Did anyone watch 'Get Back' a sitcom with Ray Winstone playing the main character. It was created by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (they made it between 'Birds Of A Feather' and 'Goodnight Sweetheart') and ran for 2 series in 1992 and 1993.
It fitted the early 90s perfect as Ray played Martin Sweet a rough cockney who lost his dress shop business in the recession and found himself having to rent his fathers flat.
Most of the main actors featured in various Minder episodes, John Bardon (Poetic Justice Init), Carol Harrison (A Well Fashioned Fitup), Larry Lamb (If Money Be The Food Of Love Play On). Also the show featured Kate Winslet (before anyone had heard of her) as his daughter and Zoot Money appeared throughout both series as well.
The strange twist with this program is the connection with Beatles songs. Get Back being one and in that song it mentions sweet Loretta Martin, the 2 main Characters were Martin and Loretta Sweet with daughters Jo Jo and Eleanor.
It's worth a watch if you can get a copy and a million times better than Birds Of A Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart.
I have most on VHS recorded off the TV but not great quality so I'm well pleased and suprised to see that both series are available.
They were shown on the BBC in 1992 and 1993 and Ray Winstone played the main character they were created by Maurice Gran/ Laurence Marks (Alomo Productions) their next series after Birds Of A Feather and before Goodnight Sweetheart.
Most of the adult main characters had appeared in Minder, Larry Lamb, John Bardon and Carol Harrison. It also starred Kate Winslett as his daughter before anyone had heard of her.
It was set at the present time (1992) about the recession Ray Winstone and Carol Harrison played Martin & Loretta Sweet who lost their business in Hertfordshire and were forced to move with their 2 teenage daughters back to Finsbury Park and lived in Martins Dads (John Bardon) council flat that he sub let to them. Martins brother Albert (Larry Lamb) hadn't been affected by the recession.
John Bardons character is great he's a real skin flint installing a pay phone in the flat (charged at his set rate) and watching for when the boys come into the social club so he can time the ending of his pint to their arrival (so they get one in for him) and once said he popped into the old folks home for lunch "they never notice a new face" and when invited into Alberts posh house demanded to know where the Horse brasses him and his mother had bought for him were. He also had a new girlfriend and often spoke about their sex life and his uncontrolable sex drive.
The series also starred Zoot Money as Bungalow Bill a friend of the family.
There was also a Beatles connection the title being a Beatles song which featurd a line "sweet Loretta Martin" the daughters were JoJo (also from Get Back song and Eleanor (as in Rigby) and each episode was a Beatles song (however there was no real reference to the Beatles in the show)
I was 14 in 1992 and enjoyed watching it and watching it now it seems even better than the reality junk on TV in 2007. I think it's much better than Birds Of Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart which really wasn't that good I thought.
Does anyone else recall watching it on TV in 1992/1993?
I watched Get Back when it was on originally, and it reminded me that Ray Winstone and Larry Lamb also played brothers in another excellent Euston Films production, Fox. I liked Ray in Vincent as well - he's one of the very few 'ordinary guys' you see on TV nowadays - although if I was being honest, I also watched Vincent as Suranne Jones was in it...
