Yes, he was a big name in the 1970s on BBC TV and BBC Radio. He made that famous appearance on 'The Morecambe and Wise Show'.

Indeed, himself and Kenneth Kendall, in that very open plan newsroom they had up to about 1980. He had a good innings anyway.

He seemed like the perfect professional - polite and not ego driven.
He appealed to every kind of viewer.
Didn't realise that he, Robert Dougall and Kenneth Kendall were the original BBC TV News broadcasters. They held those positions for years thereafter, apparently with modest salaries (comparatively).
In childhood, I also remember him as the voice on 'Mary, Mungo & Midge' (which I have on DVD) and 'Teddy Edward'.

RIP Richard Baker.as gustav has mentioned,first recollection for me was Mary,mungo and midge and teddy Edward.and then his appearances on morcombe and wise,it’s a knockout etc.
