Sad news earlier this evening of the death of The Fall frontman Mark E Smith, a truly inventive musician.

Sad news but probably not too surprising. A man dedicated to his music, not interested in any type of glamour or glitz that is sought after by many in the business.
RIP.

Sad, sad news to hear this morning. I really liked the guy, a total one off and original maverick . A group I first got into when at School, but I knew nothing of their indie cred at the time and thought they were a one hit wonder group, it was around the time Hit the North and Victoria were released, it wasn't until I started to read the music press that I realized they were something of a legendary band.
Anyone who likes the Fall at all should try and get hold of his book, well worth a read and not in the slightest you average biography.
RIP Mark

Sad news indeed. I had heard he wasn't too well in recent times. He has to be admired for his uncompromising attitude for nearly 4 decades.
RIP

6 Music has been playing the Fall all day, just a pity it took Marks death for them to play more Fall.

His interviews were always entertaining even when you disagreed with what he was saying. I've read his book which was also a good laugh.

Sad to lose one of the few remaining working class heroes , an honest plain speaking man with a unique talent.

I never got into The Fall, but I appreciate that Mark E. Smith was certainly his own man, and you need people like that in life. I always remember him winning an award - IIRC it was a 'lifetime achievement award' or similar at the BRITS, c. late-1990s. After a short & alcohol-influenced interview he told the smiling Jo Whiley to "f*** off....." R.I.P. Mark E Smith.

A couple of surreal moments that stick in the mind are him reading the football results (on Grandstand I think it was) and appearing on Newsnight after the death of John Peel - cue lots of gurning and a very disjointed conversation with Gavin Essler in which Smith ended up questioning his interviewer as to whether he was John Peel's replacement.
