Always a reassuring presence on Film (insert year) on BBC1. Jonathan Ross ruined Barry's legacy, and Winkleman is dire. Just wish Barry hadn't blotted his copy book and jumped to SKY "for the money" RIP Barry.

I loved Barry Norman in the 80s- never bothered with film review after he left- great talker with subtle deadpan humour

He was okay. I actually didn't mind Barry. For his BBC program that is, I never read his Daily Mail stuff. I don't normally like critics much. Unless they sing my tune or I see them as particularly knowledgeable expert in their field; and a lot of the time they aren't. That's why Claudia is so poor on the show, she knows jack about film and shouldn't have been given the job.
For a mainstream critic he was okay. I don't believe he used his critical voice against the censorship of the visual arts enough over the years though. Which is pretty poor.
RIP Barry.

I really liked Barry Norman's presenting style. He certainly knew a lot about film. His father Leslie was a well respected Film and TV director.
A sad loss.
RIP Barry.

As a young viewer back in his late eighties heyday I respected him for his wit and knowledge but thought that he got increasingly reactionary as he got older. That said, I don't think his show was treated particularly well by the BBC in its latter years and that might have had something to do with his sometimes curmudgeonly demeanour, and final flit to SKY. Even his final days at the helm were immeasurably superior to Ross who seemed content to recycle studio publicity hype in between fawning interviews of "the stars". You might disagree with Barry Norman but at least he told you what he genuinely thought, and why.
I also enjoyed a couple of his novels which had more than a touch of Raymond Chandler about them.

Saw him interviewing Sir Rog at The Persuaders! event a few years ago in that relaxed, easy going style of his. A very good interviewer. Also used to pass his house in Datchworth near Stevenage on a regular basis.
RIP.

I can remember watching some of the FIlm reviews back in the 80s, usually after Miami Vice I think, but not being a big fan of films it was not something I would go out of my way to watch, but he always came across as pleasant enough. I never knew he went to Sky and also had a range of Pickled onions at one point.
RIP

His avuncular style suited film reviews. Like Michael Parkinson, he did his job without seeking to be a celebrity in himself.
R.I.P. Barry Norman.

I thought he was a very informative and insightful critic of cinema, the best on TV. I think the reason he stopped doing the Film programme for BBC1 was because he was getting fed up of Hollywood becoming more and more commercial, i.e. selling to the masses with its special FX, romcoms, average scripts, lack of actual quality, etc. He must have missed the '70s and '80s really badly.
I can remember him saying on TV-AM that Ben Johnson should be banned from sports for life as a result of his drugs scandal at the Seoul '88 Olympics.

I remember one year he was hosting some chit chat either during or about the Oscars and guests from the surrounding crowd were sitting down and talking to him for a bit and moving on. In one segment Madonna sat down in his little circle but Barry continued his conversation with whoever was already there, not as big as star as Madonna for sure, but Barry was having an interesting normal conversation with them. Madonna was not pleased not to become the centre of attention and I think they cut to a clip from a film and when they came back Madonna was gone. Barry made some quip about her and carried on. I admired him for not fawning over someone who obviously thought everything should stop for them.

I read one of his favourite actors was Clint Eastwood. Limited as a thespian, but a genuinely nice person with no ego. That struck Barry a lot. Ties in with the Madonna drama queen story.

He welcomed her as she sat down but carried on with what he was doing. Anyone with a less inflated opinion of themselves would have waited patiently to be included but Madonna wasn't like that!
