The actor Chris Jury has announced that fellow Lovejoy actor and someone well known around here for roles in The Sweeney, Randall & Hopkirk (both versions) The Baron, The Avengers, Strangers, Thriller, Department S and The Saint to name but a few, has passed away.
RIP.

RIP. Was only after digging out his excellent Sweeney appearance in Golden boy last week. Great actor. Strangely enough, I am in the process of watching The Sweeney series 1 at the moment (I watch one ep. a month) and Golden Boy was the next episode due to be watched...

Former resident of the Penzance area. My Dad met him on Porthcurno beach a few years back. An incredibly prolific and excellent character actor. So many notable performances over decades. Will be sadly missed.
RIP

Strangely enough, I'm working my way through The Sweeney series one at the mo and was watching Golden Boy tonight whilst having my evening nosebag. I remember him more from Lovejoy and The Football Factory. RIP Dudley

Sorry to hear that. Always a welcome presence in anything he appeared in. Him and John Junkin even emerged with their dignity intact from the Football Factory film. Their WW2 vet pensioners were the best thing in it by a country mile.

Very sad to hear this. He was in a lot of stuff over the years. I was watching him in quite a recent Father Brown just the other day.

They certainly don't make him like him anymore. If there is somewhere upstairs I hope he is sinking a few with his old drinking buddies from yesteryear, including the one and only Mike Pratt. If you ever come across a film on Talking Pictures called 'The Boys' starring Dudley, give it a watch you won't be disappointed. I was looking through his IMDB page and he has a fair old list of credits stretching all the way back to 1959 and still listed in 2018.
RIP Dudley

He was great as Tinker Dill in Lovejoy. After becoming so familiar with him in that role is was fun to see another side of his talent when he played villains in the ITC mentioned earlier. I watched the episode of The Sweeney he did last week.
Rest In Peace.

RIP Dudley Good call re The Boys , I saw that recently on TP and it's a fine film. Dudley popped up in SO many decent films and tv shows over the last six decades he really did have a prolific and varied career. RIP Sir

His list of credits on IMDB is staggering. He was never out of work for 60 years! He was still working recently and three of his most recent pieces of work are still to be released. It was an incredible career. He appeared in 'The Saint', 'The Baron', 'Department S', 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)' for ITC. I always thought his most bizarre role was playing a tough guy biker in the 'George & Mildred' Movie in 1980. He was 47 at the time and looked way too old for the part he was playing. www.imdb.com/name/nm0840303/

He was quite unique looking I think, and as a result his performances stand out. When Dudley used to show up randomly in stuff, which he always seemed to, it was always a highlight.
I last saw him, fairly recently, in the episode 'Marooned', from the Welsh comedy series Fun At The Funeral Parlour.
He was very funny in that as a super camp, gay sailor. It's an amusing episode.
RIP Dudley

Norman Eshley said at the Britiish TV celebration last year how he and Dudley were struggling to find work when they started out but Dudley was a lot more proactive in trying to get jobs. One day they walked onto one of the stages at Elstree where an ITC show was being filmed (he couldn’t remember which one) and Dudley marched up to the director as he was lining up a shot and said, “I’m Dudley and this is Norman and we’re whoring ourselves out for work”. It did the trick as the director subsequently hired them both.

The IMDB page has a photo of them together. www.imdb.com/title/tt0558031/?ref_=tt_chEDIT - It could be the 'Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)' episode 'Could You Recognise the Man Again?'. www.imdb.com/title/tt0682593/

I did wonder about that but then thought that those roles would already have been cast. It wasn’t clear whether they were employed on the production that was filming or a subsequent one. Either way, I can just imagine Dudley saying that.

Has to be 'Department S' because the Department S' episode was filmed in July 1968. The 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)' one was filmed in April 1969. Surely after their performance in 'Department S' they would have been a shoe in for 'Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)' only 9 months later.

Dudley and Norman Eshley made a great team in those two episodes. I knew The R&H(D) one very well and couldn't believe it when I saw Handicap Dead for the first time. I did like Dudley as an actor but I must say 'Golden Boy' isn't one of my favourite Sweeney episodes. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2018/sep/16/dudley-sutton-obituaryRIP

Former resident of the Penzance area. DS was quite involved in the art and literature scene around Penzance and St.Ives. He used to give talks and performances at The Acorn. The few occasions that I saw him, he looked exactly how an arty stage actor should imo. Corduroy jacket, pastel coloured canvas trousers and a scarf. Sad news and a big loss to the acting world. RIP.

"After he gave an intense performance as Eddy Black in The Saint in 1964, Roger Moore described him as his personal favourite villain, but Sutton eventually tired of working on seemingly interchangeable crime series – while making a 1970 episode of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), he even tore up a scene and rewrote it with his co-star, Norman Eshley."
Dudley's first film role was in 'The Boys' in 1962, for which The Shadows wrote a few tunes. I saw it on TV about 11 years ago (mainly watching it to hear the Shads' tunes) but found it an engrossing film. Highly recommended.

A memorable actor indeed.
I was on a break at work, and 'Lovejoy' was on the TV just the other day - Dudley was there, with his distinctive hair.
R.I.P. Dudley Sutton.
