Very sad. A principled man. Regardless of politics, he was a good man, who served his country with Royal Marines. Godspeed Paddy.

I didn't mind him at all, spoke sense a few times which is not something you can usually attribute to our politcal masters.
Read his book about the Cockleshell Heroes and found it very good.
RIP Paddy

As Ace said, regardless of politics,I thought Paddy Ashdown was a very sound bloke.
I seem to remember a story of him as an MP being confronted/attacked by somebody armed with a knife. His military training kicked in (I think he was ex-special forces) and he disarmed them with little fuss.
RIP.

As Ace said, regardless of politics,I thought Paddy Ashdown was a very sound bloke. I agree 101% ... Paddy was a man I always listened to and accepted was a balanced person with no real extreme view agenda other than tell things how he saw them and what would probably be best for everyone. He never seemed so hot headed like others around him which was the appealing part and was why I always listened and respected his opinion. RIP Paddy - the country needs more folks like you right now.

Royal Marines and SBS (naval equivalent of SAS) I'm other words, "nails" Read a comment elsewhere that he was the only MP you could lend £10 too, as you knew you'd get it back.

Also one of the few politicians to have done a proper job in the real world outside of politics.

He had a very interesting life. When the Liberals and SDP merged he took over the new party - the Liberal Democrats - and they struggled. But he turned them into a solid third party.
It will be strange watching General Election nights on the BBC with no David Dimbleby or Paddy Ashdown.

RIP Paddy. Mentions how he managed to get the seats for this party considering that it's Lib Dems. Usually Labour or Conservative winning seats.
