him in the street, he must have been at least 6 foot 2. RIP Rude Boy.

My cousins were well into The Beat back in the 80s. I have to admit I'm not that au fait with the band's songs, but Mirror in the Bathroom is a pure class track. RIP Roger.

I must admit I hadn't heard about this. The Beat played a part in what made music of their period great. R.I.P. Ranking Roger.
