One of my favourite performances of his was as Ricki Tarr in the TV series 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'.
RIP Hywel.

I do hope the BBC show Malice Aforethought by way of tribute. He was brilliant in that.
RIP.

Sad news.
He was great in loads of stuff. Of course much of the coverage will mention Shelley but he starred in some cracking productions as well.. Not least of all excellent movies like Twisted Nerve, Endless Night, Loot, The Family Way etc.
I gather he had some issues boozing and could be hard work.
For me he was one of those actors that could've been a great but never quite made it. Finding certain success instead with television and the aforementioned Shelley, which he deserved, because the show's first few series are really very good, and much of that is down to Hywel's delivery and charm.
RIP Hywel.

Saddened but not surprised to hear this. Over on the 'Shelley' thread I found a link to say he was drinking himself to death. As Arch says, he made some quality films. 'Endless Night' and 'Twisted Nerve' are true class.
RIP

More very sad news, which we probably won't see a lot of coverage for, which is a shame.
As mentioned above, the guy obviously had his demons which impacted on his later career, but undoubtedly a very fine actor and always enjoyed seeing him appear in anything I was watching.
RIP

Very sad news.
I can remember watching Shelley, many years ago, haven't watched the series, for a long time, but I have got series 1-6, on DVD.
I remember Hywel's appearance in The Sweeney, Hywel, also appeared in an episode of another John Thaw, series - Redcap, which I have yet to watch.
Hywel Bennett, also appeared in three films (all mentioned above), with Hayley Mills, Endless Night, was shown on the Talking Pictures Channel, last night.
R.I.P. Hywel Bennett.

I remember Hywel's appearance in The Sweeney Sweet Smell of Succession is one of my favourite episodes. He's great in that as the fresh faced university educated gangster's son who runs rings around the grisly old school hardmen squabbling over his deceased father's criminal empire. Like flyingsquad above I also rate his appearance as Ricky Tarr in Tinker, Tailor...just the right combination of dodginess and the wounded romantic innocent.

I don't think there are many actors who could have matched him for his acted sarcasm. Shelley really was a fine piece of work.

Carmarthen boy. Shelley was Grumpy Old Men way before Grumpy Old Men. Robert Hardy's death seems to have been dominated the media a lot more this weekend.

No mention how he spent his final years. Probably best left unsaid TBH. I didn't realise he had drinking issues in the past though. According to the obit he had booked into a clinic in 1986.

He was in some interesting and notable films in the late 1960s. His television career flourished quite a bit in the 1ate 70s and into the 80s. His Guardian obituary mentions a congenital heart defect as his reason for retiring. But he was a good actor in a lot of things.

One of my favourite actors of all time. Only a few weeks ago, I watched him give a brilliant performance in 'Frankie and Johnny'
And, maybe one day; I *will* get to see 'The Consultant' again.
RIP. 73 is way too soon for anyone.

Sorry to hear this. I didn't know until I saw this thread.
An actor who appeared in 'controversial' productions, certainly at their particular time. Though they haven't always aged well.
Hywel himself was a fine actor, as exemplified in his Sweeney episode 'Sweet Smell Of Succession'.
R.I.P. Hywel Bennett.
