Very sad, a one off. Glad he passed on as Alzheimer's is horrid. No way to live. No doubt Shep is bouncing up and down with his master and him reunited. RIP John.

I hereby start a campaign to repeat the entire 'Go With Noakes' from the start. BBC, I hope you are listening - in these times you need to start getting with the plan.

Legend sums up John. Great TV presenter and he was brilliant on 'Blue Peter'. Very sad news.
RIP John.

The first people I remember presenting BP were Valerie Singleton, Peter Purves and John. John finished on the show in 1978 when I was 16.

That footage of him climbing up Nelson's Column with no safety harness and wearing a pair of flares still makes my toes curl. Can you imagine a children's TV presenter dong that today? I'm not sure if he was incredibly brave or incredibly stupid but fair play to him for doing it.

It was revealed later that the BBC didn't pay insurance on Noakes with his exploits. Here's one of his finest moments that never fails to amuse me. Kudos to Lulu as well. If you scroll down the comments, I left one several months ago as SuperAce5150

I'm sure he held the highest skydive for a civilian for many years as well. He had no fear at all.

Very sad news indeed.
John Noakes, was one of the legendary Blue Peter presenters, like Zimbo, I am also too young to have watched John Noakes presenting Blue Peter at the time, but have enjoyed watching episodes (featuring John Noakes), on DVD-R Discs.
I can remember seeing repeats of Go with Noakes, I can also remember seeing John Noakes, on a BBC programme (called Fax!), in January 1987, and he revealed (on the programme) that Shep, had died a few days before, I hope John and Shep, are now reunited.
R.I.P. John Noakes.

Very sad news. Don't remember him on Blue Peter, as just a little before my time, but watched the other shows back in the day when kids TV amount to around two hours in the afternoon. He was as mad a a box of frogs, (meant in a nice way) and had little fear of anything and wouldn't get to do half the things he did nowadays due to health and safety laws.
I would imagine there will be a tribute to him on Blue Peter, but a real shame kids today don't have guys like him around to entertain them, it would be good to see the reaction to one of his programmes played on CBBC as a tribute, I am sure kids would love it.
RIP

I remember being fascinated by his daredevil antics in the 1970s: Parachuting at five miles altitude with the Red Devils, Nelson's Column and of course the ill fated bob-sleigh run. Peter Purves on the news tonight said the Noakes TV personna wasn't necessarily the real man, but regardless he must have had nerves of steel to do those stunts.

According to Wikipedia, he was born John Bottomley. I didn't know that. Strange that John was never given an MBE for services to broadcasting. He certainly deserved one for all the daredevil acts on BP!

I remember him well on 'Blue Peter' - I started watching during the era of Noakes, Purvis, Singleton & Judd. It was indeed the definitive presenter line-up.
I also remember 'Go With Noakes', which started when John was still on BP but continued for a while after. And I remember the sad day when he appeared on TV in the late 80s (after some years of absence). IIRC it was some kind of "where are they now" feature, in which viewers had asked about John Noakes. He appeared, but by coincidence Shep had just died, and John became tearful.
Good to hear Peter Purves being very positive about John. It seems that the BP team at that time got along well?
The Nelson's Column climb fascinates me. Did they climb up the whole column, or were they airlifted to a point near the top, from where they had to climb to the pinnacle?
Also must be remembered that a cameraman got up there as well (with heavy equipment).
R.I.P. John Noakes.

No, a straight climb, no harness, no non-slip boots, no gloves, just grit. That's how it used to be. There's an equally scarier clip on HMS Ganges where he climbs masts in gusts of heavy wind.
Wouldn't see Ant or Dec doing this!

Kids TV was better back then, proper role models like Gripper Stebson and Zammo Maguire too.
