First of all can I just say I am new to this site and its great - can't believe I didn't find it sooner!
Now, can any one remember a film staring Gary Webster. I can't remember the name but his character was called Jimmy and he lived in a tower block on a rough estate, drove an old ford cortina but saved all his money to go and play a board game called pits and palaces for hard cash. Thanks and hope someone can help.
Since this was originally posted I have acquired the DVD this and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend everyone here watches it - it is an intriguing story of an underground board game syndicate where Gary's character is the star of the show.
I must say though, when I watched it I can help but think of him as Ray Daley, despite him obviously being a different character. It also made me wonder if Gary could have done a series of Minder (or a possible spin off as Ray Daley on his own).
Definitely worth a watch and the DVD is worth acquiring if the price is right I would say.

Daley & McCann are, as good as, holding hands, on the exercise yard, in the scrubs.
I remember seeing this film on Sky in my student days, not long after it first came out. I really enjoyed it too and thought Gary came across really well, admittedly his character seemed quite similar to Ray in many ways. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, I still remember a couple of lines from it. It does seem such a shame that Gary didn't get more roles after Minder as he was great in a 90s Jack the Lad type of role......if there was such a thing as a Jack the Lad as late as the 90s!
A couple of years ago, it was showing on a free to air movie channel, something like MOVIES FOR MEN or MOVIES 24. I did not watch it, as it had already started, but I saw it in the EPG one Sunday morning. It said something like "MINDER STAR GARY WEBSTER stars....."
I went to see it. I bought it on DVD and watched it last night. I'm surprised no one actually talking about what's being bought in that movie considering it was filmed directly after the last ever episode of Minder.
The Big Game stars Gary Webster as Jimmy, a 32 year old who just came out of prison and works in a factory packing frozen chicken but bored yet wanting more with his life, he has set out to play a monopoly like game called 'Pits and Palaces' (maybe to not get a lawsuit from Hasbro, creator of monopoly) but using real money with Jimmy idea of getting the money to begin with.
So his new gambler friends push him to form a syndicate and offer the monopoly style board game to anyone else who wants to play. He evenfully mets someone and things doesn't go so well. His new gambler friends, one of which a Newcastle United football player don't know he's a factory worker as Jimmy protrays himself as a stock broker to try to convince the other gamblers that he's loaded with money.
The Big Game is a big deal because as the last episode of Minder, it makes fans of Gary Webster wonder where he'll end up. I have to admit. it's rather scary seeing him in Minder aged in his 30 going to prison and I wonder where he'll end up and how he ever gets out of prison and I did rush to see the last few minutes of the last minder episode. Does did alot to watch me see this. It's a must watch if you really care about what happens to Gary Webster after Minder and how he comes out after prison if anyone like looking into that continuity between movies of characters in the movie industry! The Big Game sums it up and explains quickly.
The other characters made sense also. It took me a while but it did make me think to why they got together and gamble in the first place and how the villainous character went after Jimmy in the first place to try to take the silly game away from him leaving him with no money and the ending. It movie feels a bit unreal but I'm beginning to wonder it's really had that kind of culture in places like Essex or Norfolk from some silly idea like making real money from a child boardgame like 'Pits and Palaces'.
Jimmy has a girlfriend also. A black haired lady with short hair, that Jimmy breaks the news about how the money gets handled, whenever he loses money (not the kind of news you'll break to a lady someone is dating) but she looks like she deserved to get the news broken to her during the course of the money.
An interesting character is Julie, Jimmy's girlfriend who is played by Emma Wary, I've taken the screen of them together from the movie:
Considering the papers were talking about Minder and Ray's girlfriend at the time, make anyone wonder how Ray's alter-ego moved on, so he has a girlfriend in The Big Game named Julie. It's also worth noting that Emma Wray later went to star in a series named My Wonderful Life where she plays Donna. Gary Webster is also have been said to make an appearance in the show in the late 90s, I managed to find (and pinch) a scan of the news someone has kept, to show how the Gary Webster has moved on before meeting his wife and getting married in 1999:
I think it's safe to say that Ray in Minder was meant to reflect how open the youth culture was during the 90s. Dennis Waterman's character wasn't like that as I would remember. I've noticed the caption also on the newspaper print: "Emma Wray from Watching teams up with Gary Webster from Minder in the latest comedy offering from the creator of Men Behaving Badly, Simon Nye"
"Gary, who go his first big acting break on Artur Daley's nephew Ray swaps his suits for a paramedic's uniform to play her world-be boyfriend"
I've scanned in the DVD cover for the UK version. I mean showing off the back end of the cover.
The whole "The game is cover until the rich man says it is" is actually a quote from the bad guy in the film, not Gary Websters character. I know, it looks like Webster is saying that from the cover. Another one of those ways to grab and catch anyone who hasn't watched the movie.
I like this place featured in the film. Hoping that I'll find and see it one day. Were the family and Webster's character lives. Would be great it anyone tells me so I can see the site one day or I'll let people know where, once I find it.
