Very sad. Career nose-dived after the mid-70s, which was a shame after his iconic TV Series. If he were around today at his peak, regardless of his sexuality, he'd be a star a lot longer.
RIP

Sad news to wake up to this morning. Wyngarde was a superb actor and Jason King will go down as a great character.
RIP

Been on the trail of Wyngarde in Vienna and Salzburg location spotting recently. Stood where he stood.
He was a star and has given me hours of great entertainment.
Jason King is legend.
RIP Peter

Sad news. Although familiar with his acting I have never seen any of his ITC series, this I shall rectify.
Certainly a one off, a true maverick and what a life he led, never dull or understated. We can safely say we will never see his like again.
RIP

I’d be interested to hear what you think of this book. RIP to a British TV/ITC Colossus.

I've read that Wyngarde was approached by the author about cooperating in the book but he declined. After it was published Wyngarde told the author he felt it was a fair and accurate book.

Given his age and health this isn't a surprise but is still sad news. He was excellent as Jason King. One of those all too rare perfect combinations of actor and role. King may be what he is best known for but he gave many memorable performances in shows made by ITC and in shows like The Avengers.
Rest In Peace. Thank you for all the entertainment.

Though not a fan of the paper, they always did the best obituaries. I was reading this last night and thought there’s no way I’m linking this on the forum. Reads like something found more in the Daily Mail, they did a sour article on Keith Chegwin the day after he died.

I’d be interested to hear what you think of this book. So would I. I see it is written by one of the founders of The Six of One brigade...........

Not wishing to sound like a pedant but it was Gloucester bus station, currently undergoing a long overdue renovation, but for years one of the bleakest transport hubs you could never wish to visit. On a more positive note there was an obit section on R4 last night which mentioned the incident but also pointed out that while his career may have suffered he still carried on working (he's strangely still recognisable as the masked General Klytus in Flash Gordon). Also mentioned that he was a very well regarded stage actor before he moved into TV. A far more balanced appraisal of the man and his work I think.

Shocking Guardian article. Department S, Jason King & Peter Wyngarde in many many enjoyable productions will long outlive hatchet jobs like that one from Gavin Gaughan. RIP Peter Wyngarde

RIP Peter Wyngarde It's about having a little decorum and class if you ask me. Also respect and integrity. I think that's why this forum says in the good spirit guide about if you wanna just slate someone on the obituary thread, then instead of doing that just put/use the emoticon of a face with its mouth taped shut.

RIP Peter Wyngarde He obviously had a vendetta against PW and has posted on a couple of forums in a similar vein. PW’s relatives (despite claims to the contrary in the badly researched article, he did have some) are apparently considering legal action. I hope they sue the ar$e off him.

If anyone epitomised 'cult TV' then Peter Wyngarde had to be a serious contender. A compelling actor to watch - generally described as 'camp' but equally the Jason King character (and I believe Wyngarde himself) could also be assertive and handle men, most definitely in the metaphoric rather than physical sense . Whether he suffered from type-casting, or scandal, or was merely a difficult bloke to handle (I suspect a mixture of all three), his rarity on screen after 'Jason King' was a loss to TV and films. I do think he could have appeared in e.g. 'The Sweeney', esp. as one of the high-profile guest actors in seasons 1 or 2, and also 'Minder' and The Pros. By the mid 80s, film actors like Graham Stark and Lionel Jeffries appeared in Minder as eccentric characters - I am sure Peter could easily have fitted in. Subsequently, I think his sharp characteristics could have got him on TV shows like 'Have I got News For You' and the Reeves/Mortimer shows, had he wanted to do so. R.I.P. Peter Wyngarde. Where were you for the past forty-five years....? felix + fordcapri - I am also interested to find out how good the book is.

He could have appeared in Grange Hill as the Series 1 principal, Mr Starling perhaps You're not wrong there Chris - though his salary would probably have been way in excess of what the BBC would pay for a children's show.

Having recently seen him playing Jason King it was interesting to hear that distinctive voice coming out of a normal looking face in the episode of The Champions he did. It also again makes me wonder why he didn't do voice overs for commercials or narration for documentaries or even audio books. He certainly had the voice for it. Then again maybe he wasn't interested in such work.
