Sad news that 'Manuel' has left us at the age of 86.
Brilliant in that role in Fawlty Towers.
RIP.

Very sad news ... pretty sure everyone loved Manuel and he was in a few of our favourite shows here on the forum too - Strangers, Callan and The Saint. Let's not forget Sidney too - he was in Minder, heading orf to Brighton with Arthur & Ray, trapped in a caravan. Great stuff. I loved Manuel though - at the time I first watched Fawlty, he did a forgotten about Spanish learning show around Spain, consulting Manuel when he got into trouble. It was called 'When in Spain" - the likelihood of this ever resurfacing now is zero. There is mention of it here going out in 1987: www.tossacostabrava.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=206Very sad news this - yes he's primarily remembered as Manuel, but what an impact the character had. RIP ... que?

Immensely sad.
Although rightly known for his role in Fawlty Towers, he was known for the Whitehall Comedy plays - that's where Cleese first saw him. The dynamics between each of the main characters was unique. Etched in all our minds, and only 12 episodes made.
RIP Andreas Siegfried Sachs. Genius characterisation.

Has a very varied legacy of work behind him, but it will always be Manuel he is remembered for and I am sure it won't have bothered him as most actors would give their right arm for such an inconic role.
I didn't realise he was 86, I though he was in his 70s, but a decent innings. Sad news indeed.
RIP

He was a very talented gentleman. Interesting background too. Jewish German who's family fled to England in 1938 and we're very glad they did.
RIP Andrew.

Very sad, by all accounts a gentleman. I think the events with his grand daughter and those two oiks on all the front pages aged him over night. He was devastated and rightfully so. Rest Andrew, and thanks for the laughs.

Rest Andrew, and thanks for the laughs. What I think of them is unprintable and wouldn't be right in an obituary thread. I will just say Andrew Sachs had more talent in his little finger than those two have combined. RIP Andrew

I'll never understand why they did that, but surprisingly enough and by his own admission, it got him back on TV and back into the spotlight.
The strange times we live in.

One newspaper said that Andrew turned down the chance of Victor Meldrew in One Foot In The Grave because he didn't like the scripts. I know Richard Wilson was the first choice. He initially wasn't keen because he was a few years away from 60 and while I think Wilson was the best choice, I think Sachs would have done a good job in the role. Other choices for Meldrew were Les Dawson (great comedian but don't think he would have been right) and one of my favourites, Timothy West, who I think would have been great, like he was in Brass.

I think Sachs would have been to warm a person to play Meldrew. As much as I don't like Richard Wilson as a person, (a long story) he nailed the charachter of Meldrew and him his own.

I initially thought that but after seeing all the tributes to him, I think he was a good enough actor to play someone so different to himself

In childhood, I gained the impression that Manuel was the star of 'Fawlty Towers', rather than Cleese.
RIP Andrew Sachs.

I remember him being on Saturday morning kids' TV and explaining how he got burnt for real when doing the kitchen fire scene in Fawlty Towers. That's suffering for your art.
Deservedly, and I think affectionately, remembered as Manuel but good in such a lot of other things too, as has been said.

I just watched a episode of Randall and Hopkirk Deceased and he appears as a Football commentator. I didn't realize it was him until I saw his name in the credits. I went back and watched the scene again.

Yes pr1, I think I remember that and I did the same - went back through the episode to check out his appearance.
Something I sometimes did when reading the credits on old TV shows.
