A legend who was helped win the World Cup and who made that incredible save against Pele in the 1970 tournament in Mexico. He was 81.
RIP

That save was amazing, even if Alan Mullery told him he should have caught it... I don't think England would have lost that 1970 World Cup quarter final v West Germany if he hadn't gone down with good poisoning.

Very sad. You know how good he was? After losing his eye on a car crash, he plied his trade in America as a goalkeeper, and STILL did a job! Always sad when a fine player has to sell his medals, something the FA need to have a long look at themslves. RIP Gordon.

With the amount of money in the English game that really shouldn't be happening.

Quite a few high profile names from yesteryear have resorted to this. Scandalous. Ray Kennedy at Liverpool sold EVERYTHING so he could have more treatment for Parkinsons. Just so wrong.

The scandalous part is why it costs so much in the first place, another story, another debate which probably doesn't belong here. Saw many tributes to Gordon on the TV yesterday - regardless of the fact the English media love to bang on till infinity and beyond about 1966, everyone only had great things to say about Gordon Banks. Top bloke who did a more than top job - you can't ask for more than that.

Always be considered England’s No.1 first choice goalkeeper imo.
RIP Gordon.

Yes, I think the general consensus of opinion is that he was England's best ever keeper.

Fitting if after the games, they were auctioned off with ALL proceeds going to his family.

His funeral was featured on the BBC News at 6.00 this evening. The city of Stoke gave him a great send off. Bobby & Jack Charlton and Geoff Hurst were present.

Pretty shabby that a programme dedicated to Gordon is on tonight, 10pm on ITV4. Very little promotion about it, like it's a "going through the motions PR exercise"
